Don Brown's Speech at the Broyles Award Ceremony (Video)

Submitted by Night_King on

Thought you guys might enjoy this video of Coach Brown giving a speech last week at the 2016 Broyles Award Ceremony as he was a top 5 finalist for assistant of the year.

Great guy, full of energy and passion. I enjoyed hearing his story of how Harbaugh and Drevno gave up their first class seats to him and his wife so they had a better chance of making their connecting flight. Go Blue!

How the hell did Don Brown not win the Broyles Award?  Because nobody on a successful team can be good at what they do?  He only took one of the best defenses in the country and made it - visibly and statistically - MUCH better.  Had Alabama actually played a decent schedule, Brown's defense would have been #1 in everything...

I can't argue with someone who thinks Brown should win, but I'll say this in favor of Brent Venables:

Clemson lost 7 defensive players to the NFL Draft, including 4 in the first two rounds, and they still had a very good defense this year. Michigan lost some undrafted linebackers, Jarrod Wilson, Willie Henry, and Mario Ojemudia. That's about it. The stars of the defense returned for Michigan, whereas many did not for Clemson.

Points are an important metric when you're talking about games, but Clemson ran (and faced) a lot more plays than Michigan this year. They also played one more game, a conference championship game in whch their opponent scored 25+. If we're just talking about the first 12 games, that number drops to 4. (For those wanting to compare, Michigan gave up 25+ twice - to OSU and Colorado.)

He's trying.  You can allow him a corny joke without calling him out given his other contributions to the board.

On a completely unrelated note, I still can't believe I got ban hammered for calling out Pedo State - They don't deserve to have a football program let alone the joy of a B1G title and Rose Bowl.

How can you not love this guy? He obviously loves coaching and coaching at Michigan.

I love that he called out the fact that all 11 of his starters made some sort of All Big Ten (1st, 2nd or Honorable Mention) list. That's pretty incredible.

The problem with this and many other "best of..." awards (e.g. the Heisman) is that they are trying to compare between incomparable things.  What's more impressive, taking an already excellent defense from a 93 to a 97, or taking a clean slate defense back to 92, same as it was last year with 7 players who got drafted?  The question is unanswerable to everyone's satisfaction.

All that said, I'm still a little chapped that Mattison didn't win this award in 2011.  He took a Rich Rod/GERG defense with fundamentally the same personnel, and made it one of the top defenses in the country.  No disrespect to the guy from Texas who won it, but c'mon man!

Love Don Brown.  Who wouldn't want to play for him?

I didn't realize his was a Massachusetts accent, I thought it was more of a Brooklyn accent. (OK, Boston College, duh.)

His speech would have been better and he may have won the award if instead of speaking like he did, he just screamed and yelled and spit his speech all super intense like into the microphone.
