First iteration of 'The Pose'. NNTP, the Paul Bunyan pose
I know it's Indiana week, but I've been too busy to post this. The Paul Bunyan pose DPJ struck last year was an instant classic and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of it in the future. I can't believe he was the first one to do it, but I can't recall anyone else striking it. At an institution of higher learning such as ours I can't believe it took so long for this to happen; was he the first?
November 21st, 2019 at 5:11 AM ^
DPJ = genius
Not only is he an exceptionally gifted athlete, he is a stellar student and future physician. He also invented the most apt and iconic rivalry pose in the history of the UM-MSU rivalry. World class - let’s enjoy him for 3 more games.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:16 AM ^
How about we enjoy him for 18 more games? As gifted as he may be, it does not overcome his lack of height and speed for the next level.
2 short + 2 slow = 4 years of college
EDIT: I didn't realize I needed the /s. Does no one remember the posts about Jourdan Lewis being "too short" to leave early.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:30 AM ^
Yeah, way too short at 6’2” and way to slow with a 4.42 40yd time as a high school underclassman at The Opening.
/smh
November 21st, 2019 at 8:34 AM ^
He is one of the few WR’s that is not 6’6” and does not run a sub 4.3.
November 21st, 2019 at 10:32 AM ^
I doubt there are any in NFL under 6'6 and with a sub 4.3.
November 21st, 2019 at 11:36 AM ^
There have only been 4 WRs who have measured 6'6" or taller at the NFL Combine in the past ten years, They are:
- Ramses Barden (2009), 6'6", 4.51, 85 pick (3rd rd)
- DeAndre Brown (2011), 6'6", 4.59, undrafted
- Brandon Coleman (2014), 6'6", 4.56, undrafted
- Darren Waller (2015), 6'6", 4.46, 204 pick (6th rd)
If you lower the height to 6'3" (6'6" is really tall for a WR), and look for under 4.40 40-times in the past 10 years there are only a total 11 prospects at the combine who hit that. Link. Most are not relevant, but there are a few names that might stand out:
- Julio Jones (2011), 6'3", 4.34, 6th pick
- Michael Floyd (2012), 6'3", 4.40, 13th pick
- Kevin White LOL (2015), 6'3", 4.35, 7th pick
- DJ Chark (2018), 6'3", 4.34, undrafted
- MVS (2018), 6'4", 4.37, 174th pick (5th rd)
- DK Metcalf (2019), 6'3", 4.33, 64th pick (2nd rd)
Julio is a freak.
November 21st, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
Calvin Johnson is more than 10 years ago but he'd make the list.
Vernon Davis had a 4.38 40 too as a 250 pound TE.
Randy Moss.
November 21st, 2019 at 2:56 PM ^
Devin Funchess.
November 21st, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
That was my thought too. He's listed at 6'4" or 6'5" depending on the source.
November 21st, 2019 at 9:55 AM ^
Listed heights are bs.
My cousin's ex-husband's brother was the friend of the equipment manager at Cass Tech, and DPJ is really only 5'-8"
November 21st, 2019 at 12:03 PM ^
Actually, I stood back to back with DPJ recently and he was at least 3 inches shorter than me. I am 5'9" - so he is 5'6" tops.
Also, I challenged him to a 40 yard dash and we both came in around 5 seconds.
He is definitely not NFL draft material for 2020. However, if he stays another year, I am guessing that he grows six inches and shaves 0.6 seconds off his 40 time - so I am projecting him as a 1st round pick in 2021.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:41 AM ^
You have so nailed this. Now go and watch the high school clip of this POS athlete leaving from the free throw line, leaping over three of his teammates and dunking.
The kid is a world class athlete. He is progressing nicely. DPJ and his family get to make the decisions here.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:57 AM ^
His college production has stunk compared to his athletic talent, but that has more to do with scheme and poor overall offensive execution.
I could see myself watching the NFL in 3-5 years and shaking my head about how this receiving corp has (not) been used. Like LSU fans watching Jarvis and OBJ a couple of years ago.
