Grad Transfer QB Options
So, what with with having a 99% shot at bringing Mr. Harbaugh to Michigan, let's shift our attention to next season. Quarterback play is always vital and for the first time in a few years we don't already know who our starter will be at this stage. If Morris isn't deemed the answer, how would we feel about taking a stab at a graduate transfer? Who are some potential options?
December 27th, 2014 at 4:25 PM ^
We have Speight and Morris...I have not given up on them, and honestly only want to see a guy who committed to Michigan take over. Morris will get better coaching whether it's Harbaugh or not I guarantee that.

I want a good quarterback to take over. I don't care if he committed to Michigan initially or not.
Michigan should have taken a QB in 2012. Then we would have more options.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:44 PM ^
guy. Hoke was committed to Michigan and was a great guy. I want a winning QB and a winning Coach. There is (hopefully) a new sheriff in town. I could care less who is committed, on the team or wants to jump on the Harbaugh bandwagon. I trust that Harbaugh will find us the QB we have been waiting to take Michigan back to glory (or at least 9/10 win seasons).
December 27th, 2014 at 5:26 PM ^
It has nothing to do with who they are. I guess I just want to give them the benefit of the doubt that they had bad coaching. Plus, Speight hasn't even been given a chance yet. The way Drake Johnson stepped up after about 3 injuries , who knows what they can do.

player.
December 27th, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
But wtf are you basing that on???? If he was any good this year, he would have beat out Morris. Redshirt be damned.
Competition is good. Bring in a grad transfer and may the best man win.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:28 PM ^
I don't think we're in a bad situation at QB with Harbaugh as a QB guru. I just watched Malzone destroy it for Brother Rice in the state championship game. We also have Wilton Speight. If we can get a grauate transfer then it's better than not getting one but I don't know who's out there currently. I don't see any Russell Wilsons out there currently.
December 27th, 2014 at 5:20 PM ^
Brother Rice didn't make the D2 title game this season. They lost to eventual champion Warren De La Salle in their regional final.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:27 PM ^
Speight will win the job. We don't need Braxton miller or any other grad transfer QB. Is this thread a joke?
December 27th, 2014 at 4:30 PM ^
The thing that's a joke is that people dismiss the idea entirely after the QB play over the past couple years. Michigan's non-Gardner quarterbacks have 0 touchdowns and 9 interceptions over their careers.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:38 PM ^
That was the old staff , reinforcements are coming in.

Heard the same thing when Nuss was coming in...
December 27th, 2014 at 5:52 PM ^
I think it is hard to judge Nuss on one season at Michigan. It was basically like brining a good trauma surgeon after the patient had already been coding for half an hour. I doubt anyone would have succeeded in that situation.
December 27th, 2014 at 6:56 PM ^
And is why Hoke was fired and Nussmeier has moved on. I guarantee you won't be seeing the same type of pussy excuse from the incoming Head Coach.
December 27th, 2014 at 7:39 PM ^
I can agree that one year is too short to judge someone. But when the players under your direct tutelage are getting worse, why give him the benefit of the doubt and make excuses for him?
He gave Gardner more responsibility for reading the defense pre-snap. In retrospect, that looks like a disastrous decsision. Morris regressed and was completely mishandled. Nuss wasn't helpless. He didn't know our personnel coming in and didn't figure out how to help them. As much as Borges got blamed for not adjusting to our QBs' strengths, it seems that Nuss was no better in that regard.
December 27th, 2014 at 10:06 PM ^
The thing is, Borges has a horrifically bad record with recruiting QBs and identifying talent. I'm not going to find the link, sorry, but Brian mentioned this in a column (probably UV) this year. Brian even tweeted about Borges's record after Brian noticed it; Brian was shocked at how bad it was.
So yeah, Nuss didn't get them to do any better by coaching to their strengths - but maybe they don't have strengths to begin with. Borges takes more of the blame here, I think.
That said, I stil think that Morris has a shot. And Malzone... maybe it's a good thing that Michigan took so long to pull the trigger on him.
Finally, I just can't help but mention that Borges was the guy who thought Russ Bellomy was ready to take over for Denard in 2012. I mean, _that_ is the type of QB talent identification we're talking about when we talk about Borges.
So... yeah. I'm hoping for a grad transfer, although I do have small hope for Morris to be good next year and significant hope for Malzone to be good eventually.
December 27th, 2014 at 5:57 PM ^
Do you really think Jim Harbuagh can't get better results than Nuss did this year? Really?
December 27th, 2014 at 4:57 PM ^
Jesus, Harbaugh doesn't have some special drug that turns QBs into Andrew Luck.
December 27th, 2014 at 5:31 PM ^
Calm your tits. He's going to get QB coaching unlike what he got the past few years. So you guys must not be excited for Harbaugh if you don't think he can make our QB's better?

