For coaches/ smarter football minds...How much of a game can be scripted?

Submitted by Bo Harbaugh on November 18th, 2023 at 4:51 PM

First things first...

Fuck Ohio

Fuck Big

Fuck NCAA

Anyhow, I know it's early, but curious how many drives a team can realistically script for going into an important game.  Moore looks to be overwhelmed with duties as OL/OC/Head Coach.

I know teams often script opening drives as well as first drives coming out of the half.  Beyond scheming for a given opponent, how much of next week's game can we have pre-planned or scripted given that so many unpredictable things often happen in games, and ebb and flow is inevitable?

The hairless nut game plan has been worked out since the summer and practiced every week … there will be plays that we have yet seen this year … mind you they have to be executed… as Bo said “ are you a State Street player or are you a Main Street player ? “

Moore looks overwhelmed.

Huh?

It wasn’t the cleanest game but I think most of the mistakes made against Maryland were on the shoulders of the players on the field. JJ was off, Roman was out, OL went out, and Maryland’s offense is no joke.

So I guess I don’t know what you’re asking about in regards to scripts?

How so?

JJ - 12/23, 141, 1 INT

BC - 28 CAR, 94 YDS, 2 TD

and really nothing else from anyone. With multiple starters out in offense, they were going to be hamstrung anyways. I noticed multiple missed blocks, drops, and errant throws. Moore also went for it on 4th down and was 3/3 for the day so it’s not like he was being conservative.

I’m afraid you’re confusing player execution with play calling here. Moore isn’t a mastermind but he’s also no slouch.

Pure script as in totally pre-designed plays almost regardless of the defense you see? Very little. Like half of an opening drive.

You can plan for plays against certain looks but purely scripted "no matter what" plays are very few. Even the most predetermined throws you see a lot with JJ have some read to them. If you take that INT before the half, it was mostly predetermined and that's not a very efficient way to run a passing attack but the issue there was JJ's throw more than the call (even if predetermined by design). I don't consider that a scripted play despite being executed like one.

Pure script is very little unless you're getting exactly what you want from the opponent's defense across a long timeframe.

Script:

#1 Have a healthy OL, a healthy Roman Wilson, and a healthy Michael Barrett for the entire game.
#2

That'll be about as important as the rest of the script.

I know it is Borges but I think in one of Sam's show he said that probably one or two drives. Nothing more. He was a OC for a long time. I trust his take.

If you are worried about play calling next week, I wouldn't. Their game plan was different this week. LT out. JJ might be restricted due to some boo boo and they are not going to run him much. On top of that Roman was out.

This will be a different team and game plan will be sweet. Of course, Moore has to call the right plays, but I think he will. Harbaugh will ensure Moore is on the same page with him. I have seen a Borges team go toe to toe with OSU.

So can Jim communicate at all to the staff during the game?   Short answer is, NO, but for those less informed (me), can Jim text, leave a voicemail, send an email… 🤷‍♂️

JFH can not be at the arena during the game but what can he do?

Overwhelmed?

This was a classic trap game

The starting left tackle was out

The number one receiver was out early with a possible concussion

JJ was off, rusty and made some awful decisions 12/23 for 141 and the INT in the end zone which was the most important play for Maryland

Oh BTW.  There may have been a slight distraction that the staff and players had to deal with.

Moore called a clean game and made good decisions for the majority of the game.

Maryland is a good team especially at home.  The momentum the had from the INT carried them for a while.

Great Victory for us - all attention needs to be looking forward to OSU, getting healthy and drowning out the chatter that will only amplify this week.

I think people misunderstand "scripting." There may be plays or tendencies planned on the first drive to see what the other team does in response. However, you can't script multiple plays and sets of downs. If your first two plays get blown up, you aren't going to look at your script and run the same 3rd play in 3rd and long vs 3rd and short or 1st down.

The essence of what the scene is supposed to be about is scripted. The dialogue is improvised.

Hard fought win today, but not as rough as Illinois last year with Harbaugh leading the way.

Moore wasn't overwhelmed, he's just has a tough job. It's hard to be consistent week after week. It's a one game season now. #beatohio

Of course there's always a game plan.  The staff studies film 40 hours/week.  But the other team studies your film too.  So you don't just get to execute your game plan without any resistance.

It's alway going to come down to down, distance, field position as to what plays you're gonna run.  I would say if you are 1st and 10 in between the 25 yard lines it's a blank slate and you have your entire playbook to choose from.

Think todays game was the first I can remember in 2 years where we were outplayed in the 2nd half.  I think the reason for that was Tua made some great throws.  But before a couple years ago it seemed like we never were making many halftime adjustments.  Which is your best chance to flip your script. The last couple years it has been a transormation in that regard.  We just seem to come out of halftime and own teams.  In game adjustments are always being made but its more difficult.  You only get three time outs.  Every team has guys up in the booth who are communicating every play what they're seeing.  I don't think I see this in CFB (maybe it's illegal) but I'm sure you've watched NFL games where they are printing out O & D alignments on paper on the sidelines and assistant coaches are going over them with position groups, and the QB especially, while the game is happening depending on which side of the ball is on the field.

Really tired of the negativity after a gritty win on the road. Was it the right play when corn John is wide open and JJ misses it? Is it the right call when the d is playing soft coverage? I think the one thing Sheronne did was not make any fatal errors.  He didn’t coach like someone that seemed to have too much on his plate. Went for it on 4th and converted and didn’t force it and punted when he needed to. How many times have we wrung our hands in the game before the Game? Burn the tape and prepare to beat that team until they say our name!

I would add fuck any of our coaches involved in the so called cheating scandal. I'm afraid it will set this great program back many years once all the dust settles. They have tarnished coach Harbaugh.  You can see the hurt on his face.