November 21st, 2019 at 9:18 AM ^
.....or like Michigan fans watching Tom Brady!
November 21st, 2019 at 9:34 AM ^
All you people negging this and yelling at LilPenny, do you not believe this comment was a joke? You know, the whole thing where you trash your own player to pretend that they should stay in school?
That was my take on it.
November 21st, 2019 at 9:43 AM ^
lol This has only been a "thing" on this blog for 2 years now.
People are stupid.
#DPJneedsseasoning ;-)
November 21st, 2019 at 11:27 AM ^
Really hoping this is amazing sarcasm.
November 21st, 2019 at 10:46 PM ^
Lol! All the folks down-voting lilpenny, not recognizing obvious (and hilarious) sarcasm.
Or was it?
On the one hand, DPJ is awesome, awesome, awesome.
But on the other hand, he is only 5'4" tall and runs a 10.8 second 40-yard dash.
Only one of the previous two statements is true. Some folks can't tell which one.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:58 AM ^
Makes sense. His parents are both Michigan grads and his dad is an ortho.
November 21st, 2019 at 10:56 AM ^
My older sis was friends with his mom Roz when DPJ was in middle school.
November 21st, 2019 at 5:14 AM ^
At this point, I can only blame myself for clicking on poorly titled, largely useless board posts. Sometimes it's hard to know that they have absolutely no content whatsoever, and are therefore poorly titled. But it's basically the new standard, so what else should one expect? I apologize to myself.
November 21st, 2019 at 5:16 AM ^
I must add... You were too busy to post this? How long did this take?
Dammit. I apologize to myself again. Sorry, self. Get back to work, self. Start drinking and don't go to bed, self.
November 21st, 2019 at 9:01 AM ^
I think that we need new guidelines for creating posts, and they should be adhered to by admin. They should not include 'having God send me a stray thought and turning it into a board post.'
November 21st, 2019 at 10:15 AM ^
The title could be improved, but I like this thread. It made two things that I've never thought about before explicit: that DPJ is the first to do the pose, and that this was always a locker room trophy before Dantonio shortsightedly brought it on the field. Thanks, OP.
All I learned from your posts, by way of contrast, is that you act like an asshole to strangers on the internet. (It's ok. I do too, obviously. Although FWIW I think this is different, because unlike the OP, you appear to deserve it.)
November 21st, 2019 at 12:30 PM ^
Huh. Looking back through my recent posts and I find them all quite cheerful! They even seem to have elicited some good feedback. Maybe this comes across as uglier than I meant it. I do, however, think that mere thoughts should probably be saved up for something more substantive than this one offers. A few people agreed with me.
November 22nd, 2019 at 5:24 AM ^
I replied to Other Andrew, not to you, MGlobules.
November 29th, 2019 at 3:19 AM ^
Farther down the thread, Wolverine Historian corrects one of the two things you've explicitly learned.
My problem was not with the content, more with the title which you readily acknowledge was problematic. Of course, if it had been clearly asking a question rather than implying that there was information being offered, I guess there wouldn't be as many comments. Hence the bad title. I cannot fathom why people continue to post "clickbait" here when it's not even their site.
But whatever. I was complaining more about myself bothering with it than blaming the OP. Feel free to interpret my comments as you wish I guess. The fact that I'm back here again indicates I have not listened to myself.
November 21st, 2019 at 6:11 AM ^
It was always a locker room trophy until Mork brought it to the field. Now he's getting what he asked for
November 21st, 2019 at 6:22 AM ^
Yeah I was unaware of the significance of the trophy (in comparison to say The Jug) until MSU decided to make it their superbowl trophy.
I'm glad we're back to hitting them over the head with it.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:04 AM ^
IIRC, they started this new tradition on our field. Which I say “thanks” because we will win a lot more of these games than Sparty and their fans get to watch our team Party!
