Friday night drunking thread

Submitted by mi93 on December 18th, 2020 at 6:08 PM

Hopefully most of us are getting close to being able to wind down for the holidays (I'm not as close as I'd like to be, but c'est la vie).  It's still Friday, time to unwind from a crazy week.  Starting off with a Kangaroo (vodka-based martini with orange bitters and lemon twist), then who knows.

Here's to enjoying the evening.  What are you having?

I'm wondering the same and if these special holiday editions are still available.

I'm still, relatively speaking, a bourbon novice but my son-in-law and his dad have been slowly-but-gradually 'training' me and I'm looking to reward them over the holidays. Without it costing me too awfully much, that is.

Over 200 people lined up and all was gone in a very short time. Found out about it an hour or so after it happened. So ,no I didn't get anything and it is all gone. The menu and process is on Cloud Nine Liquor Store's facebook page. Have you ever been there neighbor? I go to their sister store, Cedar Rock Liquor. This is where I heard about the release. Oh, they charged state min on everything. I was hoping to find a jug of Rock Hill Farms. It was on the list....

I've never been to Cloud Nine Liquor, but I have been by Cedar Rock a couple times.

But like I indicated above,  I'm not yet what I'd call knowledgeable about bourbon.  So when I saw a couple comments about bourbon holiday special releases, it caught my eye.

Anyway, like I also said, I'm looking to purchase a couple bottles as gifts. Anyone with suggestions in the upper middle shelf price range?

Hey rob f: I am no expert on bourbon but trying to learn. Here are a couple suggestions that are readily available: Four Roses Single barrel or Small batch select. Old Forester 1910, 1920, 1897 BIB, Statesman. Henry McKenna 10 year. Knob Creek 9 year. Russell Reserve 10 year. None of these will break the bank. Good luck ?. If you want, I can meet you at Cedar Rock. Merry Christmas neighbor ?

Yes, I'll drunk to that!

Vacation started today. No more school for the rest of the year! After school I drove all over town delivering homemade cookies and fudge to my homeroom students since I haven't seen them in person in five weeks. I'm glad I live in a small town, so 'all over town' doesn't involve a lot of traffic.

I'm drunking Red's Rye IPA from Founders for starters. Part of their Brewed for MI series.

Celiac disease. They insist on making beer out of barley, wheat and occasionally rye, all of which contain gluten.

There just aren't a lot of what I would consider decent gluten-free beers out there. Green's is decent but I can't get it locally (I'm in Toronto); the same with Omission. I can get Daura Damm (imported from Spain), which is decent but boring, and Glutenberg makes a decent IPA and a decent but boring blonde ale.

So I don't drink a lot of beer any more.

(And drinking a regular beer anyway is just not worth it. Trust me.)

I've been pretty cautious about whiskey; sometimes they add the grain mash back into the distillate. Which would be a problem.

I'm actually pretty happy with red wine.

Now moonshine is a different story. My wife's family is in Kentucky and I used to work with a guy who immigrated to Canada from Serbia, and they all made moonshine...

The tannins in red wine can give me headaches if I drink too much of it. I also have to avoid gluten. If you venture into whiskey, stick to straight bourbon and single malt scotches to avoid grain blends, but for the most part the distillation process generally gets the gluten out. Sorry to hear about the beer issue though. I love it too but had to leave that world behind.

This Kangaroo that you speak of sounds delicious and I would like to try one.

I’m about to pop open an Alchemist Focal Banger and cooking up a couple pizzas.
