The Football Team is traveling around Michigan in Summer 2022

Submitted by MadGatter on March 8th, 2022 at 11:07 AM

Hello gents. I didn't see this posted anywhere and thought it was worthy of my first post:

Previously under Harbaugh the football team had annual trips around the world going to South Africa, France and Italy. Covid killed that idea for a couple years but they are now bringing it back in the Summer of 2022 with a trip around Michigan. Looks like they are hitting Detroit, Mackinaw, Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes (on the map maybe it looks like Ludington?)

I like the idea of the team experiencing what Michigan as the state has to offer especially as most of the team is from out of state. When I was a student, I found my out of state friends at Michigan didn't ever get the chance to explore Michigan's attractions and its cool that the football team is giving them that chance.

Anyways I thought it would be a good discussion on here. What other spots in Michigan are they missing out on?

One of the things that makes Michigan so dynamic as an athletic department (particularly BB and FB) is you can compete and win championships while broadening your horizons and exposure for life after the field and court.

As a kid I always liked the Soo Locks.  It may be boring as an adult, but it was super cool to watch the huge freight ships go from Superior level to Huron level.

Also we always went to a cool bar called Antlers that had tons of mounted animals and would randomly set off bells and whistles.  Good times.

Again probably boring for college age kids, but I thought it was. Plus I just have a foundness for the UP in general.  We went every year.

I would skip Detroit (the players have plenty of opportunity to visit Detroit should they choose to do so) and add a stop or two in the UP. Pictured rocks and Tahquamenon falls aren't that long of a drive past the bridge and are awesome.

I'm disappointed they don't get to go to the UP - the UP in the summer is one of the best places in the whole country to visit imo, there's such great natural beauty

While I fully support the team doing this, sending them to Sleeping Bear Dunes sounds like a great way to lose someone to a torn ACL...

Also wonder if/how this could be expanded on with NIL. Seems like players could profit from local autograph signings, advertising where they're going, paid viewing for player led practices/workouts, etc. Profit off providing a local experience to a bunch of fans that usually have to travel a few hours to get exposure to the team.

Pictured Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, any one of dozens of sleepy resort towns on lakes, Frankenmuth... Every state has dozens of places worth exploring, and Michigan has more than most. I'm happy this is being revived!

But queue the complaints - why don't they spend time on football?  It's a waste!  It's a distraction!

Seriously, complainers, get a life...

Hopefully, this generates a ton of fan enthusiasm and P.R. Should do a satirical tour of the burned out sections and couches of East Lansing.

EDIT: I wonder if they could do a little barnstorming, play some pickup touch football games against local kids? This would be very cool to do with basketball, too. If we did it on the regular, we'd never lose a recruiting battle to Izzo again. Hand out some maize n' blue swag, come on!!!

It would be cool if they team gets to water sports like sailing, wake boarding, and fishing. People who didn't grow up around water have often never done any of that stuff.

Btw, isn't it time for the bball team to do a summer exhibition trip?

They should absolutely go to the UP! Take the Pictured Rocks tour or hike some of the trails there. Hit up Tahquamenon Falls and Iron Mountain. Whitefish point? Drummond Island? There's a wealth of stuff to do up there.

If they go to the U.P. I wonder if Harbaugh makes a trip to the Shipwreck museum in Paradise, given his interest in the Edmund Fitzgerald. From there I would go Tahquamenon falls--> Pictured Rocks--> Marquette. End the trip with a stop at NMU's football facility the Superior Dome, where Lloyd Carr is on the wall of fame. Get a pasty at Jean Kay's and go to the beach on Lake Superior.

Only wish is that they could do this as part of their practice schedule. I love my city of Detroit, but the only benefit to going there is if you're including an open practice for the public at Ford Field or Wayne State -- and they've already done that.

Depending on the length of the trip, I could understand why they would not explore too much of the U.P. I assume they're driving, and going all the way to Pictured Rocks is a day's drive on its own.

Very cool, I remember Mackinac as a 3 year old being in the very back kiddy seat of a tri-tandem bicycle with my dad and older sister, and being royally pissed that I was not allowed to pedal. Good times.

