Crazy Oregon H.S. students - 2,500 mi road trip to take in UM and MSU football games
High school student seize rare historical college football opportunity.
How many of us as high schoolers would have gone on a 2,500 road trip with our buddies to go watch BOTH Oregon State at Michigan and Oregon at Michigan State football games? That's nuts.
They packed dozens of peanut butter sandwiches for the trip to save time and money.
"Aw dude, roll down the goddamn window man!"
Peanut butter breath and farts for 2,500 miles.
Also, makes one wonder how many cruel "OMG, WAKE UP!" pranks occurred along the way?

They came, we conquered, they left.

Nowadays, it's probably 90-10 since Oregon is the flashy and successful team.
I will say this however, the intensity of the rivalry is nowhere near what we are used to as Michigan fans. There are a lot of "platypuses" out here, meaning people who sorta root for both teams to do well.

I love the "platypus" moniker. That's clever.

The concept of a platypus (combination of duck and beaver) being used as a metaphor for people in the middle is genius. Made me laugh

I thought most would be Oregon fans. I was surprised it was Oregon State. I'm sure it is likely because of where they live.

Did you watch the video? Five were OSU fans and one was a Ducks fan. The OSU fans wore Sparty shirts in EL.

All of us?

so I haven't had a peanut product in 15 years. I tear up going by the peanut butter.

There were actually a good amount of Oregon fans that made it to Ann Arbor to tailgate with the Michigan fans. I remember a group of ducks and wolverines joining together in a "F$#@ Sparty" chant. Even saw several Oregon fans at the Mich game. Seems like a cool thing to do in my opinion. Travel across the country to watch the Ducks and get to take in two college football games in one day (one against your instate rival).

I saw a couple of them at Whole Foods down the road a few hours before the Michigan game and save several others in Oregon clothing in the section near us. So, I'm assuming many of these Oregon fans went to both games. It also makes me wonder whether it was a complete coincidence that both U-M and MSU scheduled the teams from Oregon on the same weekend.

I chatted up fans of both the Ducks and Beavers at the game and they were pretty classy. Like to see fans make that kind of road trip.

Just had a laugh imagining "classy" ducks and beavers. I envisioned ducks and beavers in tuxes and ballgowns, sipping champagne cocktails. chatting agreeably about the wit of Thackeray, or the latest by Somerset Maugham, and noting how oh-so-naughty Henry James is.

I think I saw that in the New Yorker once.

I talked to a bunch of OSU / Oregon fans at the game that were going to both games. Make the most out of the trip and its a once in a lifetime opportunity. A few of the Oregon fans said they always wanted to see the Big House, so they made it a 2 for 1 and spent the day watching football.
I actually talked to a couple dudes who were MSU fans and went to both games as well. One heck of a day for football in Michigan.

with games at Michigan and at Michigan State a few years ago.
Long ass day. Fun, but long, can't imagine trying to do that and drink decently.

This sounds like a really fun opportunity for high schoolers. Great for them.
Growing up in (West) Michigan, about half of my HS friends were MSU fans and half were UM fans, so this would have been one of those rare opportunities to join together for one cool football experience.

2) Don't these kids have school yet? If it's a 72 hour drive each way that's 6 days just for driving. A one week round trip minimum.

Google says it's 35 hours.

Guys, these are not high schoolers. The first line of the video states they are former high school friends and that most of the group are seniors at Oregon State.
OP, you may want to fix your title.

That explains the drinking and the 72 hour round trip for which skipping college classes is entirely reasonable. Oh, college. Such good times!
Terrible thread title.

When I was in high school the speed limit was 55 mph and gasoline was expensive and / or rationed, so I definitely would not have done a cross country trip like this.
September 14th, 2015 at 5:13 PM ^
Yeah, but we could drink when we were 18.

I remember flippign through my dad's senior yearbook. There were a bunch of "No Beer?!?!" comments. As in, the law changed his senior year and at one point during the school year, many students were of legal age and then suddenly they weren't. Kinda crazy if you think about it from the perspective of us "youngins".

Drink decently- what a noble sounding endeavor.
