Dantonio wins B1G Coach of the Year; Other awards announced
Not all that surprising, but interesting that Meyer is now 24-0 at OSU but has not won Coach of the Year yet. Here are the rest of the results: http://btn.com/2013/12/03/see-tuesdays-big-ten-football-trophy-winners/

That said, he wasn't the best offensive skill player on that team, Hyde was. Just find it weird that Miller is getting so much more hype, but maybe because he didn't have the offseason thing.

Miller is good, but Hyde hits holes like they are girls in bars.

NEXT QUESTION
December 5th, 2013 at 3:57 PM ^
The pick of Chris Borland, just from a performance standpoint, is a good one, I think. He's fourth in total tackles and tackles for loss in Wisconsin history and I think he has more forced fumbles than anyon in Wisconsin history. Just this year, he had 108 tackles (64 solo) and 8.5 TFLs for 31 yards, as well as 4 sacks and 5 QB hurries. He really was a force for the Badgers in his time there (I believe he is a senior now, so the bowl game will be it for Borland).

Could you present an argument that justfies Borland over Shazier for D POTY? I find Shazier a worthier candidate despite my obvious dislike for O$U. Guy's been wreaking havoc all year long.
December 5th, 2013 at 4:22 PM ^
I think he's more disciplined and fundamentally sound, and overall a better college football player. I don't think he'll make a better pro, as Shazier is extremely athletic and has gotten much better the past couple years, but all the other things that Borland does for Wisconsin's defense would make me pick him.
But I'd also pick Bullough over Shazier and possibly over Borland because of the amount of things he is tasked with doing for that defense. But his numbers would make people cry foul.

Ferentz has won that award 3 times. Tressel never did. I would venture to guess Meyer probably won't either. I think they got it right this year, though, with D'Antonio. O'Brien deserved it last year, too. I also agree with Space Coyote above. Hyde would be very much in the Heisman talk, if not in the lead, had he not been suspended.
December 5th, 2013 at 4:17 PM ^
is much more about exceeding expectations than it is about winning every game. tressel and meyer with all their talent are expected to be top teams ever year, same with us usually. state was expected to be great on defense but they are #1 and their offense has improved dramatically over the year and they are 11-1 which very few people expected even with the weak schedule. seems deserved to me

What a bunch of BS, Hazell got robbed.

Jerry Kill overlooked again.
December 5th, 2013 at 4:39 PM ^
for keeping the team together when Kill was out for a while. They did a fantastic job of leading the Golden Gophers to a 8 win season which exceeds anybody's expectations.

Now, if my avatar wins B1G Cariacture of the Coach of the Year of the Year award, it'll be a red-letter day.

Referring to Meyer as 24-0. That is an Ohio thing to do. Unfortunately for them, only this year's record counts/matters for awards, bowls etc. this year. They drop 24-0 as if that's supposed to mean something this year, well it doesn't. If we are going to start calling out all coaches by their all-time record at a school, the dialogue would be quite different.

OhioSt is listed as the Leaders Division champion last year. They won the Leaders Trophy!

Coach of the year should be the OC at MSU. He actually assessed the players he had available and made changes that maximized the return from them.

^I never thought I would see the day that was written . . . even on the internet. Wow.

Nothing againist Carlos Hyde, but why in the world is he running back of the year? Melvin Gordon deserves the award. Gordon still gained more yards than Hyde, even while splitting time with another 1000+ yard back. These voters are stupid.
December 5th, 2013 at 7:02 PM ^
1. Stats against big ten teams only puts Gordon at 903 yards on 125 carries (7.2 ypc). Hyde at 1249 yards on 160 carries (7.8 ypc).
2. Team success. Wisconsin lost twice, Hyde's team didn't. This would be a stupid reason considering this is an individual award and game outcomes relate to the entire team, but my guess is that some voters use it.

I detest Sparty but do have to give credit where credit is due: Dantonio did a great job this year. Meyer was given the keys to a Porsche and is doing a great job of keeping it on the road. Dantonio is getting similar results with a Honda Fit.

Mark Dantonio in my veiw, has done an amazing job at MSU. Before him State was borderline doormat status for decades with the occasional good season to a perenial B1G contender with fewer assets than Michigan, OSU, PSU and Nebraska. He has the highest winning percentage at MSU since Biggie Munn and bests Perles who had a decent run by a mile which is hard to ignore. Regardless what you think of his personality he gets the job done and that's what he is paid to do and even though I hate the success he has enjoyed over Michigan I respect the hell out of it.

He should move on to a better gig, this was probably their peak. Texas would be smart to take a long look at him and staff at season's end.

If you could choose, would you swap out Brady Hoke for Mark Dantonio?

If I could swap Rich Rod and Brady Hoke for Dantonio I'd take it in a heartbeat.
December 6th, 2013 at 9:34 AM ^
I never even considered Sparty until Dantonio took over, and now I hate them as much as Ohio State. I guess he does deserve coach of the year.
