Great title, very informative
Partial pass bc we're National Champs!
January 10th, 2024 at 6:17 PM ^
Sorry, I realized the instant I posted that I should have made the title, "Were Dierdorff and Brandstatter there?" Thanks for the partial pass. Which part?
January 10th, 2024 at 6:21 PM ^
It wasn't for spelling Dan Dierdorf's name right. Looks like you need a full pass. You can tell this is a very happy MGoBlog community - most who would skewer you on other days...

Yes, I'm still in a hangover, and I deserve all the abuse and the negs. But I still hope Dan and Jim were at the game.

I heard Demar Dorsey was there

I met Jim walking up a hill into the stadium at Penn State in 1997. He was huffing and puffing, so I offered to help him with the bag he was carrying. He politely declined my offer.
Is that helpful?

Idk but Karsch is just so bad. All he does is repeat the players full name when on a long run. Instead of saying g last name and the yard line .. he's terrible. And lost his voice.
January 10th, 2024 at 6:22 PM ^
I can’t listen to his calls. Lacks the voice and feels the need to count every 5 yards on a run. I don’t mind his tv work though.
January 10th, 2024 at 6:40 PM ^
He sounds bad when he raises is voice two octaves on any big play.

I'm gay

Jim might have been the big guy that screamed SACK TIME!! when Penix went down.
January 10th, 2024 at 6:55 PM ^
Wherever he was on that fateful evening, 'Sack Time!' was declared loudly. I think it's still echoing across the multiverse.

Ever since the late Frank Beckmann talked his way out of the job I have been unable to listen to UM radio broadcasts. I so miss his “Touchdown, Meeechigan!”
Karsch is an old hare from the TKA days, but he isn’t a good play-by-play guy.
Dierdorf and Brandstatter were fantastic color commentators.

Your post wasn't up when I replied, but I just posted the same thing about the way he said touchdown michigan.

I know this opinion is heresy to the old-timers like me who listened to Ufer back in the '60s and '70s, but when it came to accurately and succinctly describing what was happening on the field, Beckmann was far superior to Ufer.
January 10th, 2024 at 6:55 PM ^
I agree with this 100 percent
January 10th, 2024 at 6:57 PM ^
I like Karsch. Loved him on WTKA but not so much on 97.1. But man is his voice difficult to listen to. Ernie Harwell he is not. But few are. (and I am talking strictly about his voice quality and not the words coming out of his mouth).
January 11th, 2024 at 12:15 PM ^
Really? He sounds a lot like Danielson to me.
January 10th, 2024 at 9:46 PM ^
I am boggled beyond belief why the Lions let Brandstatter go. He was a fantastic color guy. Lomas Brown is so boring and offers nothing but cheerleading.
I loved Champion but Dan Miller is a great equivalent or better for some. Either are high level - I'd get Champion out of Pistons land and over to UM football if I ran the world. But Dan >>>> Lomas by a mile just like Frank >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Brandy as a PbP = Karsch
With his age I am worried we are stuck with this guy for 30 years.

Dorf was at the Rose Bowl and then visited the Lakers.
January 10th, 2024 at 11:02 PM ^
He was a really funny guy.
January 10th, 2024 at 6:36 PM ^
I miss Beckman. Something about the way he would say "TOUCHDOWN MICHIGAN" sticks with me to this day. He and Brandstatter were the best to me.
January 10th, 2024 at 7:02 PM ^
Beckmann was the best. I remember in 1986 riding home from an up north camping trip when I was 11 years old. Michigan was playing Iowa in a very important game. To this day I remember one of the calls from one of the short yardage plays during the game. "The Iowa runner ran the ball up the middle and Andre McIntyre picked him up and threw him backwards"
I can remember that specific call from him for some reason even though it happened some 37 years ago.
January 10th, 2024 at 11:18 PM ^
That was a great game, my very first one there. Game winning field goal with seconds left, and a field rush. Good times!

Jesus christ with the thread title I thought both passed away together along with Keith Jackson today! Happy all 3 are still alive!
Do better OP!

Thanks for the encouragement. I am sincerely sorry for giving you this scare. I realized my mistake the instant I posted and by then it was too late, not that that matters. (My MGoPoodle, looking at this over my shoulder, is saying, "If it doesn't matter, then why did you mention it?")
And I have no excuse for misspelling the name of a Michigan legend and maybe the greatest football color announcer of all time.
Just be grateful I didn't mention Keith Jackson in the title. You might have had a heart attack. I just wonder why he wasn't announcing Monday night. I hope he didn't get fired
By the way, a friend of mine recently pointed out that, as well-known as Dierdorf's relationship with Bo is, he was recruited by Bump Elliot. He was one of Elliot's many legacies whom he left for Bo.
