Not that it's bad (I've driven through it plenty), there's just not much that it offers that other states don't do better. If I want rolling hills and friendly people, I'd pick South Dakota, but why settle for rolling hills when you have other states that feature national parks or shoreline?

I also enjoy ethnically diverse states for the food options. Iowa lacks in that department.

Since we're all sort of waiting around for LOIs to roll in, I'll take the bait and ask, with respect, how many local (non-chain) ethnic restaurants in the state of Iowa have you actually tried? Here in eastern Iowa we have some great local Mexican food, some of the best BBQ I've ever had (seriously, and I love BBQ and eat it a lot when I travel), and Des Moines has some great Ecuadorian food: https://mipatriadsm.com/ as well. Lots of other options that we locals appreciate and enjoy!

I'll give the Ecuadorian food a try next time. Thanks for the tip. We did have vietnamese in Des Moines and it was fine and the Chinese and Mexican we've had has been the standard sort of Americanized fare that you see most places (even here in Georgia). I've not seen things like road side jerk chicken shacks, soul/Cajun style food (a lot in the south now since Katrina) or even authentic Asian food (like seeing culantro instead of cilantro served with pho, or finding a Chinese restaurant that serves snow pea leaves or had dim sum) . That's not to say they aren't there, but just that it would have been the kind of thing you have to go out of your way to find. To be fair, Alabama has the same issue with Asian food.

More generally though, there's somewhat of a  "loss of flavor" that the extended family has seen while we've traveled the country that kind of parallels how sweet the locals prefer their iced tea.  There's just a lower tolerance for seasoning and spices the further north you travel in middle America.

Des Moines actually has a robust Hindu community and temple (those aren’t cheap to build) and a lot of good Mexican food in the eastern end of the state because of historical migration patterns. And besides that is one of the larger cities in the Midwest. I played ball in Iowa and found it to be one of the best places I’ve lived (Chicago, Brooklyn, Madison, Portland Maine). Small town life in Iowa can be dull but it’s not a godforsaken dump devoid of culture. That’s the state that beings with an “I” on the otherside of Illinois.

Totally respect your preferences MGHB but Iowa is a strong part of the Midwest and deserves some love in a non-football capacity.
