about the intro to the state column is the Draper story. He clearly gets wrong who is who in that exchange - Michigan is clearly Draper, and absolutely doesn't think about MSU in the same way that MSU fixates on Mich.

I know this was probably unintentional, but the fact you assumed the column was written by a man despite the author's name being Rachel and she pointing out in the preamble that this column has become such a staple of white guy dick-measuring is a bit ironic.

Wow, those are awful. Both. The Michigan Daily one is waaaay too biographical and too child-like in its finger-pointing, and the MSU one reads like more like a feedback letter from one editorial team to another, not meant for publication.

Both fail as anything resembling something intended to get audiences riled up for the game.

I know they're college kids, but those really were incredibly bland and petty.  And that's okay if they are funny, but when both sides are saying "no, YOU take this way too seriously, I'm for the great good of quality journalism" and that's the crux of your argument, it's just bad copy.

At least last year's (?) MSU column was funny in that it seemed to have multiple grammatical mistakes and may have been missing a paragraph or two.

This didn't feel like a "duel" at all. It felt more like a fight between two siblings, where the older sibling does his best, while the little brother pretends not to care and thus, not participate, so they don't lose again....on second thought, this makes perfect sense now.

So the staff or The State News and the student body of Michigan State don't think about Michigan at all?  That's counterintuitive.

I'll say this, though.  The Michigan Daily column was a beat-down, while The State News column was "we're the winners in what really matters" tripe without any foundation other than the editor's feelings.

I think both columns miss the mark.  They should be used to build friendly camaraderie between the schools.  The staffs of the two papers have an opportunity to set an example to their respective student bodies, but instead come off like a couple going through a bitter divorce.

Also, the suggestion that Michigan is "Ginsberg" carries with it some rather ugly stereotyping/associations that rival fans sometimes posit about Michigan.

Well, they're not wrong in that stereotype.  I mean, most of us are beat poets who write long poems about how we are "angel-headed hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night".

What's the matter with that?  Say what?

Ohhhhhhh.  That  stereotype.

...it's long past time to bury Paul Bunyan's hatchet.

Instead of squabbling over our differences, we should find ways to unite and end the cycle of hatred.  And it can start with the in-state rivalry between Michigan and MSU.  Let's instead celebrate the things we have in common - to wit, the bar none proudest moment for many Wolverines AND Spartans is being able to say they were admitted to the University of Michigan.

Santo column was sharp. Brutal. And delicious in a Devin-Bush-unhindered-to-the-QB sort of way.

Was hoping to enjoy some kind of counter-blow from Fradette, but finished her section without even a clear concept of what she was trying to convey. I don't even know if she did badly, because I'm not sure what she was trying to do.

Or maybe that was it--maybe she was trying to suck just a couple minutes away from the life of every reader who had the misfortune of reading past the Santo section.