weak.
December 27th, 2014 at 6:06 PM ^
qb coaching takes time. stop acting like these qb's are going to make some giant leap in 6 months. the qb position is a mess right now and it won't be fixed come august.
December 27th, 2014 at 7:43 PM ^
was able to coach Morris, Speight or Malzone into something serviceable in the next 6 months, I've yet to see anything from the group of WRs that gives me any comfort they can consistently help out any QB.
December 27th, 2014 at 6:58 PM ^
It's called a demand for the highest level of excellence. An attitude that has been dramatically absent in Ann Arbor for well over a decade.
December 27th, 2014 at 5:37 PM ^
How many of those were speight involved in? I'll wait...
Also, as an offensive coordinator (3 years HS, 2 years semi pro) I can say with confidence that Wilton is the real deal.
December 27th, 2014 at 7:10 PM ^
THis is bar none, our most important need. Morris is not it. Period. Maybe on Speight but Borges did not have good track record.
Wake up. We all appreciate the fact Speight and Morris committed to M. But with Harbaugh and our home schedule if we get a REAL QB M can be good RIGHT AWAY.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:28 PM ^
Hmm. Braxton Miller is eligble for a grad transfer. Does anyone forsee any problem with him coming here?
December 27th, 2014 at 4:38 PM ^
He has two shoulders if I'm not mistaken.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:44 PM ^
At this point it sounds like he may actually Only have one.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:45 PM ^
Correct. And right now neither one of them are capable of throwing a football accurately without fear of internal combustion.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
No easy info to be found on grad transfers. You have to look at the 5tth year senior types who were beat out last year OR are at a bad football school who would like a year with Harbaugh.
And no it is not going to be Braxton Miller before someone suggests it.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:31 PM ^
too late
December 27th, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
Florida QB Jeff Driskel is looking around. Not endorsing him necessarily, just a name I've seen.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:36 PM ^
How about Braxton Miller? I have to say I'm on cloud nine today over the news about Harbaugh coming home. WE FINALLY HAVE A COACH!!! I know it's not official yet but from what I'm hearing it might as well be. Edit: not after I saw that tattoo. Lol!
December 27th, 2014 at 4:34 PM ^
How good is Driskel?
December 27th, 2014 at 4:37 PM ^
Florida fans don't think he's good.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:38 PM ^
He's horrible.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
Former 5-star recuit, 11 win season in 2012, struggled mightily last 2 seasons and has been benched. Doesn't look impressive at all, but had potential to be good. He looks like he'll transfer to Duke after this season.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:49 PM ^
Yeah Driskel was the most obvious candidate to me.
He has 2 minor problems
- He sucks to the point UF abandoned the pass game and went with a true FR QB to close out the year and ran like 90% of the time
- He sucks so bad he destroyed Muschamp
But yeah other than that... fine candidate. ;)
December 27th, 2014 at 6:31 PM ^
Bad QB is HC career killer
December 27th, 2014 at 4:35 PM ^
People here telling me they wouldn't take Braxton Miller over Speight/Morris?
Hypothetically, of course.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:40 PM ^
How do fifth-year transfers even work? Can he transfer in-conference and still get a scholarship? He couldn't if he was transferring as an undergrad.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
I THINK he has to be looking for a major that his current school doesn't offer in grad school. I could totally wrong though .
December 27th, 2014 at 5:17 PM ^
So he'll have to come play school.
It's all moot anyway. Braxton is not leaving OSU.
December 27th, 2014 at 5:38 PM ^
OSU is not ranked in the top 20
December 27th, 2014 at 7:50 PM ^
was changed not long ago. He could get a scholarship, but I'm not sure if Ohio State could block him from transferring to certain schools.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
Yes, let's take the guy that has a block O on his arm and assume that he wants to lead Michigan to a B1G title.
Sometimes you should take the heart of a QB over the arm of one.

I'd take Braxton Miller but I just don't think he's going to transfer to his hated rival to play in a pro style when he can play at Oregon. I don't think there are any good grad transfers at QB this year that are any better than what we have.
December 27th, 2014 at 4:47 PM ^
#1 OSU is not releasing Braxton Miller to go to their most hated rival
#2 If Braxton is leaving he has a very obvious landing spot in Oregon where they have a NC level team which will need a QB next year.
No one is saying they wouldnt take Braxton. The scenario for it happening would be ludicrous. It would be like Devin Gardner going to OSU 12 months ago to finish out his career.
December 27th, 2014 at 5:01 PM ^
if Braxton Miller qualifies as a graduate transfer. All he would have to do is pick a school that has a graduate program his current school doesnt have.
December 27th, 2014 at 5:10 PM ^
Both Miller and Barrett are coming off of serious injuries, and there is no guarantee they will be the same players they were before they were hurt.
If Miller went some where in the B1G, Wisconsin might be a good fit as their QB play was inept last year.