I do think though if I were a college kid I would get far more excited about Europe or South Africa, but very cool. It might create a deeper connection for out of state players with the state, and maybe some players who spent most of their lives in the Detroit-metro bubble will get a taste of “Pure Michigan”.

While this may not be as flashy as previous trips, I think this trip will do a great job of showing what the state of Michigan has to offer

@rc15.  Torn ACL, really?  I've run down those dunes quite a few times in my life and I'm in terrible shape and have never hurt anything other than my pride when I get to tumbling.

Lighten up.  They'll be fine.

I would agree with the other posters. The UP is a must. Our SoCal family traveled to the UP last summer. (In my 4 years at U of M, never went above Mount Pleasant, so it was all new to me.) We went the western route through Escanaba to Drummond Island and stopped at Kitch Iti Kipi, which I thought was very cool. Also hit the bridge, Traverse City, and Sleeping Bear Dunes. We usually take a side trip in Europe every summer as my wife's family is from Barcelona, but we really like all that Michigan has to do and see.

I would also think a place like South Haven to enjoy the beach for a day or two would be in order.

As a guy who lives 5 minutes away from the sleeping bear sand dunes (right next to Glen Arbor btw), it would be a welcome scene seeing some wolverines.

U.P.

Photo ops at the Soo Locks would be tremendous.

Also, I want to see Harbaugh on Mackinaw Island picking out fudge flavors and have a 200 message thread about how what flavor he picked signals who's the starting QB.

Sagatuck is a nice area...beautiful beaches.

This is a great idea BTW.  Should be good for in state recruiting. Also a lot of people from SE mich/Detroit metro never venture around the state.

It's a good idea to stay local. A good selling point for the out of state guys not only to explore what Michigan has to offer but should be a selling point for their once and younger HS teammates as a recruitment tool.

Hopefully, this could be a better way to recruit the blue chip in state FB players.

This should be relaxing trip before the fall camp training begins.

These trips have been one of my favorite things about the Harbaugh era.  I love that he wants to give them a complete college experience.

Agree that they definitely should visit the UP if they can.

Isle Royale National Park.   Some of these guys may have never been camping -- it's also a pretty decent workout carrying your gear around the island with you.

As a Ludington native, that is definitely the Silver Lake sand dunes pictured on the map and in the video with the dune buggies.  SMH at everyone who sees sand and automatically thinks Sleeping Bear Dunes.

How about the tip of the Thumb?  Caseville to Port Austin has some great parks and beach area. I grew up in a SMALL town in Huron County and loved going to the beaches when I was a kid.

Yeah, that drive from Romulus to Ann Arbor is so ... scenic! Can't imagine why the out-of-staters wouldn't want to see more.

After hiking to Lake Michigan at Sleeping Bear dunes, my then 16-year-old daughter asked, "Whose sick idea was it to make this a National Park?"  She was half-joking, but it's not an amusement park. But I'm sure the athletic department will make it a very positive experience for the team. I like the idea.

I would take them to Hell. Think about the kids. That's a good picture with funny faces to send back to the parents. It's on the way north. Sort of.

And then Pirates Cove miniature golf in Traverse City before staying at the Grand Traverse Resort...then get a pic at the Bear course or any sign about Jack Nicklaus designing it.

And then tandem bicycles around Mackinac Island to see the arch. Then fudge or taffy pics or just play dress up in Brit uniforms by the Grand Hotel. And the boat ride itself is worth some fun and pics.

Then yeah a few beaches and piers + ice cream. I mean Sleeping Bear dunes is cool, but they could ride the Mac Wood's Dune Rides at Silver Lake for a little more speed (not too exciting, but a good unique pic and put each set of lineman in a car each). Grand Haven has a really long pier so that's a good one if it is on the way and could always stay for the Musical Fountain just to see something halfway novel if staying there overnight.

Don't forget Michigan's Adventure on a free day also. Could do the water park there or one of the other ones in Michigan. Every college kid likes a good water park.

Save some hours in the car and just go as far as Mackinaw City. What other places are good for pics?
