Welcome back, dear friend.
College Football Returns Open Thread
That was the longest off season ever. Can't wait for Sat. night. I'm nervous like I'm actually playing in the game. Beat Bama!
I've got Vandy and Minnesota.
That's right, Minnesota. They're going 7-5 this year, mark my words
I hate the Ol' Ball Coach and I love the Ol' Ball Coach. Help me.
Can't wait to see the Air Raid coming from Pullman tonight. Go Cougs!
So excited, but turning ESPN on was a mistake. Lotta haters in Bristol in regards to our chances this weekend. I don't mind predicting a loss, but laughing this game off as a blowout in waiting?
My thoughts exactly. Saying Denard has no chance and to hear a Michigan man write us off so easily hurt. Why follow up with MSU as a dark horse, Bama look-alike too ?? Hurts my soul a little.
At least he's not an obvious homer like Smith & Galloway. Two dbags still disgruntled they never beat Michigan (correct me if I'm wrong)
I will go with Vandy, UCLA,Minn, and WSU
The past three games between these two teams have been barnburners so it ought to be an entertaining game.
I'm so pumped for the Alabama game. I think the key to the game is who wins the battle of wills between the smug overall superiority of Michigan and the overstated football superiority of Alabama and the SEC.
Incredible, in a word
I have missed you dearly, my friend.
Also, 7pm, ESPN3, EMU vs Ball State
Dear lord yes. 15 minutes left!
Just have been watching every commercial break waiting for the kickoff, might as well skip my job tonight... ohh sweet fall!
Here we are again gentlemen, we've survived another offseason for our favorite 4 months of the year. Go Blue!
9 Minutes and counting!!!!
Sorry to thread-jack but I thought this was a great video that helped me get through this long summer, and I thought I'd share http://youtu.be/cla5l_1rteU
There you go!
OMG Commercial breaks I can stand but Lou Holtz??? ohh well almost there....
Never have I been happier to see Lou Holtz. There. I said it.
The 2012 CFB season hath arrived.
TOUCHBACK!!! Appropriate way to start this season.
Yes. Now wash your mouth out with soap and then get back to watching football.
Done. Soap with a mouthwash chaser. I'm just so freakin' excited I am for CFB that I legitimately felt warm and fuzzy for Lou Holtz tonight. The novelty will wear off quickly and I'll soon resort to flinching at him upon sight. But, damn...it's so good to see Vandy vs. SC right now.
How many times do you think ESPN mentions that Joe Rodgers is Aaron Rodgers younger brother? I'm going to set the over under at 6.
I'm still at college. This meeting needs to get over with so I can get home and watch some FOOTBAW.
So excited it is back. Go Vandy and Minnesota.
Most of all Go Blue.
I"m so freaking happy that I'm watching college football again. Go Vandy and Go Eastern!
I've never seen so many toss run plays.
7-0 Ball State
Well Lattimore is off with a bang.
UMass - UConn, 2012 vs 2013 opponents.
I thought about taking Umass and the 22 points, but then I realized I know nothing about them.
So glad football's back. Don't know what's worse, though: watching with it muted, or watching and listening to Jessie Palmer the whole time. Vandy looks like they came to play, though...
Clowney is a beast.
Angry Clown strikes again.
SC is BIG...I'm srsly
Man, Clowney is a beast.
Screw you ESPN3 blackouts. The reason I can afford cable is because I have a job which is currently keeping me from watching my cable.
yes, screw espn with their blackouts. why is sc-vandy blacked out in wisconsin?!
Classic South Carolina QB play.
Great start by Vanderbilt tonight, even with all those toss runs
Clowney is the best DE prospect in years. It is unreal. And haha, typical USCw.
My bracket is off to a bad start. On the plus side I'm incentivized and can maintain interest in games longer this season.
What's the spread on this game?
How many times can you run misdirection? Throw the ball, it has been working thus far.
Agree. Seems to have a decent arm and decision maker in Rogers. Throw it!!
I took Vandy +7.
Surely Steve Spurrier is resting his offense by calling for fumbles and interceptions. I think it is called something like "gun 'n' DAMNIT!".
EDIT: Lattimore redeems himself by pretending the Vanderbilt defense is not there...successfully.
Holy shit... What an awful throwback lol
That's the second time that the screened back has been totally covered...spread it out downfield.
It's effing bullshit that ESPN ranked Sparty and Wisconsin as the most exciting finish of last season over Under the Lights. We had 3 tds in the last few seconds and the game was a big comeback, AND it was the first nightgame in Michigan history! Big comeback+3 last minute tds>one catch. Conspiracy!! Lol
Then it's the most exciting ending. The MSU bomb was a bigger final play than Roundtree's catch.
