College Quiz for the Spring Doldrums

Submitted by Smoothitron on

Since the Jaylen brown boondoggle, we seem to have hit a bit of a dead period for new developments.  Seems like as good a time as any to share some quizzes I made on sporcle.com.

The first two challenge you to place FBS and D-1 schools in their proper state.  I exclude schools with the state or major cities in their name.  The FBS one is pretty easy, the D-1 basketball one is not.

Football: In this quiz you click the answers.  If you aren't sure, skip it.  You only get one guess per school.

Basketball: In this one you just type the answers.  No penalty for wrong answers.

In the OT category, I also have a quiz for fans of Weird Al, which seems likely to cross over with this board quite a bit.  In this one you'll guess whether an audio clip is from an artist's original song, or Al's parody of that song.  It's harder than it sounds.

Hope you guys enjoy them. Post your scores so we can find out which poster is most willing to use google to cheat on an online quiz.  Also, if you have made quizzes yourself, share them here.

as have several others already.
I have an idea: for a tie breaker question or two, how about these:

a) can you define a brown boondoggle?, and

b)how does it differ from a blue boondoggle?

I got exams tomorrow...  I cant mess with that shit. But I did the mascots quiz one time and got 124/124 (assuming its still 124). If theres one thing I can do, its memorize meaningless trivia.

Aced the football one, as have others.

I bookmarked the basketball one - will definitely attempt that either today or tomorrow. There are a a good number on the list (I gave it a quick look) that I am sure I know offhand mainly because of their appearances in the tournament and the obligatory discussions that go on, but quite a few where I would be guessing outright.

Got the football one all correct, as everyone else did. Only got 81/126 on the basketball one, it was definitely a lot harder. Some schools weren't where I thought they were.

Aced football.

Went 90/126 on basketball (71%). Much tougher. About half the ones I missed I thought "oh man, I knew it was at least in that area, I'm one state away" and then some of the others just had no clue.

Unacceptable.

Since I graduated Michigan has been the king of sporcle. Make an account, set your favorite school as Michigan, and take back our rightful spot at the top

(Probably hurts right now that school is out)

Also, got 120/126 on basketball. Beat that

I got 25/25 on the football one. But, truthfully, I didn't know Troy was in Alabama but was seriously aided by the fact that it was Q25 and only one answer remained.

Went 25/25 on the football one.  If you don't mind a suggestion, you should let people enter two-letter postal abbreviations for states on the basketball one.  Spelling "North Carolina" out ten times is not exactly fun.

That aside -- Cool idea.

I remember I had a reason I didn't do this, but I cannot for the life of me think of what it was.  I might add that in soon if I can't remember, but I'll probably also shorten the quiz time if I do.

86/126 as time ran out in basketball

I should have calculated this before starting, but you have 900 seconds to get 126 schools correct, which means you need to produce a correct answer every ~7.1 seconds to get all 126.

It didn't hurt me too much, though, as I tended to move on fairly quickly if I didn't know the answer to within a fairly narrow geographic region.

I got them all on the football schools and 105/126 on basketball when time ran out.  No googling but it took me multiple guesses on a number of the basketball schools.

Suprised they didn't have Incarnate Word.

Football one was pretty easy. Basketball not so much. 83/126. The ones I got the most frustrated with were Coppin State, Oral Roberts, and Northwestern State. For some reason I was guessing every state around their area except that state. A lot of the ones I missed I had no clue on, but there were several that I saw and immediately thought duh.

So it's impossible to tell how many test takers came from MGoBlog and how many came from Sporcle itself once the FBS quiz made it onto the " popular - daily" leaderboard, but it got about 2000 plays from this topic.  So thanks guys!

The D-1 quiz got a couple hundred and the Weird Al quiz got...13.  Still cool though.
