I'VE HAD JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF YOU SONNY
Really I just wanted to use Grimes and Nutt in the same sentence cause it sounds kinda naughty. But also there's this article referenced by Bruce Feldman in an ESPN Insider article:
Looks like our old friend Tony Grimes was potentially suspended for some academic hijinx or another. Apparently our awesome luck with DB's extends to one-time recruits who
were paid chose to play elsewhere?
Clarence Murphy has committed to Maryland, according to Tony Grimes.
Grimes just told me that Michigan is still in the mix for him, as well as Ole Miss, and Maryland.
He said the cold will play a factor, but it's going to be cold anywhere(?). He's just going to play it day by day.
So, in my opinion, this probably means bad news for Michigan. His tone and the way he was talking wasn't very positive. With Murphy choosing Maryland, everyone is kind of seeing the writing on the wall. I'm not sure what happened to change Grimes mind, but it seems like it is changing.
He's playing everything close to the vest right now, so he's not telling a lot. Like I said, I don't think it's good news, though.
Rivals just put out an ITF Extra on the Murphy/Grimes situation. According to Clarence Murphy, Tony Grimes has a problem with the cold (enough such that he wouldn't go to a school in the north) and will not be coming to Michigan.
Murphy went on to reiterate that Grimes has issues with the weather up north when talking about the reasons that he committed to Maryland.
"I knew it was going to come down to Maryland and Michigan," he noted, "and once I found out Tony didn’t want to go up north anymore, I just started focusing on what was best for me."
Could this be some of what Sam Webb was hinting at? I know nothing is for sure yet, but this information is certainly not encouraging.
TOM: Does Jay Hopson leaving affect your feelings towards Michigan at all?
TONY: I wouldn't say it does, because he wouldn't be my position coach if I go there. I have been talking to coach Hopson this whole time, but I met the other coaches on my visit.
TOM: What other visits have you taken, and what do you plan on taking?
TONY: I've been to Maryland, and I plan on going to Ole Miss. I'm going to try to squeeze in Miami and Georgia, too.
TOM: Are you and Clarence still planning on going to the same school?
TONY: As far as this point, yes that's the plan.
TOM: Is Michigan still on top for you?
I will say that Tony wasn't aware that there was a dead period, and seemed frustrated that his coach was the one that told him coach Hopson was leaving, and not Michigan. (That kind of makes me feel like there might be some schools breaking the rules with contacting him, if he didn't know.) Once I told him it was a dead period he understood. We'll see what happens. I have a bad feeling about Miami for some reason, but that's not based off of anything, so take it FWIW.
Not sure if you've seen this before, but FL CB Tony Grimes has Michigan, Ole Miss, Maryland, West Virginia, and Oregon in his final five. Let's get 'em!
He lets it be known U of M is his only official visit scheduled so far:
