Don Brown's Speech at the Broyles Award Ceremony (Video)
Thought you guys might enjoy this video of Coach Brown giving a speech last week at the 2016 Broyles Award Ceremony as he was a top 5 finalist for assistant of the year.
Great guy, full of energy and passion. I enjoyed hearing his story of how Harbaugh and Drevno gave up their first class seats to him and his wife so they had a better chance of making their connecting flight. Go Blue!

Thanks for sharing, Don Brown seems to be enjoying his new job quite a lot.

Gotta be cool to come to a place like Michigan after spending a lifetime at small schools and second tier P5 programs.

He has a great boss and the talent he is able to coach at UM is unparalled to where he's been previously. Especially in the next few years, he will start to coach players that he has recruited. He'sgoing to continue having a lot of fun with the young kids.

Who's go it better than Don Brown? NOOOBODY!
December 12th, 2016 at 9:54 AM ^
Tough to reason how he lost.

How the hell did Don Brown not win the Broyles Award? Because nobody on a successful team can be good at what they do? He only took one of the best defenses in the country and made it - visibly and statistically - MUCH better. Had Alabama actually played a decent schedule, Brown's defense would have been #1 in everything...

I can't argue with someone who thinks Brown should win, but I'll say this in favor of Brent Venables:
Clemson lost 7 defensive players to the NFL Draft, including 4 in the first two rounds, and they still had a very good defense this year. Michigan lost some undrafted linebackers, Jarrod Wilson, Willie Henry, and Mario Ojemudia. That's about it. The stars of the defense returned for Michigan, whereas many did not for Clemson.

Agree.

Points are an important metric when you're talking about games, but Clemson ran (and faced) a lot more plays than Michigan this year. They also played one more game, a conference championship game in whch their opponent scored 25+. If we're just talking about the first 12 games, that number drops to 4. (For those wanting to compare, Michigan gave up 25+ twice - to OSU and Colorado.)
December 12th, 2016 at 11:21 AM ^
Then we never gave up 25+ on defense. Can't pin a fumble return (Colorado) or pick-six (OSU) on the defense.
And if you really want to get into the details, we gave up 20+ points in regulation once.
December 12th, 2016 at 11:40 AM ^
True. I don't know if/when Clemson gave up points on offense/special teams. The point still stands, though, that Clemson's pace gave opponents more opportunities to score.

In both those games the offense gave up touchdowns I believe. The defense never gave up 25 points.

Will win many awards while at UM

Unless Harbaugh takes Brown with him to Bayside High.

I don't think this joke was funny the first time you said it.
December 12th, 2016 at 2:15 PM ^
He's trying. You can allow him a corny joke without calling him out given his other contributions to the board.
On a completely unrelated note, I still can't believe I got ban hammered for calling out Pedo State - They don't deserve to have a football program let alone the joy of a B1G title and Rose Bowl.

I once got my account nuked for calling Chunkums a neckbeard.
your points will grow back, I had to start from scratch haha.

I'm sure Coach Harbaugh embraced his middle seat with an Enthusiasm Unknown To Mankind!

How can you not love this guy? He obviously loves coaching and coaching at Michigan.
I love that he called out the fact that all 11 of his starters made some sort of All Big Ten (1st, 2nd or Honorable Mention) list. That's pretty incredible.

love the story about his mom and pop at the end - touching. how lucky we are to have such a great staff.

We already spend $880k on him, I'm sure Michigan could splurge a few extra grand to get him and his wife to Arkansas in first class.

The problem with this and many other "best of..." awards (e.g. the Heisman) is that they are trying to compare between incomparable things. What's more impressive, taking an already excellent defense from a 93 to a 97, or taking a clean slate defense back to 92, same as it was last year with 7 players who got drafted? The question is unanswerable to everyone's satisfaction.
All that said, I'm still a little chapped that Mattison didn't win this award in 2011. He took a Rich Rod/GERG defense with fundamentally the same personnel, and made it one of the top defenses in the country. No disrespect to the guy from Texas who won it, but c'mon man!

that was fun to watch - thank you for posting it!

Love Don Brown. Who wouldn't want to play for him?
I didn't realize his was a Massachusetts accent, I thought it was more of a Brooklyn accent. (OK, Boston College, duh.)
December 12th, 2016 at 2:14 PM ^
Don Brown is first class... I hope he never leaves. The Airplane seat switching story with Jim and Coach Drevno was first class.
December 12th, 2016 at 4:54 PM ^
Such a down to earth guy, and one hell of a coach.
December 13th, 2016 at 12:48 AM ^
His speech would have been better and he may have won the award if instead of speaking like he did, he just screamed and yelled and spit his speech all super intense like into the microphone.
December 13th, 2016 at 9:35 AM ^
He's just being himself, what the hell else do you want?
