Devin Gardner and Sam Webb break down plays on WTKA's Monday Morning QB

Submitted by Moleskyn on September 13th, 2021 at 12:09 PM

Good content from Sam and Devin this morning:

Love the breakdowns by Devin, and his insight into the game. He's got a great personality as well, and the banter between he and Sam is great.

Also, interesting comments starting around the 15:40 mark, regarding Sean Patterson's (Shea's dad) predictions on how the QB situation would play out here, along with assessments of Joe Milton.

Overall, worth a listen.

Also, just going to put this into the comments rather than the OP. At about the 16:14 mark, they edited out Devin's reaction to Sam saying that Cade would have to be "the guy". You can start to see Devin's reaction, but his comment live was "he's not the guy". I can see why they would edit that out for the YouTube version.

That aside, I think Devin's other comments from the rest of the video show that he thinks Cade has the potential to turn things around (comparing the situation to Jalen Hurts and Tua at Alabama). Cade needs to prove that he can be "the guy" and keep competing.

And above all: we won the game. Move on to the next one and get better.

I saw that live as well and was a little surprised by how candid Devin was being. I really like Devin, he does a great job with analysis and has a great personality (like everyone says) but when he said that about Cade my heart sank a little. I have been holding out hope that they could coach him up to be a Jake Rudock type that gets significantly better as the season goes on. Maybe my hopes were too high.

Wow, brutal DG take on Joe Milton.  Not inaccurate, just honest to a fault?

It appears that Milton and GJ may have been a bit more critical of the program than may be generally known.  Devin doesn't seem like a guy who would flame anyone who wore the Michigan uniform unless he was certain there would be no repercussions from his statements.

I just think Devin doesn’t have much of a filter, but he has such a great personality he can get away with it.  It’s like that interview a few months back where he talked about the game against Michigan St. in the rain where he didn’t have an O-Line.  Funny and accurate, but I can’t imagine his old teammates loved it.

Frankly I think Michigan needs a guy like this in its media firmament.  A guy who loves the program but is willing to be critical in a non insane way.

DG, unlike some in the business,  is honest without being mean.  He is telling it like he sees it.  His ability to be self-deprecating also helps him a lot because he makes himself very believable as he talks about his own pros and cons.  I have really enjoyed his comments over the last two weeks as well as his other appearances on WTKA in the past.

Devin has a great personality because he is honest and unfiltered.  People appreciate the honesty when everyone else, coaches, media, etc, don’t want to offend anyone.  His takedown of Joe was great because it was honest and not vindictive in any way.  He could become the Johnny Miller (golf) of football analysts.

I could be wrong but wasnt the talk all last off season that Milton was working with Devin as a private coach?

Googled it while writing this comment and found this:

very interesting.

My speculation: Milton was really trashing Michigan on his way out and Devin won't stand for that.

I've watch the last couple of these (I think there have only been 2 so far), but DG has a really good voice for radio.  He can be a bit critical which could fracture an audience, but I like his analysis and how he delivers it.

DG said what many of us are thinking. Not totally dismissive that can can be a good, serviceable QB but a lot of pessimism that he can be "The Guy". I don't think that is an unfair mentality at this point. A lot of qb's can't be "the guy".

Did Sam get ready to die on a hill insisting that Gattis is still calling all the plays and this is "Alabama's offense?"  Or is that coming on Thursday on the Roundtable?

I kid, I kid.  Sort of.

Yeah, it's nice to hear Devin's analysis and everything, but like anyone, he can get it wrong. He didn't exactly sound like a soothsayer coming into 2020, which is especially odd since DG helped train him.

“I think the thing that is gonna set Joe apart and get him exactly where he wants to be when the time comes is he has left no stone unturned in pursuit of what he wants. You get a guy that’s as talented as him and a lot of times (they) kind of just rest on (their) laurels because (they’ve) never had to really do the things that some of us less talented guys had to do to try to get what we want. He has done all the necessary things and I feel like he has put himself in a perfect position to get everything that he wants out of life. He has got the type of talent where I can’t see that there’s a guy in this country that you’d just outright say, ‘hey I want that guy (over Joe) if we’re going out and throwing footballs.”

This may be the most difficult coaching task in all of sports. You have to keep your QBs injury free in practice-but  this sets up a dynamic that totally divorces itself from live-play realities. And if your QB begins being gun-shy under live fire how long do you stay with him-see if he can work through it? You can have a QB to be a world-beater in practice and yet he can't play worth a damn in a game.

Milton had the arm strength and Devin may have taught him to make all the throws-it doesn't mean he can play under the bright lights.

Love DG.  He did an amazing job and certainly has a future in broadcasting.

His Milton comments were strong but true.  As for Cade, I feel he was fair.  Cade has the job and it's his to lose, but he has not yet proven he's the guy.  He missed reads and throws and watching this makes it clear why we ran the ball 55 times and threw just 15--Cade was just not performing, and the run game was.

Let's hope we have a QB ready to perform when we need it.  I strongly believe Cade can be that guy--heck, he was that guy against Rutgers last year.  But JJ's talent is undeniable and if he's ready then Cade is in trouble if he continues to perform like this.

I enjoyed both weeks programs  with Sam and DG. His opinion of how special our run game is gets me thinking we will havea  great base for the big games. I hope Cade finds his game legs and gets past his jitters in the big outings. I can't Imagine the nerves on a Maze out night game.  It was his first and we should give him that. In time he will hopefully block out the crowd and concentrate on his job.
