GameDay Finale and Noon Games Open Thread

Submitted by B-Nut-GoBlue on

Last half hour of College GameDay wrappping up down in Tallahassee.  I think Florida State blows the Canes' out personally.  "Eat Mor Ibis" and "Nevin Shapiro paid for this sign" are my picks for best signs, FWIW.

A slate of primarily Big Ten Noon games is coming up:  Purdue can do their annual "somehow hang with Ohio State and manage to lose in the final minutes".  BTN

Wisconsin is in Iowa City taking on the Hawkeyes.  Chris Borland is apparently battling a hamstirng injury; big loss if so, Iowa's run game may be elevated because of this.  ABC

Illinois @ Penn St.  Meh.  ESPN.

Virginia Tech @ Boston College, ESPN2.

(Mississippi St. @ Jadaveon Clowney U @ 12:30, ESPN3)

Beat Sparty.  Can't wait for this one.  31 - 20 Michigan, making for feel-good evening/night ahead.

Ohio is unwatchable because they're Ohio, but especially this season, they are unwatchable. I'm so sick of seeing them blow everyone out. I swear, it's like their opponents just decide to get dumber when they play the buckeyes. I know Purdue is awful, but still. I hate them.

I don't know if it would be better for them to not make the NC game and have them claim a "national championship" or for them to get help and make it only to go the way of ND against a wildly superior opponent.  They are so much more overrated than even the voters know, but the Big Ten is just so bad.

There's a reason they haven't even sniffed a single #1 vote despite blowing teams out all season.  Anybody who watches this conference knows it is basically OSU and then everybody else, with maybe UM and MSU having an ouside chance of beating "good" teams outside of the conference.  They don't deserve to play for the title, and if they do they'll be housed thoroughly. I actually want OSU to go undefeated for two straight years and yet not play for the title just so that when they actually do start playing good teams and lose, the fans can bitch and moan about the "good old days" when they pulled 2-3 wins a year out of their asses.

The validitiy of Sagarin's rankings are very much in doubt after he changed the set the BCS uses to take out margin of victory (it was already suppose to have been removed).  He then made another mid week change to the rankings after that.

1. I quote two unrelated systems for a reason.

2. Sagarin has two systems, or three if you include his headline ranking which is a combination of the two. Sagarin ELO is the one used by the BCS and considers only wins and losses; Sagarin Power considers final scores as well. I haven't seen any reference to any modification of his Power (or "Pure Points") ranking, which is the one I quoted), so I don't know why you think it's in doubt.

...to call for a blackout today. I can only hope the fans took them at their word and came prepared with the necessaries--they'll be very happy not to be able to remember this in the morning.

That was interesting. We have 13 trophy game and the next closest conference has 4. I don't know what that says about the B1G

Naturally Iowa will go into halftime down 7-6 after four trips into the redzone.

*I better hold my tongue, Wisconsin will probably put another one up in the 1:20 left...

Ohio  has played four teams with a pulse and three were pretty competitive (PSU being the exception). The blowouts have been against much lesser teams.

They're the class  of  the conference, but let's keep things in perspective.

B1G is sooo bad, there not much hope for thos conference, we need to change big time and soon.. This conference has been bad for awhile now and i wonder why Delany hasnt done anything about it.. Maybe just maybe things will change a bit when Rutgers and Marlynd comes aboard..

How many years was the ACC awful and basically out of the national title discussion every year by mid october?  Things change, in the ACC's case it was coaching hires like Sweeney and Ficher.  It took Jimbo Fischer 3 years to get FSU going and he was on Bowden's staff.  Its

The Buckeyes really are that good.  Let's not be slappy's.....credit where it's due.  Same goes for States D......they could really hurt us today.   I can't wait until we're just that good again and it isn't this season.  My pre-season picks were 10-2 with losses against PSU and OSU.  Today's game is the only one that has me questioning my picks.  The Team will have to play their best today and nothing less.  I won't get into a coaching debate on this thread but somebody has to shit or get off the pot.   Can't watch the Purdue train wreck any more......tuning into the Wisky game and hoping for a great turn out by UM.  Go Blue!!!!

