ESPN: Urban Meyer criticizes NCAA policy

Submitted by umaz1 on

Didn't see this in the Urban Meyer photo rant thread.

I thought this article was hillarious.  It talks about Meyer at the Sound Mind Sound Body Academy, and how he thinks its unfair that high school kids have to pay to travel and visit Universities. (emphasis mine)

"It is one of the problems I have now with collegiate athletics. It's almost anti-student-athlete where they have to come to us for camp," Meyer said. "How many kids can afford to fly or drive that far?

The article makes it seem that Urban is seeing how difficult it is to get his Florida kids up to Ohio to visit.  I dont recall him ever having this complaint when he was at Florida, though honestly I didn't follow him that closely then.

I also thought this excerpt was interesting:

When Meyer first heard about the camp, he actually went to his compliance office at Ohio State because he couldn't believe it was allowed under NCAA rules. Compliance told him it was, so he showed up along with the majority of his coaching staff.

Makes it seem as though he was going to try and call the NCAA on Hoke and Co, but then decided to join instead and take advantage of seeing some of these kids in person.

Thoughts?

The compliance portion is pretty funny.  I will say with their track record lately though, I would have done that same thing, reaching out to compliance.

I think you do have a point with the Florida recruit thoughts.  I have to believe with the good guys getting a decent pick of the litter out of that state, and him figureing the Florida crew will just run to him, there is real concern on his end, and I can see him grasping at straws for a quick fix.....such as paid travel, etc...

with these quotes/excerpts.  I'm not saying that schools paying for camp travel is the solution, but I think he makes a good point about kids and their parents having to fork over tons of dough to travel to camp.  I know my parents couldn't have afforded that when I was a kid.

They can just pay for kids to come on an official visit. He just has to wait till high school classes start up in the fall. Obviously he wants to see them up on campus earlier than that but its not like he can't get a kid to campus at all because the kid doesn't have enough money

Section 13.7.1 of the NCAA Division I Handbook:

"A prospective student-athlete may visit a member institution’s campus at his or
her own expense an unlimited number of times. A prospective student-athlete may make unofficial visits before his or her senior year in high school."

So, Meyer would pretty much have to lobby for a rule change here. However, camps such as SMSB are a great outreach  for local talent and can serve to bring the school closer to them in a sense, but these camps are supposed to be mostly instructional in nature, if I am not mistaken, as they should be. I do understand his point, however - none of this is cheap and not everyone can exactly haul off and go to Ann Arbor or Columbus or wherever on a whim. That being said, the rule on five official visits is pretty fair, I think, but Meyer really does raise a valid concern here.

As for the second point, later in Section 13, the rules regarding camps and clinics, both institutional and privately, are pretty explicit - these things are completely acceptable provided they are not actively  used to scout or recruit (i.e., formal presentations or distribution of material or really anything that looks like an active attempt).

do we really have to stretch so far to try and make him look like a fool? It's been like 11Warriors today. Make fun of him for sleeping with a co-ed or something, you don't have to reach like this.

But I agree with Urb. It shouldn't be a burden on kids to be recruited. If schools are interested, they should be allowed to pay to have a kid on campus in time to be in the running (we have seen first hand how spots can fill before official visits). Even it helps OSU, I can't be against Meyer saying something that transfers financial burden from highschoolers and their families to the schools.

Schools do reimburse for official visits. So, I guess my thoughts would be they should be able to extend the period backwards to include the summer before senior year. That way, recruits don't have issues with timing and such.

HOWEVER, the first problem with this is that the coaches typically get some time off in the summer and that would be gone now. Also, if you just extend the period for official visits back you run the risk of just pushing commitments back earlier and unofficial visits back earlier, which would accomplish nothing possitive. So, it could go both ways, either good or bad. But I'm inclined to think including the summer (or a part of the summer) as a time when official visits can be taken would be a good thing

pt. 2 sounds like he's trying to portray himself as Mr. Compliance. I don't blame him with all eyes on Columbus after the Tressel fiasco

Recruiting has become a vastly different animal in even the last 5 years wtih the proliferation of social media and recruiting websites, blogs, etc.  Everyone wants to know why players from the west coast are not out to Michigan earlier to do unofficial visits (Cravens, Vanderdoes, etc) but for many is it just not financially an option.

I think that a fair alternative would be to allow recruits to take up to 10 visits to the school(s) of their own choice after they begin their junior years in HS.  This would allow for attending camps and an official or even two to the same school.  As the schools would be funding this, it is up to them to budget for and fund the visits and make the determinations on how serious the mutual process is.

Many coaches want kids to camp to evaluate and get to know the players and vise versa.  As the recruiting budgets from ESPN yesterday shows, schools already self-select their level of funding currently, and this would most likely not really increase the costs significantly as coaches are already visiting many of these recruits multiple times across the country to try to sell them on an unseen product.

Just my two cents.

poor urban cant understand why michigan is whipping his butt in recruiting,,, hmm maybe its because they dont have child molesters taking pictures with his recruits... tough'

Seems like there's already a process in place exactly for this - official visits.

Of course that doesn't help when mom and dad want to come, too.  Nor does it address the acceleration of all aspects of recruiting, where so many kids are committing before they are even eligible to take those official visits.

And, of course every situation is different, and this may be an inappropriate sweeping generalization, but aren't you asking for problems with getting a kid from a thousand miles away when he doesn't have the means to travel back home or have his parents come and visit or see him play once in a while?  Seems like it forces the kid into a potentially lonely on-campus existence that could result in a messy transfer to a closer-to-home school later.

well if you drive then your parents get their transportation paid for. I think its just air travel that is prospect only. Also the food and lodging is free for the parents. your point remains valid though especially for a kid coming up from florida or california.

You are correct on all of the above. However I once took a visit to a particularly smarmy BIG coach who told my parents to drive because it would be covered, but never helped my parents get the gas money reimbursed. The AD never did get back to us about that. I guess he met my parents and figured we could afford it or something. Hopefully he never pulled that on a kid who couldn't.

“I’ve known Urban a long time,” Hoke said during the Sound Mind, Sound Body football camp at Southfield High School. “We’ve got a good relationship."

Hoke is high-road all the time.

Recruits notice that.  So too do parents.

Hoke is 100% class act.

WE obviously know that Urbs knows nothing about NCAA rules judging by his track record of infractions. Second, this camp has been going on so if it was not biding by the rules I think the NCAA would have caught on by now to a freaking camp. His ignorance amazes me. He is really just jealous that we have taken the top talent from Ohio and Michigan and he is left to scramble outside the region. WE ALL know Urbs does not care about the kids, he just cares about winning. #Snake#typicalOhiocoach#ClassAboveTrash#Go Blue!! ( I know you love all of those hashtags, dont lie)

If OHIO needs to provide cars to athletes so they can get to practice/class, what will Urb recommend recruits need to make it to campus from so far away?  Limousines, helicopters, private jets?  And I'm sure he'll feel it necessary to provide a nice co-ed for the trip, you know, since they might get lonely being so far away from home and all.  I mean, he needed a co-ed with all his job stress, travel, and long hours. I mean, it only makes sense that these high school boys would need one too.  What a slime ball............
