Father's Day Friday BBQ and Beverage Thread

Mates,

The summer is here and the time is right for dancing in the streets.  What is in your cup and/or on your BBQ?

Also, for the dads amongst us, do you have any special plans this weekend?

Hope you are all well,

XM

Drinking diet mountain dew

Smoking some biscotti, gelatti, and sour og

Perhaps dipping into the gummies.

I tore my rotator cuff at work about a month ago so I've been kind of useless lately.

Find out next week if I'll require surgery.

Best of luck with your surgery and rehab. Rotator-cuff surgery in my 60s wasn’t too bad for me, especially because (a) I was under general anesthesia throughout the surgery after they’d told me that it’d be only local anesthesia and (b) it was in my non-throwing shoulder. The worst part was the rehab that took about a year before I was getting full extension back. I gained greater respect for physical therapists and for those much younger athletes who’ve gone through that process.

My physical therapist wondered why the surgeon hadn’t recommended “pre-hab” to strengthen the shoulder, neck and arm muscles before surgery. There are lots of videos on YouTube that demonstrate pre-surgery exercises for shoulder surgery.

Just water. Haven't had a drink since Memorial Day. I don't know why exactly.

Dinner was nice, though, pork chops with strawberry glaze, paired with a spinach, goat cheese, strawberry salad.

Sunday is supposed to be a surprise, although I know brunch is involved somehow.

Drinking a local Calgary brew Summer Saturation by Cabin Brewing.

No plans that I'm aware of for Father's Day. Dunno if the wife even realizes with how busy she is and I have no plans to tell her so I can give her a ton of shit if she doesn't. My mother flies in from Indiana on Wed so we'll mostly be trying to make the house not look like the disaster our 6 and 3 year olds turn it into constantly.

Wanted to play some golf but instead opted to schedule some time with my old man for a cigar and a beer or two around a campfire at his place.  He's 75 and doing great but making sure to carve out time. Happy Father's Day to all the mgoDads. Keep on keeping on my friends. As always,  Go Blue.

Our younger brethren won't remember when craft beers didn't exist, but there was a time where the only exotic brew available was an import-and usually at a cost.

After getting a few paychecks and establishing myself with a family of my own, my dad was coming in to town. I decided I'd have some beer in the fridge to offer him. I'd been to a nice tavern with some imports (might have been the Brickskeller in DC back in the day) and I'd had some Theakston's Old Peculiar that I thought was good, and different. I found a six pack with no small effort and at some expense for my meager bank account but I was ready for my dad's visit.

I proudly offered him a beer and after a sip or two he said, "I've had something like this before...Schlitz malt liquor."

It's pulled pork night here in WA.

I'm not sure yet about Sunday, but it will involve grilling and some moderate drinking.  Unfortunately, my father passed away and I have to spend some time on arrangements this weekend.  Having to do some of that on Father's Day is a bit daunting.

Went out to dinner with the wife - sat outside for a nice Mexican meal.  Came home and opened a bottle of Cab, lit a cigar, and I’m sitting outside listening to Pink Floyd.  “Relaxing” is quite the understatement after two 18 hour days of travel for work.

Our oldest son and his wife are taking me out for Fathers Day.  Nice tradition they started!  Going out with the rest of the family later in the week when out oldest daughter gets back in town (visiting her father-in-law).

Finally relaxing with some Vodka Iced tea. Spent the day cleaning up tornado damage at my mothers house. An EF2 hit her neighborhood (Point Place, Ohio) on Thursday night. Thankfully she is okay and doesn't have much damage but others in the area weren't so lucky. So much devastation and damage.

This is going to be the Lost Summer. I'll dance in August (hopefully) or September.

We've got a kitchen and home remodel. Status: paused at a messy point.

We've got a new home purchase for younger child, need to move his stuff from original homestead *and* NYC shoebox (they call this closet an apartment, really?) to his new home - post closing at month end. But wait, there's more ...

We've got the older child's apartment newly demoed post a severe roof leak and plumbing error in upstairs neighbor's apartment. Unit needs to be redone, completely. In my spare time.

In my cup tonight? Milk with a side of fig newtons after a light sandwich dinner.

Tomorrow is brunch with the family listening to everyone tell me about their lives. Sunday is my day to be thanked for repeatedly "being there" for them for more than 3 decades. I'm going to sit in the backseat with my bride as my two sons chauffeur us around to meals, etc.. My wallet and car keys stay home all weekend.

YES ! Without fathers, life would be a much harder and miserable place. We rock!

Take a bow, Dads!

Ain't that the truth! I was up north and my wife had some minor yard item to be unhooked and could not do it without...ahem...a man around and she called my backup "Dad" the neighbor whose wife promptly sent him over like someone needed life support. If he is not around the wife then goes to neighbor "Dad" on other side of our house and he saves the day. Been neighbors and friends since 1995 with both families but without the three of us "Dads" entropy wins.

