Gentry wearing #81

Submitted by Qmatic on
Per Jay Harbaugh's instagram, Gentry posing with the other tight ends sporting a #81 jersey. Perhaps this could truly be is home next season. Either way, I'm excited to see him on the field in some capacity next season. Kid has a lot of potential. Jay Harbaugh's post: https://www.instagram.com/p/_7Vm7nqs2V/

He's a true freshman...how the hell do you know where he's going to finish his career or make the biggest impact?

Plenty of QBs have played other positions to get on the field, learn the speed of the game, learn the nuances of playing college football, etc. and then finished their career at QB.

Michigan's had one recently.

Ryan Tannehill played WR, Baylor moved their current QB to WR because he was 3rd string and they wanted him on the field...he's moving back to QB next year.

Boykin at TCU? He was a WR. Nick Marshall was playing DB. The list goes on and on....

If you have a young player who's talented enough to see the field at another position early in his career...you try him out. It doesn't mean his other position is finished forever. It could, no question. He may never take a snap at QB at Michigan. But how do we know this after ONE semester of football?

I hope he does flip back to QB for spring game and next season.  I like his potential and he could be the difference between a win or loss if he does play the backup role next year (barring he doesn't win the job outright)

Michael Jocz, (in the middle at the back of the group), is already #81 and a TE. Quite possible that Gentry is wearing #81 for the scout team representing Antonio Callaway.

He looks like he's dwarfing both Butt and Bunting. Dude is a hulk.

Disappointed he apparently will not get a shot at QB, but JOK could throw the ball to taco pants and Gentry looks like he could still get it.

When I see this picture, I don't think of NFL potential or player disfunction due to playing time. I see some guys in college who are having fun. I think we get lost in the former with players, whether they had high hopes coming in or not, and how that play may seek them to leave for potentially greener pastures. But whether it was Strobels column earlier in the year stating how much he loved the University and his teammates despite struggles to see the field to Gentry helping the team by playing a new position, I see guys who genuinely having fun and enjoying their life.

Why does Gentry have helmet stickers? Do they award them for practice? That may be why there are so many. Should only be awarded for in game accomplishments in my opinion.
