Finebaum explains recruiting ethics to John U. Bacon on OTL

Submitted by Victor Hale II on
I normally won't watch or listen to anything featuring PF, but JUB was on. Good thing for him, as he surely learned a lot about ethics and how shady Jim Harbaugh really is, once Finebaum broke it down for him. http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=18691987

Love getting my daily dose of "Ethics and Recruiting" from an SEC talking head. You've got Bama players driving nicer cars than most business professionals, Ole Miss players blatantly saying they took money, and local New Orleans HS coaches boycotting sending players to their local school.

Listening to talking penises isn't my thing....however based on the OPs comments I can't help but be struck by Finebaum's raging hypocrisy.  His intense lack of curiosity about how recruits & their parents obtain large paydays at SEC schools is interesting.

SEC is a pond of floatsam & jetsam that smells like a 2 week old used tampon.  Harbaugh bashing is nothing but an attempt to take the spotlight off Finebaum's masters.

From this clip, followed another clip.  http://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/18686994

Here, they debate about Jim Harbaugh hiring the dad of the top dual threat QB.  Forget about what they say in their "debate", but the ginger on the left refers to him as Tom Harbaugh.  And then the other commentator tries to correct him by saying his name is John Harbaugh.

ESPN analysts are clowns. insert Picard double face palm.

Marcelus Wiley makes a great point, which is that Harbaugh is legally hiring the qualified dad in lieu of shady "bagmen" payments which everyone knows are being made. Same thing with the end of semester study abroad trips. He's simply doing what other programs doing (benefits to kids and family), but doing it within the rules.

Finebaum is an ass.  There are 120 other schools that could have hired this guy.  Would they all be seen as unethical?  Don't hate Harbaugh because people are drawn to him and want to work for him in order to learn from the master!

You and me both.  Haven't watched a sportcenter in years, and honestly, I haven't missed it one iota.  Highlight shows that show 10 minutes of highlights and 50 min of talking heads is the biggest waste of time in my opinion.

Oh you mean the up and coming talented, enthusiastic, and hungry coaches he's built relationships with over the last two years? Why not hire people you're impressed with and want to work with? He clearly has an eye for talent on the field and on the sideline. It's not like he's hiring just anyone to get a recruit. All these people are extremely good at what they do as well. Wheatley and the new guy aren't even worth arguing about. We know what the team mom does and how important she is in her role. He explained how important of a role Biff Poggi plays the other day. Partridge just won recruiter of the year or some shit. Bush I'm sure has a big role and is being groomed to be an assistant soon. Partridge, Poggi, and Bush all ran powerhouse programs. They're highly successful and are good people to have on your team.

why do i have the feeling that if finnbauam ever faced off with harbaugh it would be just  like cowherd. he never stopped bashing jim until they were face to face and then his whole attitude changed and he had nothing but nice things to say about harbaugh. what a bunch of scared little girls.

All of Harbaugh's hires of this nature that raised eyebrows have worked out great and are still with the program . . . Momma Gwen, Partridge, and so on.

The man knows who and how to hire.

Finebaum has no case.

Big YAAAWN. What Finebaum and ESPN really want is for people to talk about him. The best way to get that to happen is to talk about Jim Harbaugh. When we win the national championship, Finebaum will be saying what a great coach Harbaugh is, and act like he has been saying it all along. He has made JH part of his schtick, and it is just plain tiresome.

and this just perfectly picked me up!

This is just off season gold. Someone ask Paul about the bagmen, until we get an answer on the SEC bagmen he needs to close his pie hole.

Oh and 14 guys invted to the combine.

Let's go through this.

Is hiring the associate of a potential commit illegal?
No.

Is hiring the associate of a potential commit bad/wrong?
It doesn't seem so.  They are all qualified people who contribute positively at Michigan.  It would be wrong if we hired Momma Gwen and then fired her as soon as Wayne Lyons' paperwork was in.  It would be bad if we were to hire Chris Partridge and then fire him as soon as Jabrill Peppers had left for the NFL.
We aren't treating these people as means to an end; they are worthy ends in their own right.

