Forde on the "Coaching Carousel"

Submitted by DeBored on

So Pat Forde took a lap around the NCAA to talk about coaches, hot seats, rumors, etc.  Obviously Michigan was featured, and surprisingly he said the following:

"So what to do? Dash colleague Dan Wetzel already has unilaterally nominated Stoops for the Michigan job – and it actually makes a lot of sense."

Later on he stated that if Harbaugh and Miles won't come we should go after Mullen (duh) and if he doesn't come, possibly Schiano (KILL ME NOW!)

The Stoops to Michigan bandwagon has another writer on board.  I'm wondering if there isn't some commotion going on behind the scenes here.  Is someone close to Stoops feeding these writers with info?

Dude u r so awesome blaming Hoke ' s failings on a flat-out warrior QB who has been brutalized, pulverized, and besides that very poorly coached while giving his all to Michigan. Devin no doubt is not a good QB now, but he was, man, he was...

It's interesting that he seems to think Muschamp might be safe, but even more interesting that he's parroting the RR to Florida line that has been trotted out before. It's a natural fit and maybe the best case scenario for us as it would absolutely remove any serious competition for Mullen if he is amiable to leaving Starkville.

I think 60% of the Board could have given a more detailed and informed synopsis on the coaching search than that provided by Forde.

I think Todd Graham is the guy, assuming we gutter the Harbowl. Anything less than that I start to prepare myself for a Hoke level hire. Or worse.

I'm all for the Stoops to Michigan news to catch on and hopefully be true if there is no Harbaugh (either one) to Michigan.

FUCK NO to Schiano. Why do people pump this guy up? i don't get it.

I sometimes wonder, given so much of the RR/Lloyd bitterness on this site, if people actually read Three and Out or if they just read the excerpts Brian posted. Schiano did not turn us down because he felt he was too good for us. He wanted the PSU job and when he was told not to wait around for it he tried to beg us to hire him weeks later.

I will probably just write another angry post on the internet. Still: There is no part of Greg Schiano working here that I would enjoy. I think I would simply become an M basketball fan until that burning trash barge drifted out to sea.

I don't know if anyone else had this issue, but the link that the OP posted to Wetzel's article must have been to the Yahoo feed because it didn't work for me just now. Here's the static link to the story, in the event you have the same issue - LINK

Interesting story... My brother's kids play flag football back in the Youngstown area (Boardman).  It is a Catholic enterprise that runs it.

For his kids age groups there are  4 teams.  The teams are named after college programs.  Obviously one team is 'Ohio State', team two is Notre Dame (Catholic league program), team three is Oklahoma and team four is Nebraska.  Youngstown being the home of the Stoops' clan and Pelini's.

It would be great to see these kids wearing Michigan on their chest in a Youngstown league.  However, they would probably go with Kentucky over Michigan.

Cool story, bro...

But just goes to show you how the area feels about the Stoops' and Pelinis'.

There is no white knight.

Stoops, Mullen, Harbaugh, Miles all have jobs and all seem unlikely to come to Michigan.

Schiano is a very real possibility. He's a horrible choice, so if informal discussions with the other 4 guys go nowhere, I'd rather have Hoke over Schiano.

I meant that they are all at equally big football programs (except Mullen, but he's a Mississippi guy) and all very successful. It's not like their employers can't match any salary that Michigan throws at them.

From what I gathered, Sam was saying JH would take Michigan's call and listen.  Not that we would be the only call he would take.

We would have competition with other NFL team, i.e. Bears.  Nothing is going on right now through back channels to make this happen.  He thinks Hackett will make the call and maybe be brought in full time.  But Harbaugh is not a long shot.  But a true consideration.

Sam also said that far from a "long shot", people he knows who are close to Harbaugh have told him that Harbaugh would be "very interested" in the job, and it wouldn't take a blank check to bring him. Probably in the $5-6 Million range.

In not so many words, Sam also believes that the process for hiring a permanent AD is largely separate and distinct from whatever happens regarding the search for a head coach.

Via Sam's contacts and what he has heard....

Harbaugh would be VERY, VERY  interested in hearing form Michigan.

Harbaugh will not demand an unreasonable financial package.

Hackett may likely be the one handling all of this.

Action one way or the other (keeping Hoke or releasing Hoke) will take place after the last game.

I think the best case scenario for Michigan to land a top tier coach would be if Florida wins out or at least makes an appearance in the SEC champ game. Then Michigan goes 1-1 or 0-2, sigh, then Hoke gets canned, leaving Michigan as the only major coaching job available. I dont see any blue blood programs being opened unless one of them leave for Michigan.

This would be a moot point if Harbaugh accepts the job, of course. Im assuming Michigan would be the only college coaching job that he'd leave the NFL for. This is more for the guys like Stoops, Miles, Patterson, etc...

Not always, but usually in sports when a coaching change happens the new coach coming in is dramatically different in X's and O's or personality.

Outgoing coach: defensive mind...bring in an offensive guy

Outgoing coach: players coach...bring in more of a disciplinarian

Replace the previous coaches weaknesses with someone new who thrives in that area. Rich Rod struggled with the programs voice and connected the current team with the past players and fanbase. His defenses were also bad. Bring in Hoke who was a change in those two key areas.

Not always the case, but it does happen frequently

From Big Ten lunch links on ESPN. Pretty much sums our national perception. How did it get to this point?

3. Michigan meltdown: If nothing else, the Wolverines can claim the national lead in public apologies this season. And the mess at Michigan this season isn’t just limited to on-field issues or even the athletic department, with president Mark Schlissel the latest to stick his foot in his mouth and seek forgiveness. Given everything that has gone wrong with the Wolverines this season, it’s getting to the point where nothing can really come as a surprise anymore and missteps barely even cause people to bat an eye. But that’s still pretty remarkable considering the history, tradition and reputation of that university on the field and in the classroom, and it’s fair to wonder if perhaps that might have an impact on the likely coaching search the program will be starting after the season. The problems don’t seem to be limited to just the football team, and maybe that will give a high-profile candidate a reason to pause if the Wolverines come calling.
