Exit Tyran Steward, the Professor Who Helped Deliver Rashan Gary

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Farewell to Dr. Tyran Steward, the history professor who is greatly responsible for the fact that Rashan Gary will be wearing a winged helmet this year. For the past couple years, Steward has been the Assistant Director of Football Operations and Player Engagement at U-M, working on connecting the players with the community. Per Facebook, he's taken a job writing and researching at Carleton College in Minnesota.

You know Dr. Tyran Steward as:

  • Rashan Gary's favorite professor, and the guy who helped bring him here. When Gary was being recruited, he met with Steward (who was then a history professor), and Gary's mom was so blown away that she wanted Rashan to enroll on the spot.
  • The professor who was one of the presenters during the first "Signing of the Stars." (And at the time, you were probably thinking, "Who is that guy and why did Harbaugh ask him to be here?" Now you know. Rashan Gary is why.)
  • As a historian, he's the world's foremost authority on Willis Ward, and he was interviewed prominently in the documentary "Black and Blue." Along with the guys who made "Black and Blue" Steward is greatly responsible for the Willis Ward story coming to the forefront after being buried for decades.

So best of luck at Carleton College, Dr. Steward. Thank you for telling the story of one great Wolverine (Willis Ward) and thank you for helping bring another great Wolverine to town. You will always be Professor Needs-a-Raise on this campus, good sir.

Crap! Always sucks to lose someone like that. best of luck to him in the future. Hopefully we can find someone of the same caliber to fill the role going forward.

As is the town it’s in, Northfield, Minnesota. Having been there for my wife’s class reunion, I can say it reminds me very little of either Michigan or Ann Arbor. Also, I think I’m going to ban our annual donation to Carleton this year on account of this. Careful who you hire, Carleton!

As my name implies...I reside in Northfield. Moved here after graduation. Great little town. Two colleges, St. Olaf and Carlton. Northfield's claim to fame is kicking some Jesse James and Cole Younger ass, even have a yearly celebration. "Defeat of Jesse James Days! Good luck and welcome to town Prof!

I have met with Tyran 4 or 5 times in his tenure while at the athletic department. I believe he parted ways with the AD about a year ago and was taking his time finding a new position. His wife had a job in A2 and had 2 young children in school here that made leaving for a new job something he was taking his time deciding on. Good man and a wonderful family who will be missed.

Since it's a Division III school, Steward can make this move, lecture immediately and still have two years of pedagogy remaining. Plus, all the campus buildings have their own doorman. Very convenient.
