Derrick Rose (likely) to NY for Smith Jr and Draft Pick(s)

Trade is not final yet, but looks like Derrick Rose is being shipped to NY for Dennis Smith Jr and draft compensation (probably a 2nd rounder).

I really like the direction Weaver is taking this franchise. Bottoming out and getting young guys opportunities. I think Smith can still potentially be a star in this league; very young guy.

a star?  His playing time has receded from 30-26-15-9.  I'll bet he's not even in the league after 2022.  But we were never going to get a 1st for Rose anyways.

Every now and then a player like this can find himself on a new team.  The hit rate isn't high but Weaver has a history of finding some gems that way.  Josh Jackson is a good example this year.  For every Jackson there's are several Musa's but it's a pretty smart strategy for a team like the Pistons.

This looks good for the pistons and meh for the Knicks. I don't get why NY would do this.  He eats into their young guys minutes,  presumably Quickley who has a future with the team. So they end up dealing a worthwhile pick on a guy with an expiring contract.

Unless they have plans to re-sign Rose at the end of the year, which again would be baffling considering the direction their team is in right now, this trade would be counterproductive.

At some point you have to pull the bandaid off and the Knicks just refuse to do so.

Works for me though. There is no worse arena than MSG. High prices, Spike Lee on the video board 24/7, asshole ushers, terrible food (at high prices), and it’s built upon the worst train hub in history (Penn Station). Finally, it replaced the beautiful old Penn Station, which is a crime against architecture.

For the Pistons it’s all about getting more chances to find good players. Smith seems unlikely to pop, but getting him and a 2nd feels like fair value for Rose.
Long way to go before the Pistons can even think about being good.

Smith, Jr. was a stud first two years at Dallas but was traded after they drafted Luka Dončić, and has been stuck on the Knicks bench. He could blossom like Josh Jackson has in a new situation, so it's not a terrible trade... but...

That being said, he's no guarantee and a 2nd round pick is a roll of the dice. I don't like what they got from this trade. Rose should have been traded away last year at the deadline, as he was worth more then.

Tbh never mind the OT tag, if you didn't know Derrick Rose was with the Pistons recently then the title of the thread is kinda confusing. And it's not like Rose was some kind of stalwart for the Pistons..he only played a little over 50 games for the team.