November 21st, 2019 at 7:00 AM ^
I think that was only true for Michigan. Pretty sure MSU always carried it around the field when they won.
November 21st, 2019 at 7:25 AM ^
That’s why nobody knows about this. Michigan State rarely won before the past decade.
happy to see the balance restored.
November 21st, 2019 at 7:54 AM ^
Not according to the interviews on "Divided We Stand". Javon Ringer said Dantonio decided to present it on the field. Jon Falk said that the MSU equipment manager contacted him and said that they wanted it on the field. He said that it was always a locker room trophy. They told him that Coach D wants to do it on the field if they win.
This was prior to the 2008 game.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:07 AM ^
“Divided We Stand” was pretty good. Didn’t realize that in a recent stretch of basketball games, we were 7-7 against State. I thought they won a few more; good for us.
November 21st, 2019 at 10:23 AM ^
I hated "Divided We Stand". Seemed like it was just a series of greatest hits of Spartan upsets in football in it's quest to put mean old arrogant Michigan in it's place; and then, oh yeah, John Beilein kind of made them competitive with us in basketball. We got cast as the villain and MSU was the hero and they trotted out Jake Long to say all the inflammatory things MSU fans expect of Michigan and Devin Gardner to play the role of the vanquished foe.
I was so pissed after I finished watching that piece of shit; and you know they rushed it out before this season's game because the rivalry is pretty much reverting back to form. Imagine rolling that documentary out next season after MSU has been curb stomped by us two seasons in a row and trying to cast Dantonio as the benevolent savior.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:31 AM ^
How little brotherish of him.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:57 AM ^
I think we'll be grateful for some time to come.
November 21st, 2019 at 10:18 AM ^
After the Spartan Savings Time screw job in 2001, Jeff Smoker was parading Paul Bunyan around on the field afterwards. It was sickening. So that technically didn't start with Dantonio on the MSU side.
November 21st, 2019 at 9:44 AM ^
....and that DOUCHE BAG connor cook went running to the U of M students corner in the NW corner of the field and was hoisting it up towards the students at the end of the 2015 game, what a fucking asshole!!!
November 21st, 2019 at 10:26 AM ^
Don't fumble the snap and if you do fumble the snap, just fall on the ball and don't try to get the punt off. Lessons for the future.
*Sigh*
November 21st, 2019 at 11:02 AM ^
How bout call Time out, get people lined up properly and make everyone aware of the situation -they're bringing the house.
November 21st, 2019 at 12:51 PM ^
We were out of timeouts. We had called our last one with 10 seconds left.
November 21st, 2019 at 3:52 PM ^
well, it wouldn't hurt to take a delay of game penalty and reset.
November 21st, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
I think you shouldn't run a normal punt play there. Line up in the shotgun and have the QB pooch it. Don't bring in a guy cold off the bench to receive a 15-yard punt snap when all you want is to get the kick off.
November 21st, 2019 at 3:48 PM ^
If Blake O'Neil falls on the ball what happens? According to the PBP, MSU recovered at the Michigan 38. Let's say we recover at that spot (or immediately tackle the recovering MSU player), that's a 55 yd FG attempt? Is there any doubt MSU walks off with the win there?
I'm convinced we were doomed. That day had a nightmarish quality from the moment my feet hit the floor.
November 21st, 2019 at 3:55 PM ^
It's also possible that MSU has enough time to run one offensive play to get into better FG range, depending on how long the punt play lasts.
November 21st, 2019 at 11:00 AM ^
Connor is playing in the XFL....just what he deserves....another Sparty NFL flameout
November 21st, 2019 at 7:10 AM ^
DPJ is a world class troller of MSU. It never gets old!
November 21st, 2019 at 7:52 AM ^
I don't understand why we don't paint the pants maize. It's our trophy, paint over those ugly pants. If Sparty wants to paint them green when they get it back in 20 years, that's fine.
November 21st, 2019 at 8:05 AM ^
I think it's better that they made a pair of tiny football pants to put on the trophy.