Is hiring the associate of a potential commit *unfair*?
Any school could have pursued our eventual staff members.  We're paying them what other programs would pay them.  Harbaugh has a burgeoning coaching tree.  It's mutually beneficial.
Maybe it's true that Greg Mattison wouldn't have left the NFL for anywhere but Michigan.
Maybe it's true that Ty Wheatley Sr. wouldn't have left the pros to go anywhere but the school he played for.
Maybe it's true that all of Harbaugh's former associates are biased towards Harbaugh, wherever he is.
Is that unfair?

I just don't understand, everything seems to be on the up and up.

PF seems to be obsessed with UM/Harbaugh lately, and I love it. He really comes off as a squirmy whiner in this one...he starts by saying it's not illegal then goes on to use the word "cheating" multiple times. Nothing will make me happier than watching his pencil neck come up with excuses when we steamroll an SEC team in the playoffs.

Anything that Harbaugh does that bothers Finebaum is perfect. There is no way anyone can take this guy serious. He looks to much like a tree jumper to me.

Would be simple. For all those crying foul on this, give them a hypothetical. There's a coach available, and he wants to come to your school to help out. Just be an analyst. He wants to evaluate game film and scout opponents. He spent 3 years in college coaching QBs and WRs at a P5 school. Then spent 9 years coaching QBs and WRs in the NFL. Then he spent a year in the NFL as an OC, before returning to college to be an OC where he also was the interim head coach at a P5 school. You turn him down because he happens to have a kid who is a high school football player? Who the coach is associated with shouldn't matter. If the guy is qualified, he's qualified. It's not like Harbaugh is offering positions to Joe Schmo working night shift at the GM plant.

I don't think there is a cap on how many administrative analysts a program has. OSU's new linebackers coach spent last year as a analyst not part of the coaching staff. They probably knew this would be flickles last year. So I take it if Sparty did something similar those here wouldn't have a problem with it.

Likes to develop football players as well as coaches. He is not unaware that his coaching tree is growing and might want to expand that legacy by finding some gems and giving them an opportunity at one of the highest profile football programs in the country. It's worked out pretty well so far.

I don't see anything wrong with what Harbaugh is doing. Until they come up with NCAA vs Harbaugh rule (cause the SEC are whining) 2.1 that Harbaugh can't hire parent os students being recruited, than its legal my friend!

People got to stop crying over this. There's no rule being broken! And the NCAA has got to stop catering to all these teams that don't think outside the box.

Jim Harbaugh spots talent and uses it to make his team better, it is what great leaders do. I am sure if his son decides to go somewhere else for college, Jim woulld not thow Mr. Johnson to the curb.

He hired a qualified person for the job, that can help is team win a national championship and become good representatives for the University of Michigan. This is what that dickhead is afraid off.

This guy needs to go away.  ESPN has parted ways with many employees lately, he should be the next to go.  He is like that old uncle that sits in the corner at your Christmas gatherings that cannot shut up and has worthless comments coming out of his mouth every 10 seconds.

(which doesn't really need defending): Gwen Bush and Chris Partridge.

Gwen Bush was the mother of an incomming senior transfer, whose hiring looked like a cheesy way to convince him to come.

Years later, Gwen Bush is KILLING it as "Team Mom," helping to take care of the team and talk with the parents of potential recruits.

Chris Partridge was hired (if you believe the press) just because of his ties to Jabrill, Rashan Gary, and the Paramus program. Oddly enough, the Linebacker corps played much, much better in his first year, while he was very instrumental in recruting players who aren't from New Jersey.

Maybe, just maybe, Jim Harbaugh wouldn't burn an open position on someone just because their son is a good recriut.

In fact, if I had to guess, I would say that Harbaugh was looking into his son and said, "Holy hell, how is that guy a high school coach? He should be a college coach somewhere." And then, you know, hired him.
