Gregg Henson: QB Josh Rosen, Rivals #1 Overall, to M?

Submitted by Communist Football on

In his latest post, Henson says that QB Josh Rosen, Rivals' #1 overall recruit for 2015, will decommit from UCLA and join Michigan if Harbaugh is hired:

I got another interesting text from a good source that Josh Rosen “is in” if Jim is indeed named the next Head Coach at Michigan.  Rosen is a California kid who is committed to UCLA, but sources say he will more than likely be a Wolverine once the search is resolved next week.  That is a bit of a surprise to me as Michigan already has a nice prospect in the class, Alex Malzone from Birmingham Brother Rice.  I’ll admit, I know next to nothing about recruits, I’m just passing it along from a solid source.
Here's Rosen's Rivals profile:

Rosen has a very interesting background. His dad went to Penn, his mother to Princeton, and he is descended from the founder of the Wharton business school and also from the former CEO of publishing house J.B. Lippincott:

B/R: Which NFL QB do you try to watch the most on a weekly basis?
JR: Year in, year out, Peyton Manning above all else, but I'm a huge Andrew Luck fan as of recently. I love what he did at Stanford, and I think he should get much more recognition than he already does for flipping a team that lost many of their best Pro Bowl  players. He flipped a team from a 2-14 record to a wining playoff team and actually won a playoff game. But year in, year out, probably Manning because he's the best at what he does. Technique, his mind, feet, everything—hands-down he's the best.

UPDATE: Comrade Dubs, in the comments, notes the following tweet indicating that Rosen is denying any interest in decommitting from UCLA:

After talking directly to Josh Rosen yesterday he said the death penalty at UCLA might make him rethink his commitment, that's it.

Was commited to LSU until the 17th of JANUARY, decommited and enrolled at ND on the same day.

"Kiel was packing for LSU this weekend when it hit him how far Baton Rouge was in comparison to South Bend, a three-hour drive, the source told Schad."

He is already has had a campus visit. Idolizes Luck.

All Jim can do is give him a phone call unfortunately, as it is a dead period. I mean I would say it extremely unlikely, but hey there is a shot.

but I have a feeling the #1 RB recruit will be very interested in UM after the JH announcement.

Just a hunch, though.

1) I didn't / maybe don't think this will happen. Rosen is supposed to be enrolling early (Jan 6), and the dead period goes through Jan 15. So, if this were to happen, he would have to back out of his committ to UCLA, not enroll early. What would be do till fall?

2) It would be a downer for Malzone. I haven't seen him play, but appreciate he stuck with us, when so many of this class went elsewhere. Even if Rosen does come, I hope Malzone sticks it out. You never know how things will work out.

I'm sorry to be doing this and trying to do this as tactfully as possible. Mods, please enlighten me if there's a protocol for this that I'm unaware of.

So. The no politics rule.

OP, thanks for the info, but your avatar is the symbol of a regime that committed the Holodomor and, beyond that, intentionally starved millions of its own citizens to death. It's every bit as bad as - the numbers are larger than - the Holocaust.

Are we really ok with allowing the hammer and sickle symbol here? We wouldn't allow the swastika, I am sure.

Sorry to be a downer on this day, but (obviously) I find that symbol repugnant.

I'm pretty sure he's not making a political statement.

Back in the Carr era, one of our assistants (I want to say Steve Szabo) called spread offenses "Communist football."  The OP favors such a style of football, and so...

I do want to add, BTW, that I have relatives who lived under a Communist regime, so I do understand where you're coming from.  In fact, I got into a few arguments when I was at U-M with other students who thought life on the other side of the iron curtain was just swell.

That said, I'm 99% sure the OP making a joking reference to the old quote.

I oppose the economic & political form of communism. Many of my posts make ironic references to Lenin, Mao, etc. for this reason. It's of course important to engage in serious critiques of political communism. But as every good communist knows, mockery is the most dangerous form of political critique.

Not to mention, communist football is the fullest realization of the Hegelian dialectic.

Because Malzone may be committed to Michigan but Harbaugh is not committed to Malzone, so to speak. He's never met the kid... Not to sound cold-hearted but Malzone, although a good prospect, wasn't even our first, second, or third choice at QB, and Rosen is the #1 prospect in the country at the position - With Harbaugh now in the fold this is war. And I want the best recruits, period.

I like Malzone and can certainly respect the fact that he stuck it out with us, but if Rosen wants to come here, I'd hope Harbaugh makes a spot open for him, as long as he honors Malzone's scholarship. Let the two of them compete. It's not like either of them would necessarily have the upper hand next year with Morris and Speight ahead of them.

You don't just turn down the top QB prospect in the country. Play to win.

Another possibility to look at is, if Rosen decides to come to UM and is as good as advertised, there is the possibility (especially if he is able to enroll early) that he could be starting, given that Morris has struggled so far, and Speight is unproven, and therefore unknown. If he at least plays next year, then his redshirt would be burned, Malzone would likely be redshirted, effectively putting them in different classes/eligibility levels.

Another QB I would watch though is 2016 4/5* KJ Costello, he seemed highly interested in UM earlier, in fact if i remember correctly, there was a rumor he was thinking about commiting but then DeWeaver went along and committed. With Costello being from CA I'd guess he understands how fantastic Harbaugh has been at previous coaching stops and may be re-interested in playing for the Wolverines. Definitely would love to see him in the fold.

if we actually get a White quarterback. It would be a dream come true. Sort of. Mostly the fact that he's the #1 QB in the nation, but being White makes me even happier.

Gregg Henson doesn't know shit and him pulling Harbaugh to UM out of his ass before anyone who was actually plugged in was confident enough to call it doesn't change that.