My father is currently in the cardiac ICU at Munson in TC. I have spent the last few days with him. He and I have pretty much always had an OK relationship, but bordering on…..challenging. I love my dad. All that is good in me has come from him. We were supposed to get together on Sunday for a fun Father’s Day. Not going to happen since he is in the hospital. Cherish your dads. They always try hard, even if they don’t have all of the answers. I love mine dearly and know he will recover.

Fun Bruce story. He likes to drink whiskey. Cheap whiskey. I once was with him at a convenience store and he needed a new bottle. The woman behind the counter put some serious cheap shit on the counter. He took one look and said, “I know you have something cheaper.”  She put it back, plucked something from the bottom shelf, dusted it off, and offered it to him. His comment:”Now that’s more like it”. It was $9 for a fifth. Truly rock gut shit. That’s my dad.

Goin with some Spanish flavor for Father’s Day.
Got a few racks of Iberico pork ribs going on the smoker Sunday.  Pan Con Tomate for the app and Patatas Bravas on the side.
Not sure yet for the drink so any suggestions appreciated.

My wife's birthday is this weekend, so we went to a local farm/kitchen/brewery for dinner with all the hoodlums. I had mac n cheese with pulled pork. Never disappoints. I'm currently enjoying a glass of bourbon and rocking my 2 week old back to sleep. For Sunday? Idk of any plans. I hope my 4 year old makes some sort of awesome plan like eat ice cream and go fishing (actually, pretty likely plan of events)

Not a human dad (but I have my dog). I’ll be flying back from Hawaii all day on Sunday. It’s been an amazing 9 days of spending time with my brother hiking, snorkeling, body boarding, beach naps, and chillin with morning coffee and evening cocktails from his porch overlooking Kaneohe bay.

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads!

Going to go hang out with my 89-year-old Dad on Sunday. Not sure how many more of these we'll get, so I'm moving in with my parents soon to help them maintain their quality of life and perhaps increase their quantity at the same time. Contemplating barbecuing either chicken or ribs at home and finishing them in the oven at their place--they don't have a grill nor a good spot for one at their condo--as my dad loves food that he can pick up and nibble off a bone. Will keep the phone handy as I expect calls from my two offspring, but they are both far away and I won't get to see either until later in the summer when they come to help me pack and move.

Tonight's undermotivated solo repast was boxed mac 'n' cheese washed down with some UPAs from Upper Hand. Tomorrow I plan to go to the local farmers market and Meijer, then come home and work on packing boxes of books to go into storage for a year or few.

Orange Jarritos in my cup. Wifey made some potstickers. I ate them with cole slaw. That’s fusion cuisine in my household.

My niece was finally taken off the waitlist and accepted by UofM. She’s visiting Ann Arbor today and if all goes well she’ll change from UofM (Maryland) to UofM (Michigan). That would make 3 for 3 for my nieces and UofM.

Meanwhile, wifey and I are picking up the boy from UCR tomorrow just in time for Father’s Day.

Nothing to drink, only an occasional beer anymore.  Sunday I'm not sure if I'll smoke a small brisket, or go with poor mans brisket using the Mississippi Sliders recipe from MGoBBQ.  Might take the kid fishing...

A couple brews at the Great Turtle Brewery on Mackinac Island.....

Spend a day at camp today with my lovely bride and oldest granddaughter (she's 4)...

Will spend a few minutes at my pop's grave tomorrow and then head back to PA.  (might take a sip of Wild Turkey Father and Son)

My first Father's Day without my pops alive to thank for all that he's done for me, taught me and such.  Not sure how the day will go, but I'm pretty sure it won't be easy.

Picking up my Dad from Assisted Living nearby tomorrow and bringing him over to my house for mini cupcake sized meatloafs and brats and to watch the US Open. Trying to appreciate how much he inspired the world around my family and the scale which is daunting. Lucky to still be able to share time with him.

Probably have my Delirium Tremens Belgian beer today on the porch and had the Rochefort 8 and 10 Belgians yesterday on the porch. Perfect weather this summer after finally getting the rain that allowed a bonfire in TC this week. Brothers' family in state from Austin, TX for the week and are enjoying TC and coming back down again for a visit with my Dad and I before driving back. Hadn't seen them in 4+ years.

My wife works for the schools so is off for the summer and that means I get pampered more...yesss! Most of my major tasks are complete and only minor things like maintenance painting at my leisure are on the docket so I can finally start figuring out what to do in retirement.

Sorry for all the blathering but you asked.

My mom delivered me to this male domain of mine and my Dad then shaped the clay. Might have made only an ashtray but one full of appreciation. He is the last one left with all the Uncles now gone. An end of an era contextually.

My brother (14 years junior) does touch base with me like he does with my Dad and yet I can still be what passes for cool amongst us. A day tomorrow to state..."looking back"...!

Roasted a pork loin with a new Duglah 7 pot chili powder rub and holy hell is this delicious. Might grill up some steak this evening, and I’ve got some hefty cellar aged beers (World Wide Stout, Samichlaus, Sue Smoked porter) brought up to wash it all down.
