Clarence Murphy doesn't think Grimes is coming to Michigan

Submitted by MH20 on
Rivals just put out an ITF Extra on the Murphy/Grimes situation. According to Clarence Murphy, Tony Grimes has a problem with the cold (enough such that he wouldn't go to a school in the north) and will not be coming to Michigan.
Murphy went on to reiterate that Grimes has issues with the weather up north when talking about the reasons that he committed to Maryland. "I knew it was going to come down to Maryland and Michigan," he noted, "and once I found out Tony didn’t want to go up north anymore, I just started focusing on what was best for me."
Could this be some of what Sam Webb was hinting at? I know nothing is for sure yet, but this information is certainly not encouraging. Link($): http://michigan.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=338&mid=130172583&sid=883&ti…

I don't get this line of thought. What does not wanting to live in cold weather for the next 4 years have to do with playing in the nfl? Even if did get drafted by Green Bay or such can't he just acclimate then? Do teams not draft players from the south because "they haven't played in cold weather"?

It is not about him not wanting to live in cold weather just that if he is going to let temperatures keep him from getting a degree at the greatest university and stopping him from playing football for those four years how is he going to be able to handle the playoffs in mid January in Green Bay or New England. No one says it will keep him from getting drafted but you don't get time to get acclimated to temperatures before you have to man up and play for an NFL team because they don't afford you that time in today's game. You have to be ready to go wherever when they call your name on draft day. You can't just play a half and then go to the locker room because you are cold. Weather is a part of football. Always has been and always will be and even if he does make it to a NFL team and gets drafted by a warm weather organization or one with a dome you still have cold games. And if I am not mistaken it gets pretty chilly in Maryland too. I wish we could have gotten him and I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes but I hope for his sake later on in life there is some underlying reason for not wanting to come here other than the cold because he will have to get over that real fast at the next level.

It's YOUR opinion that this is the "greatest university", not the entire country's. He could end up somewhere else that has good academics. And regardless, whatever you put into your education, you'll get out of it, no matter where you are. When it's time for him to play in the pros, he'll play in the pros if he's good enough. You act as though he's not going to be able to play well as a professional because he wants to go somewhere warm. Troy Polamalu went to college in L.A., and now he plays football in Pittsburgh. He's doing fine. Ed Reed went to school in Miami. Are you questioning his toughness now that he's playing in Baltimore? Carson Palmer went to school in L.A., but he's doing just fine in Cincinnati. This is dumb.

Grimes seems to be choosing based largely on cold weather, not the potential school's academic prestige. As Michigan fans/students/alumni, WE think academics are very important. Football players don't necessarily agree. They think about football, and Maryland has produced some decent talent in the last several years (E.J. Henderson, Shawne Merriman, Domonique Foxworth, Darrius Heyward-Bey, for examples).

What the hell does this even mean? People write bullshit like this all the time, and it's ridiculous. Just because a kid doesn't want to spend 4 years in the freezing cold doesn't make him a pansy or anything. This kid gets to CHOOSE where he goes to play football for 3-5 years. All other things being equal (which they're not in this case, but just for the sake of argument), how many of you would choose to live and play football in freezing weather as opposed to 70-degree weather? Some of you are taking offense that a 17-year-old kid from Florida likes warm weather better than cold weather.

if he even gets to the NFL, that is. I suppose that's one downside of going after guys from warmer weather states, but that's recruiting for you. This recruiting season is going to be one hell of a roller-coaster ride. I predict that there will be 6-8 new names we sign in comparison to the most-likely lists everybody had just two weeks ago. Those who WANT to come to Michigan will be champions.

We have been under a freeze advisory for the past week, and I live much farther south than Grimes. It rarely gets cold here, but even I had to turn the heat on last night. If this is true, I blame Jay Hopson. The guy couldn't get anyone to sign when he was here, helps regress our LB's, and then is responsible for our remaining targets. Thanks.

having lived in A2 and DC it is much warmer on average in Maryland than Ann Arbor. Its still winter, but its much shorter and much warmer. That 6 degrees someone pointed out makes a huge difference. Although there are wintery days, it was not uncommon to have 50s and sometimes even 60s in the winter months.

its sounding like the main attraction of michigan for grimes was the fact that both he and murphy could attend. it sounds like the coaching staff didn't like grimes enough to give away two scholarships. always sucks to lose a corner that had an osu offer, but we still have three (which is one more than you usually need in a class anyways). furthermore, there have also been reports coming out recently that we're going to get dior mathis. there's still an outside chance that we work some magic on latwan anderson. and if we can get rashad knight, he could play corner. morale of the story, i'm not that worried.

The "reports" that we're going to get Dior Mathis have come from random national recruiting gurus who don't pay close attention to Michigan recruiting. By "outside chance" that we work some magic on Latwan Anderson, I wonder if you mean "no chance." And Rashad Knight was being recruited as a safety even when we were desperate for cornerbacks. I do think he could play corner at the next level, but that's not where the coaches want him. If we get him, he'll end up at safety.

dear tom lemming, note that the morale of my post was that i am not worried because we still have three good cornerbacks coming in. if the coaching staff felt grimes was good enough to merit two scholarships, we would have gotten them both.

terms. In jobs I have left in the past, I tie up loose ends. This is about the players' best interest not relationships with coaches. I know, I'm naive. Sounds like Hopson got close with Grimes, and RR didn't stay up to date with Hopson. I'd think Hopson would represent a little for Michigan. It's not like RR left him out to dry. The in house visit did occur. Which taken from the flight tracker, RR attended (not verified). There is still hope here. Michigan is a better opportunity for Grimes than Ole' Miss. Miami might be warmer and as nationally relevant, but Grimes could move right into the big house backfield if he wanted. At least there is a great opportunity.

I'm sure he'll refuse to play in the NFL because it's cold. He'll just sell insurance somewhere warm. OR He'd just rather spend four years in a warm place than in a place that has sub-freezing temperatures for the majority of the winter. WHAT A FREAK!!! Your post is dumb.
