FCC: OSU and UM fans hate robocalls.

This is not meant to be a political post. I just thought it was funny that the FCC chairman, when discussing how robocalls can now be blocked automatically by cell phone carriers, referenced that even OSU and U of M fans can agree on something.

"'There is one thing in our country today that unites Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, socialists and libertarians, vegetarians and carnivores, Ohio State and Michigan fans: It is that they are sick and tired of being bombarded by unwanted robocalls,' said [FCC Chairman Ajit] Pai. 'My message to the American people today is simple. We hear you, and we are on your side.'"

My own message is also simple: OSU still sucks. Go Blue!

LOL!!!  That's funny, right there!

Alas, it's probably the only thing that Ajit Pai will ever do for the benefit of consumers...

Fuck Ajit Pai

But robo calls need to go. Get like 2 to 3 calls a day and they are using my number to robo call others.

As an FCC employee, I can assure you we all hate robocalls.  Pai is harder to hate — his policies are disappointing at best, but he’s a genuinely nice guy, and I’m glad he runs the agency as opposed to many other potential options (who would have had at least as bad policies).

But I’ve been in a meeting where Pai’s deputy got a robocall on his FCC phone, so believe me, we’re aware.  The really fun thing a couple of months ago is when we got thousands of robocalls one morning that spoofed an internal FCC number.  I was a little disappointed that John Oliver didn’t take credit for that stunt — it was a good one!

I honestly don’t think most people understand what a huge issue this is.  Not trying to slam the previous poster stating that he is so nice it’s hard not to like him, but liking someone who doesn’t support net neutrality is not something I can comprehend.

I get that, but Pai values the FCC as an institution, and as en employee of said agency who also values it, I appreciate that.  There were many potential choices for his position who would have taken the same hatchet to net neutrality, while also at the same time destroying the agency’s long-term viability, making it more difficult to fix anything he does break.  And although that sounds like small praise, it does matter.  Probably 90% of the work of the agency is pretty non-controversial, yet at the same time very important.  It’s very easy for me to imagine someone who made life so miserable here that it caused an exodus inhibiting us to do all the other work that matters too.

As for net neutrality, hopefully the Courts fix it.  That said, this is ultimately something that is Congress’ fault.  Some of the earlier rules were good, but the Courts ruled that we didn’t have the authority from Congress to craft those rules.  That meant that we had to go the Title II route, which created much greater pushback from the industry.  And then the next Dem will probably reinstate the Wheeler rules, which have been upheld in the Courts, and it will yo-yo back and forth between the two options.

Look, I can't stand Ajit Pai's policies but it is bit hyperbolic to use the word "rights". I don't have a "right" to telecommunications or pretty much anything under the purview of the FCC. With that said, even when the FCC under Pai does something sensible like regulate robocalls they then allow the companies to charge us for blocking the calls (that they should be blocking anyway). The real problem is that Congress won't enact legislation rather than relying upon the whims of whichever party controls the FCC.

I would be very surprised if charges appeared for a robocall blocking service as a result of this. Pai’s language yesterday talked about how this will save the carriers money as their networks won’t be as tied up by robocalls (which is true).  But that language hints to me that the industry made hat argument to them, and promised they wouldn’t charge for this, and now he’s parroting their point partly to remind them to not go back on their word.

This isn’t an issue I worked on at all, so I don’t know for sure, but having been involved in enough other proceedings over the years where similar things happened, that’s what this sounded like to me.

good thing the discussion wasn't about hygiene or marrying close relatives (called 'line breeding' in agricultural and sporting dog circles).

There is one thing in our country today that unites Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, socialists and libertarians, vegetarians and carnivores, Ohio State and Michigan fans: Ajit Pai is the fucking worst. He is like the Martin Shkreli of the internet world

Love the robocalls that spoof local numbers to trick you into answering the phone.

Lately I've received several voicemails for some sort of medical device (back brace or something), two long messages entirely in Mandarin, and several outright scam calls (you owe the IRS money, the police are coming to get you, I know you're fucking my wife, etc).

Once in a while, I'll answer one and fuck with the other person on the line.

I even managed to get some poor dude, after he tried to tell me he desperately needed access to my Microsoft account, to hang up the other day with "County Morgue - Curbside Pickup. Can I help you?"

I'd read about this one, and actually tried it once on a "Microsoft Security" caller:

In a hoarse whisper: "I'm hiding in the closet ... I can't speak up or he'll hear me ... Oh my God, there's blood everywhere ... please send help ... AAAHHHH!"

The "click" from the other end was so satisfying.

Tip:  If you don't mind changing your phone number, change it to an area code nowhere near where you live and that you have no association with.  That way if you ever get a call from this area code, you'll know it's a telemarketer/robo-call and just ignore it.  (I do this and 90% of the robocalls I get are from this area code I ignore.)

Also, if/when the ability becomes widespread to block entire area codes from calling your phone, bingo you're really in buisness!  BTW - If anyone knows how to do this now, please do tell!  Every time I look into it I'm told its not possible, which I call BS.  I'm sure someone could write an app to do it.

So, this is actually how I know to ignore most of these calls.  Not intentionally, though.  I lived in a different state when I first got my phone and haven't changed my phone number in 15 years so my "local" area code showing up in my caller ID is a dead giveaway.
