First iteration of 'The Pose'. NNTP, the Paul Bunyan pose

Submitted by victors2000 on November 21st, 2019 at 4:34 AM

I know it's Indiana week, but I've been too busy to post this. The Paul Bunyan pose DPJ struck last year was an instant classic and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of it in the future. I can't believe he was the first one to do it, but I can't recall anyone else striking it. At an institution of higher learning such as ours I can't believe it took so long for this to happen; was he the first?

DPJ = genius

Not only is he an exceptionally gifted athlete, he is a stellar student and future physician. He also invented the most apt and iconic rivalry pose in the history of the UM-MSU rivalry.  World class - let’s enjoy him for 3 more games.

There have only been 4 WRs who have measured 6'6" or taller at the NFL Combine in the past ten years, They are:

  • Ramses Barden (2009), 6'6", 4.51, 85 pick (3rd rd)
  • DeAndre Brown (2011), 6'6", 4.59, undrafted
  • Brandon Coleman (2014), 6'6", 4.56, undrafted
  • Darren Waller (2015), 6'6", 4.46, 204 pick (6th rd)

Link

If you lower the height to 6'3" (6'6" is really tall for a WR), and look for under 4.40 40-times in the past 10 years there are only a total 11 prospects at the combine who hit that. Link. Most are not relevant, but there are a few names that might stand out:

  • Julio Jones (2011), 6'3", 4.34, 6th pick
  • Michael Floyd (2012), 6'3", 4.40, 13th pick
  • Kevin White LOL (2015), 6'3", 4.35, 7th pick
  • DJ Chark  (2018), 6'3", 4.34, undrafted
  • MVS (2018), 6'4", 4.37, 174th pick (5th rd)
  • DK Metcalf (2019), 6'3", 4.33, 64th pick (2nd rd)

Julio is a freak.

Actually, I stood back to back with DPJ recently and he was at least 3 inches shorter than me.  I am 5'9" - so he is 5'6" tops.

Also, I challenged him to a 40 yard dash and we both came in around 5 seconds.

He is definitely not NFL draft material for 2020.  However, if he stays another year, I am guessing that he grows six inches and shaves 0.6 seconds off his 40 time - so I am projecting him as a 1st round pick in 2021.

His college production has stunk compared to his athletic talent, but that has more to do with scheme and poor overall offensive execution.

I could see myself watching the NFL in 3-5 years and shaking my head about how this receiving corp has (not) been used. Like LSU fans watching Jarvis and OBJ a couple of years ago.

Lol!  All the folks down-voting lilpenny, not recognizing obvious (and hilarious) sarcasm.

Or was it?

On the one hand, DPJ is awesome, awesome, awesome.

But on the other hand, he is only 5'4" tall and runs a 10.8 second 40-yard dash.

Only one of the previous two statements is true.  Some folks can't tell which one.

At this point, I can only blame myself for clicking on poorly titled, largely useless board posts. Sometimes it's hard to know that they have absolutely no content whatsoever, and are therefore poorly titled. But it's basically the new standard, so what else should one expect? I apologize to myself.

The title could be improved, but I like this thread. It made two things that I've never thought about before explicit: that DPJ is the first to do the pose, and that this was always a locker room trophy before Dantonio shortsightedly brought it on the field. Thanks, OP.

All I learned from your posts, by way of contrast, is that you act like an asshole to strangers on the internet. (It's ok. I do too, obviously. Although FWIW I think this is different, because unlike the OP, you appear to deserve it.)

Huh. Looking back through my recent posts and I find them all quite cheerful! They even seem to have elicited some good feedback. Maybe this comes across as uglier than I meant it. I do, however, think that mere thoughts should probably be saved up for something more substantive than this one offers. A few people agreed with me.

Farther down the thread, Wolverine Historian corrects one of the two things you've explicitly learned.

My problem was not with the content, more with the title which you readily acknowledge was problematic. Of course, if it had been clearly asking a question rather than implying that there was information being offered, I guess there wouldn't be as many comments. Hence the bad title. I cannot fathom why people continue to post "clickbait" here when it's not even their site.

But whatever. I was complaining more about myself bothering with it than blaming the OP. Feel free to interpret my comments as you wish I guess. The fact that I'm back here again indicates I have not listened to myself.

Not according to the interviews on "Divided We Stand".  Javon Ringer said Dantonio decided to present it on the field.  Jon Falk said that the MSU equipment manager contacted him and said that they wanted it on the field.  He said that it was always a locker room trophy.  They told him that Coach D wants to do it on the field if they win.

This was prior to the 2008 game.

I hated "Divided We Stand".  Seemed like it was just a series of greatest hits of Spartan upsets in football in it's quest to put mean old arrogant Michigan in it's place; and then, oh yeah, John Beilein kind of made them competitive with us in basketball.  We got cast as the villain and MSU was the hero and they trotted out Jake Long to say all the inflammatory things MSU fans expect of Michigan and Devin Gardner to play the role of the vanquished foe.

I was so pissed after I finished watching that piece of shit; and you know they rushed it out before this season's game because the rivalry is pretty much reverting back to form.  Imagine rolling that documentary out next season after MSU has been curb stomped by us two seasons in a row and trying to cast Dantonio as the benevolent savior.

If Blake O'Neil falls on the ball what happens? According to the PBP, MSU recovered at the Michigan 38. Let's say we recover at that spot (or immediately tackle the recovering MSU player), that's a 55 yd FG attempt? Is there any doubt MSU walks off with the win there?

I'm convinced we were doomed. That day had a nightmarish quality from the moment my feet hit the floor.

I don't understand why we don't paint the pants maize. It's our trophy, paint over those ugly pants. If Sparty wants to paint them green when they get it back in 20 years, that's fine.
