Favorite College Football Team Map by County

Submitted by RowoneEndzone on

WSJ does it again with this cool map of favorite college football team by county.  I wish they would have made it interactive so we could mine down and look at the data from each county.

It's sort of weird to see that they only included top 25 teams.  I was curious to see how the UM vs MSU breakdown plays out, and was surprised to see the entire state of Michigan solid yellow... or maize, or whatever it is.

There must be large populations of morons in Arizona and Nevada. How the hell is there that much gray there? And half of Illinois... and West Virginia... and Pennsylvania. Jesus we need to do something about this infestation.

EDIT: Oh, and Northwestern, your counties belong to us!

Hmmmm...a little suspect. So, the entire northeast is filled with Florida fans and a smattering of Texas (or Oregon State). Not so sure there is a whole lot of value in this.

keep in mind this only tracks the Top 25, so teams like Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College, U Conn and the Ivies are excluded. Florida might be 3rd or 4th on those peoples' lists but because there's not a Top 25 team in the northeast, Florda gets the nod.

Its also based off of facebook likes, which I mean like come on.  They did a similar map during the ncaa tourny last year tracking who people were switching to as the tourny narrowed down, it was pretty cool to look at.

Facebook likes?  God, how scientific.  I didn't "like" Michigan football until recently since I'm not a big facebooker, and I would guess most of my friends and family who are all big Michigan fans don't like it on facebook.  Super lame.

It looks like Northwestern is no one's favorite team.

Would be interesting to see the actual breakdown of Michigan with all the schools though. MSU is definitely heavy in the Muskegon/Pentwater area for some reason.

I'm in a section of VA that appears to go for Florida? Can't think of ever meeting a Florida fan here or seeing anything Florida related. It's all VTech and WVU fans followed by a distant Tennessee contingent. With the size of the county I'm a little surprised that me/mine alone wouldn't have beat out Florida. ... I even know a few Alabama, South Carolina and UVA fans... A single Illinois fan... Not so much as a hint of Florida.

Looks like there are a bunch of wanna be buckeye fans out west, in West Virginia, and in New York.

The whole "only top 25" thing really skews this data. For instance, if Michigan and Spartys positions were reversed (UM out of the top 25, Sparty in), the state would probably be entirely green. The only relevent state I can see is florida, which shows that the Gators' have pistol whipped the Seminoles in terms of fanbase.

in northern California. that being said they probably don't realize thousands of Buckeye fans liked the Michigan page to talk trash. its an inaccurate way to gauge things. michigans page is flooded with trash talking osu, MSU and other fans.

The California results are interesting, lots of love for UCLA over USC statewide even though SoCal itself seems to be Trojan territory. I would assume that if Cal were included the map would look differently but I'm surprised more people didn't pick Stanford.

Those NorCal counties all went Oregon, not UCLA. I think that if all schools were included most of them would have gone for Cal except for the Fresno area which would have gone for Fresno State.

I'm not surprised that Stanford doesn't have a big following. Their fanbase is basically restricted to their students and alums, and the undergrad population there is not that big and largely comes from out of state. Their alumni base is not only much smaller than Cal's, I would guess that it is much more dispersed across the country.

Beer!

1. North Dakota
> Per capita consumption: 45.8 gallons
> Total consumption: 753,000 barrels (7th lowest)
> Pct. binge drinkers: 23.8% (2nd highest)
> Number of breweries: 4 (2nd lowest)

No state consumed more beer per resident of legal drinking age in 2012 than North Dakota. This is despite the fact that the beer industry is not very large in the state. Just four breweries were operating within the state lines as of 2012, fewer than any other state except for Mississippi. The beer industry comprised just 1.1% of North Dakota’s GDP in 2012, among the bottom third of all states. The percentage of binge drinkers in the state was 23.8% as of 2011, higher than any other state except for Wisconsin.

I see hope to get more Maize in North Dakota next year......

I love beer......I love the Wolverines.

You love beer.....you love the Wolverines.

They love beer.........

They took a cool idea and made it stupid.

Why does it only include Top 25 teams? That doesn't mean anything. So if Michigan was out of the top 25...would our whole state be grey? Silly.

All they had to do was include all teams and make it interactive where if you clicked on a county, it would tell you what school that county voted for. You'd have to do this to avoid confusion of all the colors you'd have. I'd love to see how loyal some of the small states are with their shitty teams. That means more than Oregon being the only school anyone west of the Rockies cares about.

They should also include high school teams and break it down by home owners associations.  I want to be able to click on every house in the country and find out who their favorite JV cross country runner is.

And why couldn't they just email the map to me and then call my cell to make sure I received the email and to answer any questions I might have about anything?

The breakdown of Florida b/w Florida and FSU is interesting, I thought FSU would have a bit more.

Seems like NV likes Michigan and OSU.

There are a bunch of yellow counties throughtout the midwest.

Oklahoma State with a whole county to its name. There is a also a very random country for LSU in North Dakota. I bet this is the one person who responded from that county just happened to be an LSU fan.

Louisville has nothing except in Idaho??
