ESPN piece on JMFJ

Submitted by Avant's Hands on

For the hockey fans out there, Burnside put out a story highlighting Jack Johnson and his impact for the Blue Jackets. Not much we don't already know, but it is nice to see him be a big part of bringing a team like Columbus to the playoffs and actually competing with the Penguins.

It's especially gratifying to see him thrive there after the drivel the LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi offered up around the time of the trade.  Lombardi was complaining that Red never prepares players for the NHL:

Michigan’s players—[head coach] Red [Berenson] doesn’t coach. It’s ‘do what you want.’ He gets the best players in the country.”

Pacioretty's and JMFJ's playoff performance speaks against that position, along with many other examples of Red's former charges succeeding in the NHL.  So screw Lombardi, and here's to JMFJ's continued development with the Blue Jackets.

Isn't Jack Johnson the dude who plays the acoustic guitar and writes/sings semi-terrible songs?

Great piece. Read it on the throne today. Despite being a Columbus team, I have no misgivings about rooting for the jackets. Also, while we're on the topic, fuck Dean Lombardi and his comments.

Hearing about his little brother getting recruited is a real "I'm old" moment for me. I remember when that little rugrat was running around Yost with his little buddies back in the day. Man, JMFJ was a monster. good memories.

Man, I've seen so many posts around hockey blogs referencing how Jack Johnson is one of the most overrated defensemen in the league.  These are always coming from a hockey-stats persepective using Corsi or Fenwick numbers.

I disagree, especially since he has been on the Jackets.  I also think it was a mistake for Team USA to leave him off, since he has always showed up for international competitions.

Funny to look back at how the post-2nd period dance has evolved in the last 10 years.

I don't know if anyone was dancing before Jack's dad, but when Jack left, I know a few of the guys who would dress up did the dance for a while (Lobster guy, Count Chocula?), before the new famous Yost dance took hold probably in 09-10

Can't Turn You Loose Dance has been going on since before 09-10.

Here's a clip from 08-09 when it was at it's height and the Yost student section was a thing to behold.

That's near the end of my student-tenure and I wasn't a season ticket holder - some others a few years older than me might be able to pinpoint when the dance started, but I'd guess around 2007.

That's AWESOME.  One regret I have for my time in AA was that i only went to one hockey game when I was a student. I was all basketball and hockey never seemed to get on my radar.

When people ask me why I want the students to pack the Big House I think I'll show this video.

Must've started in 08-09 then because I definitely remember it starting and that was my first year with season tickets. Maybe it started in late 07-08...may have been birthed on a St Pattys day game

Edit:

  • Oh I found myself in that video
  • Gray fleece guy loved the drum solo
  • I think John Beilein took a lot of people out of Yost

08-09 is definitely a possibility.

And your last point is certainly important.   It is extremely difficult to have season tix for both sports.  I choose basketball in my time (and thanks to JB I got to close out undergrad with a road trip to KC for our first tourney in a decade) and it was difficult to get to any hockey games and not have my grades suffer.
