Fun Sunday Football Facts

Submitted by DrMantisToboggan on

...regarding the upcoming Advocare Classic opener against Florida, for those who are bored on the board on this offseason Sunday.

As most of us know, Michigan is undefeated against Florida. Michigan has defeated Florida in the 2003 Outback Bowl 38-30, the 2008 Capital One Bowl 41-35, and the 2016 Citrus Bowl 41-7.

In the Advocare Classic game, an SEC contestant has never lost. The conference is 5-0 in the game, with Alabama accounting for 3 of the wins (vs. Michigan, Wisconsin, and USC) and LSU accounting for 2 of the wins (vs. Oregon and TCU). Big Ten contestants have lost both of their matchups in the game.

The last three winners of the Advocare Classic (Alabama, Alabama, Florida State) have gone on to the College Football Playoff.

It will be interesting to see which streaks are broken and which streaks continue on September 2nd, and if the winner continues the game's playoff streak. As I have commented in other prediction threads, I have us winning this game against Florida, losing only one regular season game (Wisconsin), winning the conference, and making the playoffs.

WD is not going to be happy with this post. Very heavy in facts that may or may not be relevant.

Malik Zaire is still waiting on a waiver from the SEC to grad transfer to Florida. He definitely showed flashes of greatness at Notre Dame, but it would be a wild card.

Had he shown up for spring ball, I think his dual threat ability would be a cause of concern for Michigan. However, since he waited and will only have fall camp to cram in the playbook, I could easily see him being a detriment to FL.

I think Dr. Blitz will have a field day against a QB trying to learn a playbook. Other than Zaire, Luke Del Rio isn't much of a threat. Feleipe Franks is an incredibly talented prospect, but has no experience.

TLDR: Our young secondary should feast due to FL's qb shortcomings. And because Doug Nussmeier is calling the plays.

Florida is prohibited due to 2 previous grad transfers not completing the required academic credits.

Bigger question for LSU are they going to keep plugging in band aid solutions or will they ever develop a QB again. Can't make recruiting big time QB prospects easy with their current track record.

I'm starting to think the guy just likes attention, because he said Wisconsin and Harvard like a week ago. LSU could be dangerous with him and Canada at the helm.

He could go to LSU regardless though. Florida got a 3 year ban on grad transfers because their last two transfers had completed zero credit hours in a grad program. As far as I know, LSU is in good standing. It's not actually a rule change they are waiting on, but Florida wants their punishment to be reduced to a one year time-served type punishment.

It's not a rule against the SEC in particular, but an SEC rule that would bar Florida for taking him. The rule (as I remember it) is that if you take grad transfers and they wind up academically ineligible, then you can't take another grad transfer for X number of years, and Florida is still within the X number of years range.

FWIW I just read two separate reports, one from an SEC site and one from a Texas site, saying that Zaire is down to Texas and one unnamed school that is probably not Florida, and will probably announce soon. They think Florida is out.

Texas with Herman has made sense to me from the beginning for this guy. I think Zaire could do a lot of damage in that system. Texas certainly makes a lot more sense than LSU or Florida, given the respective systems of those schools. The other rumors I've heard were Wisconsin and Miami, which are, again, pro-style teams, and Harvard, which seems silly but actually seems like a good career move and more in tune with the spirit of the grad transfer rules.

EDIT: Should have read further in the Texas article, it says the Longhorns aren't optimistic.

Their receivers (Calloway is pretty good, maybe All-SEC and Cleveland is really good at times, but inconsistent) are good and their RB Scarlett is pretty good too. Other than that, they have an iffy OL and a freshman QB (lots of potential, but freshman). Calloway is their best offensive player. Martez Ivey was 2nd team All SEC last year as a Guard, but he is moving back out to Tackle this year and will have to deal with either Gary or Winovich in his first game there....so good luck to him. I would also say that their head coach and offensive coordinator are detriments to their offense.

Calloway was recently cited for Marijuana but I doubt his punishment will hold him out of our game.