Imagine our defense MAY be a little more focused against Ohio than Akron, not saying they won't put up close to 400 but the transitive property doesn't work consistently in football, especially rivalry games, most of the time.

Purdue may have the most atrocious defense in this conference, which is shocking given the fact Illinois and IU also call the Big 10 home.  Just a horrible unit; gives me some more hope that MSU can be shut down offensively if these goobers could.

If I counted correctly, there have been 12 punts in the Wisconsin-Iowa game and this will be the 21st or 22nd drive of the game between both teams. We definitely have a nice little Big Ten game going here in Iowa City.

Iowa has definitely improved significantly from last year... This game is pretty fun to watch! Lots of good defense, but the wind is also really putting a damper on the offense. Going to Iowa to play is going to be really really tough.

I am in the minority as while I hate OSU and I hate the success I am glad Urbz is taking it to another level because it pushes UM.  UM has been content for 15+ years to have 'pretty good' teams of the 3-4 loss variety.   OSU was responding with 1-2 loss seasons.   That difference was not enough to really pressure UM.  UM also had the 97 team to constantly point to and in the 2000s that was close enough of a time where it was relevant.

Tressel was a very good coach of course but Urbz is relentless and if UM does not get its act together the gap will - as it probably is now - be a damning statement about the football program.   The gap was not big enough IMO to justify serious questions btw Carr and Tressel esp since the 1997 season (and OSU's 2002 season) were close enough in proximitiy.  But if this continues - Urbz fielding teams of the 1 loss variety (or better - lets hope not) and we continue to be cute with our 3 and 4 loss seasons that have now become a UM standard for 20 years (exl RR disaster and 1997) the gap btw the schools will be far more apparent than when Tressel was around.  The 2 teams now have recent classes that are very equal (2012-2014) so there will be no excuse of youth or cupboards beginning in 2015.   Oregon has had similar classes to us the past 7 years in terms of ranking and see what they are doing.  Urbz is doing exactly what you do in a bad conference full of poor football teams if you are among the country's elite rather than a pretender - destroy a bunch of them.

While Urbz is not a classy dude he is effective and it's a bottom line business.  It hurts to watch this short term, but long term it could be a very good thing for UM in terms of not settling for what we have settled for the past 2 decades (ex 2 years - 97 and 2006).   UM needs to raise its game and if the coaches in 2015-2017 continue with our traditional streak of 3-4 losses, while Urbz is cleaning the conference clean then it will be obvious changes are in order.  (Not saying it will happen - just saying UM needs to be at another level in 2 years)

Urban has a history of not staying for a long time. To be honest if he sees Chip Kelly have success in the NFL I could see him jumping to the next level. I also believe if he starts getting beat over and over again( les, and Saban ) I think he bolts. Don't blink on Texas either they will have some major pull when they look for their next coach.

Very difficult question.  Urbz was unique as he won and won big everywhere Utah, Florida, and is now doing it at OSU.  Saban was not Saban until he got to LSU - he was a very good coach beforehand but was one of those coaches that simply lacked the resources at other schools until he got to LSU to take it all the way.  Finding that kind of coach is difficult as a lot of coaches are like that - you could say Wiscy's coach was like that and thats why Arkansas took a chance.  Urbz is very unique in what he has done.  Urbz also has Midwest ties so lets not forget that - born in Toledo.  A Michigan coach must have some form of recruiting ties to the Midwest, especially Ohio to get at that talent base.  Yes we recruit nationally but our pool shrinks from the fact that the coach needs to have ties to Ohio HS coaches.

At this point the only coach nationally I'd have ranked near Urbz and Saban (slightly behind) is Bob Stoops.  Everyone else is "no guarantee" of what you will get.   Sometimes you just have to have good fortune on your side - UM got that with Bo, who was a quality MAC coach with Woody Hayes ties ... no one could anticipate what he brought.