They keep running misdirection and screens thinking S.C. is aggressively bringing pressure, but why would S.C. bother bringing pressure when they've only passed the ball past the line of scrimmage twice?
Watching Eastern vs Ball State. I'm kind of embarrassed.
His goddamn knee was down...
explain to me how UCLA has had two extra points blocked?
Freshman kicker, kicking low with a tall Rice linebacker getting penetration and putting his hand up.
Mostly the freshman kicker, though.
Mike Cox getting snaps at UMass!
Edit: Definitely multiple snaps. Not sure if he started, but he's definitely getting PT. Good for him.
Glad to see him getting some playing time
Rodgers is making some dangerous throws, but it's working.
What a poor backfoot throw that he could not have gotten luckier on
That Vanderbilt pass had pick written all over it. Thank goodness that didn't happen.
They might lose tonight, but Franklin has started something special there. Now only Kentucky is the perennial SEC doormat.
How does Rice keep getting these BCS schools to play at their stadium? UCLA this year, Purdue last year, Northwestern two years ago.
DB should take notes.
I'm doing some scouting. Killing two birds with one stone. Watching umass at uconn on ESPN3.com
With McGuffie at Rice? Are they limiting his exposure due to the concussion issues or playing him at the slot? I find it hard to believe that he could start at M (even on THAT team) and not break the lineup at Rice.
8 catches for 63 yards.
No carries, interestingly.
He started at slot receiver and actually looked decent, but no more than a plus Dileo. I think injuries really limited his athletic potential.
FCS southeast missouri state is beating central. What a joke. 17-10
and is currently in the red zone...on ESPN U Goal Line
EDIT: Wide open receiver = 24-10 SEMOST
Let's make that 24-10 SEMO over CMU.
TD Eastern they are up 13-10 after the missed XP
Thankfully the size differential between Bama's Oline and our Dline is not as huge as that between S Carolina and Vanderbilt. 4 and 2 on your side of the field is ballsy.
TD CMU. 24-17 SEMO in the 2nd quarter.
I'd like to see just once more the graphic comparing the weights of USC's OLine against Vandy's DLine it just isn't clear enough for me yet...
Enos seems like a pretty shitty coach
I bet he won't be too sad if CMU gets killed when state comes to Mt Pleasant. He took a decent program and turned it into shit almost instantly.
Ok stupid question, but how do you make ESPN 3 full screen?
Nevermind it works on google chrome.
10-10 at the half at Vanderbilt-South Carolina. That was actually a pretty exciting first half. I like that Vanderbilt just keeps coming at the Gamecocks, and it seems like Franklin has them playing with a fire that I don't remember Commodore teams having in the past. With Shaw out, I imagine Spurrier goes back to the "fun 'n' gun" possibly.
Rice just looks lost on these highlight cut ins that ESPN is showing.
Reminds me of the 2006 Michigan defense that would hold opponents to negative rushing yards at the half. Though I suspect the reasons for the numbers are different in this case.
UConn might be prepping for a 7-5 BCS trip this year with a performance like this!
umass got new helmets I see.
I hope Shaw gets better. Injuries stink and I know they are part of the game but never want to see them happen to anyone.
Thompson looks roughs. Gotta wonder how long it takes the ole ball coach to put in the 3rd stringer.
EMU had a receiver wide open for what should have been a TD, too bad he had no idea where the ball was.
Looks like Shaw could be coming back in.
Vandy kicks a FG, up 13-10 with 6:02 in the third
Shaw or not. South Carolina looks to be pretty well overrated (not exactly a surprise). And CMU is embarassing themselves
Vandy is getting pretty close to blocking some of USCe's punts
but that running back is like oj without the knife
Woo! Michigan football reference on ESPN!
Apparently we were the opponent for Vandy's first-ever home game.
Vandy almost had an ND backwards pass moment...
At least Vandy didn't punt from there
South Carolina's offense looks very inept. Shaw looks real timid.
No....that is just great ees eee cee defense.
The injury or whatever happened to him in the middle of the game has made him less effective.
injury or not.....it doesn't matter if you decide to not hand the ball to arguably the best RB in the nation.
Also....Pollack/Palmer are making this game unwatchable for me. I really can't stand either one of them.
Hey did anyone know that Aaron Rodgers is the brother of the Vanderbilt QB?
Wow, replay of dude running wrong way is all sorts of messed up. Not only is he going the wrong way but his team is blocking for him and the other team prevents him from scoring a safety or fumbling/dropping it in his own end zone. Crazy.
Shaw really needs to learn how to slide.
YOU HAVE AN ALL-AMERICAN RUNNINGBACK, YOU DON'T NEED TO FIGHT FOR THAT EXTRA YARD!!!
Once again Vandy shits the bed when they have great field position.