Overall they probably have 2 or 3 real playmakers but the prospects of getting them good opportunities with their QB/OL and playcalling situation, against our defense nonetheless, are not good.

Bounced from the program??? McElwain gave him the "I'm not mad, I'm just really disappointed" lol. I don't think Callaway is going anywhere. He has gotten in trouble a couple times, but he was found not to be involved with the sexual assault investigation last year.

The SEC would need to change a rule for Zaire to be eligible to transfer to UF - right now the rule in question would explicitly prohibit Zaire to UF. Franks is going to be their guy.

They might get some Field goals with that kicker, but we are going to live in other teams backfield. If Florida does not have an above average o-line, Mr. Gary, Mr. Winovich, Mr. Hurst and Mr. Bush are going to introduce themselves to Mr. Franks with regularity on sept. 2nd. If they don't have a back that can pick up the blitz...... well you get it. Pain meds aside I really think we dominate this game even more than the last time. Hoorah!!. I should be totally retarded by the time football season starts but who cares. If I am drinking the kool aid, sprinkling the pixie dust or just throwing some down some chicken bones I dont care. I think we are finally back to the way I like Michigan football. Great defense and run the ball down their throats. Is summer over yet....I hate it.

Where they only show the actual plays.

One think that stuck out to me was the 2nd half was a sneak preview of the 2017 team. The younger guys stepped up and took over the team. The returning players dominated the entire 2nd half (with help from Taco).

Hurst, Bunting, McCray, Evans, Metellus, Gary and Speight (until that last aborted drive) all made the big plays that got us back into that game against an FSU team that was probably top 5 at the end of the season. I hadn't noticed at the time, but Hill made a huge block on the Evans TD that sprung him.

Watching that game really got me juiced thinking about this season. There are going to be some peaks and valleys due to youth, but the team will be damn exciting.

I do wish we had a couple snackeycake games to break in our new starters before playing the Gators, but I do think we can win this game. Won't be a pushover opponent though.

I definitely don't think it will be a pushover, especially given the styles of play and youth on both teams. I think it will be a game where it is tied or maybe we are up by a field goal at halftime. Then we make better adjustments and our talent pulls us away in the second half. I expect the talent gap in recent recruiting, as well as the coaching gap to show in a game between two young teams.

90% of QBs on any college roster will destroy you if they have all-day to throw. I'm just not betting on Franks having time. It also helps that this will be his first game. He's not a true freshman, he's had a year of college coaching, but this is his first ever game. If you're a QB you really don't want your first experience with the bullets flying to be against Don Brown with NFL talent. It's less than ideal.

Franks might be a stud one day, but if you're a betting man, I wouldn't bet on September 2, 2017 being that day.

I will tell you this, if the season plays out as you have it I think we will have a lot of crazed wolverine fans....in a good way. I don't only think we will beat Florida, but I think we crush them. Allthough we may be a little young I think the physical style of football Michigan will play, along with the speed will demoralize most teams on the schedule. Depending on QB play we could very easily be undefeated heading into the showdown in AA with osu. If Michigan wins the big ten this year the real hate will begin. Everyone has us down, I believe because they dont know the roster and how can a team who lost 17 starters even compete in the big ten east. The best kept secret will not last long though as Michigan throttles Florida by at least three touchdowns and completely shuts their offense down. Watching some clown yesterday talking about how Michigan is bringing nothing back and to take the seven their giving Florida. It might give me pause if a team that is bringing nothing back is favored I would think. I say a website where they rank the players and predict football games. Until the data came back the clown had us getting smoked by Florida only to see how highly ranked the guys still on the roster are ranked. He was like how did they not win everything last year with all this talent. Well we should have and we all no that. He changed his tune and put Michigan ranked secong in the big ten and that was with a very low ranking on the secondary because none have played. Eyes will be opened on sept. 2nd you can be sure of that. I just want Michigan in the playoffs just to see and hear the hate.
