Is Charlie Weis Done For???

Submitted by umfan on
Will Charlie Weis be fired if he loses to USC? I'm not to up-to-date on this topic but I know that Charlie "Arrogant Fat Man" Weis is on the hot seat (as he should be) and he is obviously not a good head coach. Will the ND management admit to the mistake of hiring him and fire him or will they be too stuck up to admit it and keep him around. I know his contract is still keeping him around for some years. I would fire him. What do you think they will do?

I'm in Chicago, surrounded by ND fans and they all think he's done. Buyout or not, he needs to beat USC, according to them. And the national media is starting the bang the drum loudly. I think its 50/50.. after all, they did improve from last year (or did they?). But if they do fire him, here's who I think they'll hire: Brian Kelly. That's right. But only after they get turned down by their top 5 big name candidates.

This way, we're assured of Irish mediocrity...plus, think of all of the good material he'll provide us if he stays. Seriously, they probably need to hang with USC, and not embarass themselves, for them to keep him around.

Yes. Keep him around as long as possible. It will be a sad day for Irish haters when Charlie Weis leaves. I want them pissing away money to him for as long as possible.

I hope he stays forever and ever. I love him and his fat, bloated everything. Unless, of course, ND plans on hiring John Cooper. But my totally unscientific analysis predicts ND gives him one more year before firing him. The recruits!

I'd like one more year too. Plus, if there are a ton of rumors about him being fired soon, but he's not actually fired, that will really deter recruits from committing there. No one wants to commit to a guy they think will be gone in a year.

i can't see them firing him after this season. they are obviously going to lose to USC (badly) barring a freakin miracle, but i don't think notre dame is dumb enough to give weis $15+ mill for sucking when clausen should be much improved next year as well as some of weis' other recruits. i'd be willing to bet if he goes 7-5 or worse in 2009 that he will be axed though. especially if he loses rivalry games with us and USC

I hope they keep chunky around....I like my "Charlie Weis should probably eat less" t-shirt too much for him to get fired. Great recruiter but his bariatric ass can't couach a lick.

I would be devastated if Brian Kelly went to ND. I'm a GVSU grad and saw first-hand the D2 power he created in little ol' Allendale, MI. It would be like if Tom Brady went to the Cowboys. Or if Michigan hired Fat Fuck Phil Fulmer. Oh, the humanity.

Word. The good news is ND Nation has been trashing the very idea of Kelly... which, like, okay. Keep shooting for Gruden, idiots, and when Kelly goes to Tennessee and you're left with the Boise-TCU-whatever-assistant platter, we'll be laughing.

A lot of people on this blog were also against Kelly. More so in the "we would rather have someone else but whatever he's an asshole and we'd be ok since he can coach but it doesn't matter because Brian says Michigan won't even sniff him" way than in the ND "top of the mornin' to ya" way. Shit though, if I'm a good coach like BK or Butch Davis, I'd be salivating at the talent on ND's roster. They just lack a coach, not talent.

I remember whenever people mentioned Kelly for our job, there was a chorus of vague accusations of character problems with him every time. If it was an issue for us, I imagine a school as image-concious as ND would have the same accusations shouted from the rafters. My question: what did he do? Why does everyone think he's an amorale schiester?

I would also be really bummed if Brian Kelly went to ND, because I am a huge fan of his and I would have to hate him. I didn't go to GVSU (I went to UM) but I'm from GR and watched him build GVSU into a Dynasty. I was a student at U of Cincinnati's law school when he was hired there and I told all my classmates how awesome her would be for the program and I'm so happy I was right. It would be a bummer if I had to loathe a guy who I think is such a great coach and solid guy. I'm cheering against that hire.

What if the financial crisis keeps ND from firing him? It sounds bizarre, but college endowments have been hit really hard by the financial crisis. It may be the case that Notre Dame still has almost as much money as God, but my guess is that a $15 million buyout looks a lot more expensive now even to them than it did a year ago. Imagine going to a Board of Trustees meeting where everyone is talking about belt tightening and try to explain how you're going to blow $15 million to fire your fat ass football coach. It's a bit unlikely, but I like the idea that the subprime mortgage crisis has spread not only to the point of bankrupting Iceland, but to making Notre Dame football miserable for one more year.

