Favorite Announcer Call from Last Season

Submitted by Bo Harbaugh on August 24th, 2022 at 8:36 PM

Last year’s OSU game had so many great moments and was cathartic for so many of us in the BPONE.  I know Gus Johnson gets a lot of hate for his histrionics and hyperbole upon calling a game, but let’s be honest…

When it’s your team losing it sucks, when your team is winning it’s glorious.

For me, the best/most enjoyable announcer call of last year is an absolute no brainer and will live on as an iconic moment in my household for many years to come.

“And Stroud in trouble and Stroud is sacked AGAIN!

O-JA-BO!

David Ojabo!”

As Ojabo sacked stroud and strutted the Lebron walk - was the ultimate call for me.  Someone was definitely chopping onions nearby at the time.

A close second, also from The Game, was on Haskins final TD when OSU let him walk in (even though they had already capitulated on his prior TD)

“But remember folks, Hayes, Keegan, Vastardis, Zinter, Stueber - The men up front have been incredible!”

What say you?

“I don’t care about any of that…I just want to beat Ohio State.”

Edit: for anyone who hasn't watched the youtube of the game highlights synced to the radio broadcast, it is well worth a listen!  LINK

I have to say, Gus Johnson's exuberance annoyed me for quite a while, but its warmed up to me a little bit. Granted, it helps when your team is on the positive end of those calls, but I can't help but admire his true passion for the game.

Even though the game was a loss, another favorite of mine was his call on Anthony's 93 TD catch.

Ninety-three-yards-like-THAT!! WOOOO!!!

I know I'm biased, but I can't say I would've reacted any differently if I was making that call too.

A lot of people seem to find Gus annoying but I love when he calls games. Football is fun and exciting, I don't want my commentators to sound like we're watching golf. I love the energy, it feels more natural to a football game to me. The players are psyched, the fans are psyched, everyone's yelling and cheering, why would the announcers be any different?

This right here. Joel Klatt is super informative when announcing. When big plays happen Gus is there to make a statement. That’s really the only guys I will listen to commentator wise. I’m not sure why there is so much hate on Gus. Maybe cause UM has rarely been on the receiving side of his calls?

Even though it wasn't a touchdown... it was close enough to score on the next play.

Cornelius Johnson sliding into the end zone, in the snow, hanging on to the football for dear life.

My personal favorite is Klatt's "WHAT are we talkin' about here?!?" after Edwards' one-handed grab in full stride against OSU.

Although I admit that O-JA-BO is the probably the most memorable. I also liked "Guess who?! Aiden Hutchinson."

I love that I'll be able to hear and recognize these quotes from such a memorable season for at least a few years. Every one of these posted so far I can hear in my head when I read them because I've watched the highlights so many times.

We were driving past Ann Arbor in the snow when that game was on. I was in radio silence mode. My wife was mostly. She received word before we got back to Louisville that UM won. She didn't tip me off.

As I watched the game, there were so many good feels. My favorites were the first touchdowns of each half. Trying to recall, I think I believed after they were up two scores, but felt pretty good after All escorted Haskins in.

Man that was a good game.

Ojabo was the highlight, but I also enjoyed all 5 Haskins TD calls against OSU.

Also, special mention should go to the first long Corum TD run against Washington where he blew through the line and the announcer said "Goodbye".  That was a lot of fun.

Came here to post this, too! The best part for me was the rapid escalation at the beginning after this was clearly not going to be a humdrum play:

(Gus and Joel discussing Oklahoma getting trounced in a title game)

Gus: They’ll throw it out to EdwardsEDWARDS FIRES HE’S GOT A WIDE OPEN MAN!

(What Bleed 4 Blue said)

Seventy five yards! Josh Gattis pulls a rrrabit out of his hat!

My YouTube tv dvr glitched at the O-JA-BO! Moment. I was at the game, so it took me a long time to get what people were talking about. On my dvr I just get a blip to the aftermath of the play.No commentary So  On big ten 60 replay I hear the call and it’s such a coup d etat moment of the game. But that’s ok because I got “you got to pump it up!” Live and in person, and that will live in my memory forever

Nobody has mentioned the call on Erik All's TD against Penn State.  McDonough has his moments and I liked that call cause he recognized it was a TD right away and ramped the call from start to finish:

"Lots of running room down the sideline!  Erik All the tight end!  Will they catch him....NOOOO!"

And not a call specifically but Joel Klatt ripping on the piss poor officiating in the MSU game was awesome.  We've all kind of forgotten about the strip sack that was called back on a ridiculous review.  I swear the officiating changed after that game and Klatt and Fox might have played a part.

I clicked on this thread to specifically mention this call, but glad to see it's already been mentioned.  It wasn't my favorite call of the year, but it's definitely up there.  This was such a huge play in the season and Sean McDonough is always excellent in the big moments of a big game.
