Conference Tournament Results and Final Four Appearances
Deuce2Sports has posted a story looking at conference tournament results for past Final Four participants. The concluding paragraph may provide some solace to Michigan fans:
So, the morel [sic] of the story is the expectations for your team in the NCAA Tournament should dictate how much stock you put into a conference tournament. If you think your team is a possible national champ then make sure it wins its first game. If the Final Four is your ceiling then don't sweat a conference tournament loss as much as the experts want you to.

i can handle a loss to a good team like indiana.. but giving up 51 points in the second half after 17 in the first is not acceptable. and the free throws, the horror the horror
Keep in mind, in the tourney we won't be playing twice in 24 hours. That helps.
This team is not going to the final four. Sorry, don't care about rankings and projections, they don't pass the eyeball test for me. They are falling apart late in the season because they struggle on defense, lack toughness and rebounding and their late game offense consists of Trey Burke going 1 v 5. It was nice to dream for a while, but I'm not upending furniture if they don't go far in the tournament.
Too bad national champions aren't named in February.
Damn shame what happend today. No glorious lap around the lobby. I was really looking fwd to this team eclipsing what the fab 5 did. I dont feel fresh.
Does this loss hurt our seeding? No.
Does this loss count as a B1G loss? No.
Will Michigan still be seeded 3 (most likely)? Yes?
Okay cool.
Conference tournaments are only for teams that need them to get into the NCAA Tournament. We almost saw today a prime example of why they should be thrown out. Hardaway getting hurt.
Would I love another banner and have another trophy at Crisler? You bet your ass. But I'd rather have a full team going into the most important tournament.
Big waste of time conference tournaments are IMO.
We went 0-2 against Wisconsin. And don't get a chance to revenge IU.
Those are reasons enough to be pissed.
Does the Big Ten tourney matter with the "big picture"... maybe not. But my pride is bruised.
I think it sort of does hurt our seeding though, I think we were a 2 seed with a win and a 3 with a loss. I suppose the difference between a 2 and 3 seed is quite minute, though, so in that sense I agree.
this team is not going to the second round.
Not to be douchey correcter guy, but technically, Michigan already is going to the Second Round. The First Round is now the First Four. And when they played duke in 2011, it was called the Third Round.
this team is not going to the second round. You're right, your team (Purdue) didn't make it to the second round of the BTT.
fuck purdue. I may have a purdue degree, but I always was for Michigan.
Hold on. I definitely remember you posting a bunch of "Boiler Up" crap when we played them.
I was trolling. It is easy to rile you guys up.
not to be debbie downer but if you think this team is going to the final four, you're in for a world of disappointment.
We haven't won 3 consecutive games since January and since our 16-0 start we've gone 10-7. I am really hard pressed to believe that Michigan can string 4 or 5 straight victories together, especially as the level of the competition increases each time.
to rationalize a suspect result. Bottom line, this loss has less to do with legitmizing a potential conditioning concern; and more to do with the fact that the likelihood of seeing a similarly situated/talented team in round 2, and a 1 seed directly after that, just increased dramatically.
I'm not saying we're Final Four bound, but it will be nice to face teams that aren't familiar with Beilein's system, as our B1G opponents are. Remember how we looked in December against our non-conference slate.
Still can't get over some people who think Wisconsin is a bad team...
The team may be able to go on a run because the rest of the field is not necessarily built like the Big Ten. The Big Ten is tough and massive.
Pac-12, SEC, and BIG-12 teams dont seem to be as big or tough (based on my casual basketball fanship)
That being said, we will continue to suck ass in the Big Ten as long as Coach B deems it necessary to field teams with a 6'8 - 5 and 6'6 - 4
One of the HUUUUUUGEEE reasons we suck terribly at defense is because we are fucking tiny and get bullied around. Compounded with a seeming lack of fight...well we have one hell of a defensive unit.
Coach B is a great coach, no doubt..but he is fielding some Rich Rod esque teams terms of size and physicality.
We were the #2 see last year, and lost to a team from the MAC. Sure the BIG is a tough conference, but that doesn't guarantee wins against lower ranked teams. I completely agree about size, but I think its more than that, its the lack of physicality and defense. All season we kept hearing how we avaraged the fewest amount of fouls, like that was a good thing. We had fewer fouls because we were not aggressive defensively. Fundementaly, our defense has GERG level flaws fundementally, and we won that way for a while because we could outscore other teams. Unfortunately Stauskas, GRIII and Hardaway Jr. can't score against teams that play good defense, and we come up short in these critical games.
Losses are hard, but we need to keep some perspective. It is much better having these losses hurt because it takes us down to a 3-4 seed, then having it bust our bubble and head to the NIT.
Dude, we missed too many free throws and let them back in the game with less than 1 minute left. That is why we lost, not because the ball didn't fall in at the end.
I kind of doubt we'll make it out of the first weekend because we're young and soft. It is what it is..
Best thing to come from this is more time to rest. Otherwise a huge bummer all around.
And that's if we catch a break in the brackets. It's OK though. It's just part of the process.

It is interesting that the author puts it as he does. Let's take a look at a couple projected 1-4 seeds from TeamRankings as a brief example:
Seed | Team | Bid | S16 |
1 | Louisville (27-5) | 100% | 75% |
1 | Kansas (27-5) | 100% | 68% |
2 | Miami (FL) (24-6) | 100% | 51% |
2 | New Mexico (27-5) | 100% | 39% |
3 | Michigan (26-6) | 100% | 54% |
3 | Marquette (23-8) | 100% | 36% |
4 | Arizona (25-6) | 100% | 45% |
4 | UCLA (24-8) | 100% | 30% |
For the projected Top 5 seeds, the trend is pretty similar if you go back through their simulated seasons for the last few years. In essence, if your expectations were the Sweet Sixteen, for example, and your team turns out to be a 1-4 seed, then for the most part, your expected probability of getting there is not bad at all.
The best part about the NCAA Tournament is anything can happen.
Two years ago all the talking heads and fans were wondering why the hell VCU got into the field over better, more qualified teams. They made the Final Four. This team could lose another 4-13 game or 3-14 game or win the whole thing. You just don't know.
Anyone who thinks this team is going to make it out of the first weekend is delusional. There is no chemistry on the team. There are rumors of fractures between some of the freshman after the Wisconsin game in Madison. I would take Nebraska over this overrated team.
screw this, the tigers start play in 17 days.
I heard McGarry and GR III were stealing each other's snacks.