Just got back from Kelly Shorts. CMU might escape with a win but Enos is terrible and no chance they pull the upset next weekend.
Is Enos still trying to be a power team in the MAC? Someone needs to tell hiim at these smaller schools the spread is the best way to make hay and have success.
Holy shit...what a hit
How was that not a hold on SC?
It looked like he had full possession of the ball before it touched.
Vandy will have a shot for the win!
Does anyone think Vandy can drive 75 yards to win this thing?
I have faith! That and I want to see a top 10 SEC team get beat the first week!
Unless SC decides to completely wiff on a tackle like they did before. Vandy's offense is pfffffft
Should have been PI on that.
Was FCS/1-AA teams beating FBS/1-A teams somewhat common before the whole Horror thing? I feel like every year 2-3 FBS teams go out and embarass themselves.
Already tonight CMU has found themselves down by 2 TDs to SE Mo St and MTSU is losing 24-12 to McNeese St. And there's the classic Portland St beating Oregon St last year and also Minnesota losing to a FCS team every year.
It just seems more common now. Maybe its just me
Go Vandy Go!
Go Vandy Go!
HOW DO YOU MISS THAT REF?!
That probably should have been called.
I'm not a professional but I'm pretty sure that was interference...
I guess that wasn't PI?
Wow. Terrible no call. Great throw by Rodgers
Wow. Vanderbilt just got screwed on that PI missed call. Blatant
Any HS refs on the board tonight? Is that an easy call given the refs position? Or would it be a tough angle?
That was some terrible officiating. Difference in the game for Vandy.
Call the PI
Making CCHA hockey refs look like high performers since 1971
And that's the game barring a T/O
Well at least Vandy covered, but good god they got screwed.
Outside of a couple of parts of South Carolina rooting for the Gamecocks tonight?
Lets go BYU!!!
I'm having a moral crisis about whether I can root for BYU while drinking.
Shit. Oh well...go Cougars! Washington State Cougars that is. Mike Leach is a bamf.
Let's Go WSU
Oh great. Matt fucking Millen.
O my gosh. The first word out of the BYU-WSU anouncers' mouths was about the ESS EE SEE. You can't make this up.
How is a Big Ten team playing on such an obscure channel at such a crappy hour (11 p.m.) on a Thursday? I mean, it's Minnesota, but still...
Matt Millen part of the crew for the next game. What else is on?
Thank you sir. You are a gentleman and a scholar. Go into my stables and take my finest stallion. His name is Wingjammer.
Tessitore is awesome though!
On a non-football note, are the Tigers ever going to score again? I mean, this is Kansas City they're playing...
And they just got swept by the Royals.
headscratching is the Royals just swept Chicago, as well. Definatly a incredibly dissapointing series. Hopefully they can rebound against the Sox, must win series at this point.
Calvin had a HUGE game haha
Still on ESPN's box score, http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=320830008
on 47 plays against UConn. Yes, that's 1.255 yards per play. Here's a link to the box score.
I mean, they're still pretty much an FCS team.
It feels less funny considering how many yards they put on us 2 years ago
EDIT: It is pretty darn impressive (or sad) that Uconn held Umass to 3 yards rushing on 24 attempts. I'm presuming there's a few sacks in there
After watching the UCLA game and seeing Devin Lucien make a couple of really nice catches, I am really starting to wonder just what the coaching staff was thinking when they turned him down, he'd be awfully nice to have this year.................
BYU is killing it tonight, that or WSU is really bed.
I assume Michigan flew to Dallas today, correct? If that's the case, surely SOMEONE has information on whether Fitz or Clark were on the plane. Why hasn't it leaked?
Hoke, I believe, even said it may be a gametime decision for Fitz. So I was under the impression that he was flying with the team regardless. Clark on the other hand, I'm not really sure.
If i was a betting man I would put money on BYU and WSU ending up in a bench clearing brawl tonight.
This is a really ugly game.
Is there bad blood between these teams?
were never very good on defense, looks like that trend will continue at WSU.
Is this a home-and-home thing or is Minnesota playing a one-off on the road against the Mountain West?
Holyshit, I have never seen this many flags in a half before.
Halftime reporter- How has your QB play been? Leach- "Average."
For those watching the WSU vs BYU game, you may have missed an interesting little tidbit... Mike Leach has not been in college football for the last two years. The over under that ESPN mentions this fact again is at 27...
is a surprisingly decent game. At least if you don't mind defensive slugfests. I figured that one team or the other would blow up and knock the other one into an irrecoverable position by this point, but no, still a one score game. 0_o
I gave up on BYU vs WSU pretty quickly, because watching a good team beat a baby seal just isn't fun unless it was us rolling Minn last year. Even then it wasn't "fun" so much as cathartic and soul-cleansing.
