Coach Gattis discusses Joe Milton, Michigan's offense, and More

Coach Gattis did a Zoom presser earlier today to answer media questions about the offense, practicing in the midst of covid and more:

This is 50 minutes long. Can the OP or anyone else provide a helpful summary or important time stamps? I can offer a measly upvote for the troubles.

I'm still getting through it - lots of coachspeak, as can be expected.

A few bits:

On Nico's possible return - Gattis notes that he has been talking with Nico a lot and seems to imply that the door is still open for him to return. Says that he supports Nico either way and that Nico will make an announcement when he is ready.

On QBs - Says that no starter has been named and that Joe and Cade are both competing. Says both QBs have the same playbook and that Cade is expected to be able to run all the same plays.

Names TE Erick All as a standout player in camp.

This is what I find confusing about Nico's situation: seemingly everyone complained that we haven't thrown it to him enough.  If that was true, shouldn't there be a relative dearth of highlight footage for him (as compared to the other star WRs considering the draft)?  And, if so, why would he not want to return considering that he would likely be the #1 target in Gattis' offense this year?  Unless it is something personal (maybe he doesn't want to return the agent money, doesn't like doing class & football, falling out with coaches, etc.) - it just seems odd.

I hear you and would be selling Nico on the idea of a Henne-Edwards relationship with Milton.... but his departure doesn't surprise me.  While WRs are a competitive group in the NFL draft and he doesn't have a ton of highlights to lean on....he can take a season off, kill it at the combine, kill it at some workouts, and do fine.

I'm more perplexed and dumbfounded by McCaffrey.  I literally can't make sense of it other than him being pissed that Milton has caught or passed him.

  • Even if Milton has passed him, it can't be by a mile (or the coaches should make sure it doesn't seem like it.)
  • We all know that it takes two QBs to get through a season
  • He won't lose a year of eligibility if he stays or leaves later
  • He's still in class to be able to graduate this semester
  • Even if he found a way to transfer right away, he's ineligible to play this season.

Why wouldn't Dylan stay, fight it out, know he's one snap away from lots of playing time, can transfer at the end of the season and join a new team in the spring, and still keep all of his eligibility.

Don't get it man.....

I also don't quite get Ambry's decision either because I seriously doubt he has enough film to feel secure with his draft position a year after Hill went undrafted after a stellar career.

Sort of. He's likely on immunosuppressive drugs that could make a bout with COVID-19 worse than usual for him. A bigger factor, though, is that likely that coming back could really hurt his draft stock if his UC flares again. That would be a huge red flag for NFL teams who expect their draftees to, you know, play. If it happens while he sits out, they don't find out.

What if the coaches were talking about “redefining starting qb” again or trying to install some of that 2 qb stuff we saw with Shea and Dylan. And he just said fuck this, I got sold on that last year I’m not falling for that again, either name me the starter or I’m out.

Nico I understand because teams look at potential and Nico showed out the times he was thrown to.

Dylan is a bit stranger but not because he wants to transfer. I find it odd that Joe saw little to no time last year, see the Bowl game in Milton’s backyard when the coaches didn’t give him a measly snap, strange. And now there’s this big shift to Joe as the clear leader in the clubhouse to start as QB? I just hope it is all because Meritocracy actually took place this time and not because some other reason the coaches wanted to have Joe in.

Sam Webb had a guy on the other day (Spath?) who hinted that part of McCaffrey's decision was due to health concerns. But that doesn't jibe with the fact his parents were here a week earlier advocating for football this season. For all the reasons you listed it doesn't make any sense, other than just basic wounded pride.

I think McShay sucks too. I remember he was talking about a college LB one time and saying how he’ll play 3-4 OLB in the NFL and that didn’t make sense to me, the player didn’t fit that role. After he was done talking, Spielman, who was also on the broadcast, was like I don’t see this player being a 3-4 LB ever in the NFL, that’s not the type of player he is. That pretty much solidified my thoughts on McShay.

I don't think that is a fair comparison.  Jalen has less positive film than Nico.  Even though Jalen played well against OSU and Alabama those are only 2 games.  Nico had more than that and has obvious talent.  Jalen needs another season to guarantee his 1st round status.  Right now he MIGHT be a first round pick.

I read that as more of a statement on the offense not changing based on who is in there at QB. Joe/Cade aren’t getting special packages that the other isn’t getting. Kinda like how the offense changed a bit and there were more QB runs when Dylan played last year because he was more capable/willing to run than Shea.

Please don't read too much into my paraphrase of what Gattis said.

Angelique asked a question about whether they viewed Cade as more of a "game manager" quarterback and Gattis said no they don't, Cade is expected to run the entire offense and they didnt have a different offensive package for Cade.

That said - I assume that the "no starter has been named" is the usual coach-speak designed to motivate Joe. Tbh, Gattis seemed to be fairly limited in his praise of Joe and (this is pure conjecture on my part) if I had to bet money, I would say there's probably more some issues with Joe the coaching staff is not happy with yet and this is their way of trying to motivate him.

Gattis had praise for Cade, but i felt more like "Cade can use the big boy potty now!" rather than somebody who was about to take over the team.

Watched the entire video.  Following were my takeaways / impressions:

Needs to improve from 2019:

  • Reduce fumbles - both RB and QB
  • More explosive run plays
  • Improve pass completion percentages (both QB accuracy and WR drops)

Keys to the 2020 camp:

  • develop OL physicality
  • ball security at RB
  • develop WR packages that are explosive
  • great TEs need to be better utilized (cited All as explosive)

He hyped everyone, including Joe and Cade.  Seems excited about team growth, but maybe a bit concerned about OL not having enough reps in full pads.

This is the apparent depth chart:

  • QB - Milton / McNamara
  • RB - Charbonnet / Haskins
  • HB - Evans / Corum
  • WR - Wide open ... package driven including the frosh
  • TE - Eubanks / All / Schoonmaker
  • OT - Mayfield / Hayes / Stueber
  • OG - Filiaga / Barnhart / Keegan
  • C - Vastardis / Carpenter

Thanks. I like that they're listing HB as its own position -- feels like some of the most exciting things in offense (recent Oklahoma and last year's LSU) made use of a lot of two back threats where both are running and receiving threats. Given the packed slot and RB rooms, I'm hoping to see a lot of this getting used.

"Apparent" depth chart that I derived from how he spoke about each person in each position group.  WR group was all over the map.  Definitely most excited about the WR room, but was not yet certain on how to deploy all the weapons.  Part of the 2020 camp goals was to develop the most explosive "packages" of WRs ... did not sound like a true depth chart with so many guys to move around depending on the schemes.

I didn't watch the whole thing because (looks at 50-minute running time), but I noticed that Gattis did make a golf reference when talking about Milton (that he had that extra cub in his bag, assuming in reference to his arm), so that was fun.  But just a lot of generalities there; lots of "he's made great strides and has a great arm" stuff, which is positive but also not necessarily particularly instructive.

Anyway, we'll see soon enough.