So they lose to USC. Still, no way he gets fired after this year. The team has still won 6 games and improved since last season. If the team doesn't win more than 6 games next season -- that's when things might get interesting.

Charlie Weis = comedy This situation at Notre Dame is (and has been) so hilariously awful, any Michigan fan would love to see it wreak havoc for another few years. 2008 example: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3692574 Charlie Weis takes active role in offense and play calling. Result: Irish lose. Charlie Weis decides to take lesser role in offense to focus on "team" aspect of coaching. Result: Irish lose. solution?.... Charlie Weis takes more active role in offense and playcalling. Even with the aid of the softest schedule of a major in the NCAA, the FUPA still couldn't manage to silence the doubters. What's worse, losing to Navy or losing the Syracuse the year after you lost to Navy? Great recruiter. Simply awful coach. Stay, for the love of comedy!

I think the amount of heat Weis is taking right now, the recruiting class this year is going to be damaged. And whatever year he gets the axe, its going to disrupt that recruiting class. So the ND AD can take the plunge this year and have only one damaged class or wait and have two. Also, if the AD really thinks that Weis is not the long term solution, they should fire him now. With Jimmah as a junior, there is a real likelihood that they win two more games next year. Then it gets harder to fire the big man. Does anyone recall what the annual payment from NBC to ND is? I'm sure that there is enough cash from the contract and a BCS bowl appearance to more than cover the Weisian sized buyout.

is good for a number of reasons. 1. We play ND and want them to suck. Weis provides a great deal of suck. 2. It's fucking hilarious. Admit it. You died laughing when he tipped over on the sideline and snapped every ligament in his knee like uncooked spaghetti. 3. He drains good talent. While this may seem like a negative because he steals good recruits out from under Michigan, hear me out. A. Weis doesn't develop this talent so it doesn't matter. His team will never measurably improve as long as he is at the helm. B. While we tend to focus on the kids he steals from us, remember that this siphons talent away from all the other midwest schools too, which the ND recruits obviously favor. If you give talent to other teams in the Big Ten, chances are the coaches will actually coach them. And that's a scary thought.

I get it already, he sucks ass. But the fact is, as fun as it was to watch Gerry Faust, you have to accept that it can't last forever. We got four, maybe five, years of Weis jokes... it's probably time to move on.

Weis is 2-2 against Michigan, so it's not like the guy can't beat us. So I'm not praying that he stays. I'm kind of indifferent. Brian Kelly is an interesting prospect. He is a solid hire, but he doesn't terrify me like everyone else. His record at CMU was 19-16 and he never beat a single BCS school. CMU's success in the MAC lately has as much to do with some of the other recently good teams like Miami, Toledo, and Marshall sucking badly as much as CMU actually being good. The MAC is a terrible conference, unlike the late '90s and early part of this decade where the MAC winner could probably win three or four games in the Big 10. As evidenced by the fact that CMU lost twice to a shitty Purdue team last year and lost again to them this year. He has shown competence at beating really bad teams, but so has Charlie Weis. What is Brian Kelly's signature win? Beating Pitt this year?

Kelly is a great offensive coach. Give him the talent ND has at the skill positions and I think they'd be tough. He has a strong D this year at UC, but that's with a lot of seniors (who Dantonio recruited). He is a great recruiter, though, and could do some great things at ND. Getting talented kids to come to UC can't be that easy. Anyone who's been to the campus knows what I'm talking about. It's just not that nice. As a UC grad, I'd like to see him stay because he's somehow made Bearcat football relevant. I also don't want him to go to ND b/c I have no doubt he'd be successful.

For this reason alone, I want Weis to stay: John Chironna often discovered [Weis] eating a Big Mac and French fries for breakfast, and drinking a tall soda for the caffeine blast. "This gets me ready to go," Weis would tell Chironna.

The word on Brian Kelly is that he's a good coach but just a complete asshole as a human being. Also, he supposedly doesn't care much as far as academics are concerned. This is from someone who would know what he's talking about. He did not want to see Kelly at Michigan.
