Getting ahead of ourselves: tie breakers, playoff sceanios, and rooting interests

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

I know this thread will be hated by a large segment of the board, but here goes:

Does anyone know the tiebreaker in the event of a three way tie for the championship game? I seem to recall way back when these things were relevent to Michigan (pre championship game), that the big ten title and trip to rosebowl went to the team most removed from going. Does this still hold true? If so, thank you Hoke and Rodriguez for the sucking, I guess.

A weird situation related to the above would be Michigan, MSU, and OSU win out except: UM beats MSU, MSU beats OSU, and OSU beats UM. Fairly possible, right? If so, 2 loss UM goes to the B1G championship game and defending national champion and Michigan defeater OSU does not. Even if we win the B1G title game, I think OSU could have a more compelling case for a playoff spot.

As such, I think its in our best interest to addopt Mr Rudock's former team as our B1G west rooting interest. They don't play the big 3 from the B1G east, they're undefeated, and we may need a big fat highly ranked paper tiger to seal the deal at the end of the year.

if the scenario that you described happens, I dont think Michigan plays in the championship game because all three teams would be 7-1 in conference and it would come down to the CFP Rankings which would probably have either OSU or MSU above UM in that case.

In your scenario MSU would go to the championship.

We lose a 3 way tie automatically because we have a non-conference loss while they both were undefeated (overall record is the first tie-breaker). Then, once we were out, MSU would have head to head over OSU

Here's the rule that applies.

5.    The highest ranked team in the first College Football Playoff poll following the completion of Big Ten regular season conference play shall be the representative in the Big Ten Championship Game, unless the two highest ranked tied teams are ranked within one spot of each other in the College Football Playoff poll.  In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the Big Ten Championship Game.

We're likely to be 3rd if it's a three-way tie although it's not automatic. Unlikely that OSU and MSU are next to each other in the poll.

The wording isn't great, but it's clear that the first tiebreak is the record of their games against each other. In this case it would be 1-1 If it's not the first tiebreak, it's not in there at all.

1.    The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other.
2.    The records of the three tied teams will be compared within their division.
3.    The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5, and 6).
4.    The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents.

If we win out we will be in the playoffs because we are Michigan and because Harbaugh. It's kind of cliche/meme-ish at this point but it's the truth. The committee would not keep out 12-1 B1G champion Michigan coached by Jim Harbaugh.

But if you need a rooting interest it's everyone on our schedule when they are not playing us. Utah is your second favorite team.

The OP is getting way too complicated.

It is simple - beat MSU, beat OSU, and beat everyone else, we'll be in the BigTen championship game - doesn't matter who we play and frankly not worried about that.

Focus on next week MSU.

That is why they play the games.

Beat State, Minny, Rutgers, Penn State, Indiana and maybe Ohio State.......and then win in Indy, and then......

The team is playing really well this year but every game will present for them a different challenge.  We will get scored on at some point and maybe big.  Our offense is still evolving and a work in progress.

One game at a time

The great thing about being a fan and not a player or coach is that we have the luxury of focusing on anything we want. While I'm far more concerned about next saturday than anything else, I'm absolutely estatic we can talk about B1G championship scenarios and not look delusional while doing it.

The tiebreaker is much more likely to happen in the B1G West than the East. Iowa beat Wisconsin, but plays at Northwestern this week, NW could win, but then they play at Wisconsin late in the season. The West is wide open. We could even have a Michigan NW rematch.

bowl this year, even if we lose to both MSU and OSU (not that any of us want to believe that will happen). And then of course take care of business in all our other games.

Ole Miss went to the Peach Bowl with three middling losses (LSU, Auburn, Arkansas), but they had "good" wins over Alabama and Mississippi State in their final game.

If teams keep beating up on each other in the Pac 12 and SEC the NY6 selection may need to look at at least one 3-loss team, and which team would be more attractive than Harbaugh's Wolverines with losses only to Utah, MSU and OSU?

I could see the Rose Bowl selecting them over whoever loses the MSU-OSU game. Or if not, I could envision an intersting UM-ND matchup in the Peach Bowl.

But we are not losing next week, so all of this is moot. This is gonna be fun to watch play out.

We do however need to root for someone to beat Iowa. Having their only loss be in the B10CG would probably seal a spot in the Rose Bowl, which we probably would like to avoid happen as we might otherwise like to be that selection if we end up on the outside of the CoFoPlayo.

i don't really care anyway, since the playoff is all that matters now. Bowls have long been glorified exhibitions, and even the rose bowl will become insignificant, when it's not hosting the playoff
