Charles Woodson weighs in on team after Peach Bowl loss

Submitted by Eyzwidopn on December 30th, 2018 at 3:13 PM

Michigan's very own Michelle McMahon interviews Charles Woodson post the Peach Bowl loss.  CW weighs in on what he feels the team/program needs to do going forward, is upfront about using the weapons the team has more and compares his first couple of seasons at Michigan with how this team/program is viewed now.  https://twitter.com/MichiganOnBTN/status/1079442190550601729  (Apologies, I couldn't figure out how to embed the video from a twitter link).

I agree with CW, everyone needs to demand greatness from themselves and others because the talent level is there to have great play-makers on both sides of the ball that can/will be difference makers in any game, but especially big games.  Thoughts on CW's take?

Charles seems like a good dude who loves Michigan. Consequently, I doubt he's going to express his unfiltered opinion openly. I'd be much more interested to hear what he thinks privately.

I respect his opinion. I also appreciate just how passionate he is about this program. He is one of those guys who is personally trying to will this program to become nationally elite.  And unlike some other former players, he can manage his emotions like a grown man.

Man, I love that, and it's so true. I think the coaches can do more schematically to help the offense, but players have to make plays in the big games, and when was the last time we had a player, step up and make a play?

21 points without context means shit. You must not have watched the game. There was never one second in that game where I was worried because the defense was in control. Offense opened it up when MSU tied it up. You can disagree with the strategy in that game, but it was an easy win because MSU couldn’t do anything on offense.

He pretty much echoed what we all have been screaming about with regards to using WRs more.

Note how he said players should demand excellence from the coaches too

He mentioned the players taking ownership and demanding excellence from their coaches multiple times. He talked about getting it right Sunday-Friday for it to go right on Saturday. He mentioned two specific issues in DB play which is related to coaching. I think Charles is in line with the fan base in expecting the coaches to do better. Said far more eloquently, but the thoughts are the same.

The notion that the WRs as a group are underutilized is a myth.  Patterson just finished a game with a 6.2 ypa and a 116 passer rating against a middle tier SEC defense.  Hard to argue that throwing more would have helped.  The bigger issue is OL and running game, which lacks any semblance of elite players.

Both DPJ and Collins had somewhere around ~40-45 catches for the season, each for ~600 yds.  FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON!!!  Black had nowhere near that amount.  That averages to only 3.5 catches/game through the season.

You really think they were not underutilized?  I don't...

Accurate. We all heard about 5 WR sets this offseason and we looked a lot like last year with a slightly better qb. I counted two Shea keeps into the third quarter. Its not like we are saving him for any games after this one. The coaching staff lacks creativity.

Thad, that's the issue though. I said this in another thread. We let the blogs and message boards get us gased up about what is going on behind closed doors, and then we never see it game day. All the stuff we heard about Jeter and the young LB's this week, and they didn't sniff the field. It comes from players and bloggers, but we never see it. Ex.. player x - We haven't even used half of the playbook yet, you'll see, and we never see anything different. Why can't we run a simple wheel route with Evans? I'm done believing anything will change, until I see it on the field.

Woodson is the man. Wish he was the coach. Imagine the recruits he could get...

Marcus Ray was right about Don Brown's scheme also. I took his opinion with a grain of salt at the time because the schematic details were over my head. But looking back - he was spot on.

Class act as always.

Really like his points about utilizing DPJ and Eubanks more, but I think he's on the money with situational football. It's downright embarrassing, IMO, that we still can't run a no-huddle offense and are this bad when it comes to playing uptempo on offense. It's the fourth year of Harbaugh's tenure and that's just sad, honestly. Watching us sit there and huddle and then waste time before snapping the ball against ND was infuriating because we might've had a chance to win had we actually managed the clock well.

One of my other, big takeaways from this season is Jim needs to improve clock management. Maybe that's part of delegating the offense to someone else, but to use his timeouts as poorly as he did in this game and to use such a slow, lackadaisical approach on offense when it's late in quarters and we need to score is just ridiculous. That should be one of the easier fixes, I think, but I'm still not very optimistic sadly.

Haha - I'm not Marcus. I'm just a dude from West Mich.

I think he was a bad ass safety tho. Liked some of his shows/stories with Jamie & Sam. He also told of all the times he f-ed up too.

How can he not brag up Charles. Maybe the best defensive player in the history of football.? Wtf...

Listen to Marcus break down Ds - he knows his stuff.

Anyway - the hate for a former player is a little over the top imo...

I'm not really sure if Woodson would be a good coach? I think with all of his experience he would be good.?

Marcus I think would field a top notch D also.

Pre game & half time speech would be epic if anything...lol

Man. What the hell is this? Things getting weirder by the day around here.

I get that everyone is upset that the team basically met all of our expectations pre-season (because 10 - 3 was high water mark in most preseason predictions exception those blowing sunshine). I also get the the way this team got to 10 - 3 has to be the most BPONE, soul destroying and awful journey for any of us as donors, ticket holders and fans more generally. It has been an awful time since late November.

That said, at what point would you link this to Harbaugh's love for Michigan? How? Why? The guy is an M grad, called his shot as a player vs. tOSU, came back and has done a credible job beating the teams he is supposed to beat. Not so much against rivals, in bowls etc.

Criticize the performance but certainly not his commitment.

I agree with him, too.  What I'd like to see is the players to have more fire to them.  I don't think they're not playing hard, but there's something missing.  Think about how Winovich plays.  That's what I mean by fire.  If we could clone him up and down both the offensive and defensive lines, or at least his attitude and pardon me for using this term, motor, we might start seeing the type of play and results we want.  (Might, being dependent on not coming out with the same game plan for every opponent.)

Utilizing our best players on offense more effectively MUST be the priority all offseason. We have 3 WRs who could be going in the first two rounds of the draft and would probably all be competing for the top WR in the country if they weren’t stealing receptions from each other and were used more. Additionally we have one of the best TEs in the draft. Despite this, we play slow as F*** and depend on the run game even when it’s not working at all. There are other ways to wear a defense down than running it all game. For being so smart when it comes to football, Harbaugh’s stubbornness is making him look like a buffoon.

I was there, yelling my fool head off! What did I see? I saw a team that fought their ass off. I saw a team that was out manned. I saw a team that made mistakes. I saw a team that was down two captains. I saw a fanbase that left early. Left me to put up with all that gator bullshit! This old man stood for my team, and let em know I'd be there yelling til I was dead! Who was with me? My Sparty Daughter, yelling her ass off! Things tend togo better for you if you catch the balls thrown your way! Changes? Dunno, I'm a Mechanic. Want to wish Chase a great career, and thank him for standing for us! Want to thank those Alumni that I met that stayed, and stood as well! God Bless you boys, and Go Blue!
