Another quietly renamed job title in the Michigan Athletic Department. Recently Michigan Hockey coach Mel Pearson's job title became the "Graham Family Men's Ice Hockey Head Coach".

Ed Warinner is the latest to have his position endowed.

He is now the "Donald C. Graham Football Offensive Line Coach" according to MGoBlue.

Warinner's new title joins the list of already endowed positions-

  • Warde Manuel, Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics
  • Jim Harbaugh, J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach
  • Don Brown, Matthew and Nicole Lester Family Football Defensive Coordinator
  • Josh Gattis, Sanford Robinson Offensive Coordinator
  • Ben Herbert, Mike Gittleson Director of Strength & Conditioning
  • Juwan Howard, David and Meredith Kaplan Men's Basketball Head Coach
  • Mel Pearson, Graham Family Men's Ice Hockey Head Coach

During undergrad my friend worked for telefund, he told me that one time a guy pledged a donation, but only if they named something after him. The guy donated like $50 or something and they named the stapler in their office after him lol

Breaking news via Twitter:

"BREAKING: The Wilpon family has signed an agreement to sell the Mets to billionaire Steve Cohen. The sale is now subject to MLB approval. “I am excited to have reached an agreement with the Wilpon and Katz families to purchase the New York Mets,” Cohen said in a statement."

That means Wilpon is now sitting on a huge pot of money, and can part with some of it to help U-M offset the financial fallout of COVID-19.

This line of thinking will probably make for a future niche Brian joke in UV or something.

They say you should have a rainy day fund. Screw that. I'm saving so I can add my name to a coach. GoBlueGoWings presents Mark Rosen Head Volleyball Coach

If people want to send their money like this, good for them.

A math professor I know had retired early 2000s and his four children at the retirement ceremony had gifted 750k to the university and established professorships in both the parents' name, one for a math professor in the father's name and one for a liberal arts teacher in the mother's name, who is a poet.

I thought that was very cool. Not a bad way to leave a mark at a school.

It is unusual to give a coach a "named title," like a professor's named chair (The Tunneler Professor of Advanced Mopery Science). And encountering unusual things, we humans have a tendency to either fear or laugh.

But what's laughable about the University offering enticements to donors to give money? Enticements that cost the University nothing.

Why can't a cool donor make a name for something that isn't their own? Here's $250 grand to move the student section at Yost back behind the opponents' bench and call it the Molly McGannon Memorial Schoolhouse?
