Ohio State, Michigan to play outdoor hockey game at FirstEnergy Stadium | Crain's Cleveland Business

Just announced.  February 18th, 2023 Michigan will face OSU at First Energy Stadium here in Cleveland.  I got a text from my Browns ticket rep about an hour ago and for anyone interested you can rent a 20 person suite from $3,500 to $4,500 and they only need a $1,000 deposit to secure it for you.

I'll be there for sure with a bunch of my OSU friends but not in one of those.

Went to the 2012 outdoor game against OSU at the Indians stadium with a classmate. Pretty sure we sat in the parents' section instead of our actual seats. Met Chris Brown's parents, they were cool and the flasks were plentiful...

Huh, interesting. It has been a few years since Michigan has played in an outdoor game. Cleveland, once again, seems a bit out of left field, but more power to anyone who can make it. I'm sure it will be fun.

The upside here is that losing a game at the Schott is no great loss for anyone.

Why do you have OSU friends, OP? Even better, how does that even work?

(Note: These are unserious questions - one of the kindest people I have known in my many years at a public utility was an OSU fan. I still think it was all a front somehow, but whatever. He retired some time ago.)

Are we doing True Confessions right now?

One of my best friends is an OSU alum. I'm ashamed of it, but he's a good guy. He also has a lot of tools which I love to borrow, is super handy, and is generous with his beer.

We figure we'll be those guys in 40 years sitting on the porch of the senior home arguing about The Game while refilling each other's beers (or cups of Ensure).

I'm in the same boat.  One of my college roommates (we went to a D3 school) is a big OSU fan, but also very rational somehow.  16 years later we still hang out often and will for years to come.  2006 was the first year we watched The Game together.  Finally, after 15 years of hearing is gloating, I was able to return the favor last year.  42-27!

EDIT: yeah there was the Fickell game, but that didn't really move the needle much given how bad OSU was that year.

He's actually one of my best friends.  He has a cottage on Middle Bass Island near mine and his wife and mine are great friends too.   Every year OSU plays at Michigan he hosts a huge watch party (rents out a VA hall) and I go to take the good-natured ribbing.  FWIW he goes to every OSU away game but ours because he's convinced that Michigan fans treat OSU fans the same way up in AA as we get treated in Columbus and he wants no part of that.

We've gone to the last three Michigan/OSU basketball games together (both in AA & Columbus) and were planning on going to the Regionals this year if OSU hadnt shit the bed and lost before we could beat them.  He's a really good guy and HUGE OSU fan and we get along great.

FWIW at one of his M/OSU watch parties one of the other guests got drunk and started to get a bit abusive verbally.  Nothing I hadnt heard before but he immediately grabbed the guy and told him to shut up or leave the party.

So they're not all bad.  Truth be told 99% of the alumni of OSU are just fine.  The mouth-breathers down here who cause problems couldn't find Columbus on a map, much less ever take a class there.

When I joined the Army, my only taste of Buckeyes were their fans at the game in Ann Arbor. So naturally I assumed everyone from Ohio was a drunk, stupid jerk.

Shock to my system: the Ohio folks were the nicest among my fellow MPs. Best desk sergeant. Best cop, who's still my friend.

And now my Columbus friend whose family's had had season tickets since the 50s! And a ridiculously nice guy. And smart! (To be fair, his degree is from THE Ohio University.)

Was at The Big Chill at The Big House vs Sparty.  Football stadiums are an awful venue for a hockey game.  Blowing them out and  the stealth bomber flyover were super cool however.

I was at the 2012 game also, had quite a fun time albeit a cold one.  I would go back for this just so I could meet up with friends in the area.  I'm not sold on the venue; I think the baseball stadium would be better.  Book your room now at the Arcade, you'll be right in the thick of things.

I went to The Frozen Diamond Faceoff 2012 in Cleveland. Saw a very drunk OSU fan faceplant into a snowbank during the game. He got up, face half covered in snow and said, "whoa."

I'm very hesitant to go to these outdoor games imagining that fans can't really see the plays from the stands. BUT, watching a Michigan Ohio game outside in February sounds like an unforgettable experience. For those who have been to previous outdoor games, is the "experience" worth the challenges of watching the game from the stands?

Thanks!
