If you can't get the man in charge why not get the man calling the plays and coaching up the QB's. Baylor has ranked in the top 4 in total offense the last 4 seasons and was #1 last season and is presently #1 this season.

Why would somebody who actually shuns the spotlight be appropriate to head Michigan, a team that needs a commanding presence who's able to handle the relentless scrutiny and public demands required at Michigan? It's kind of a CEO position. This guy doesn't fit the bill.

Why would anyone want to come to this dumpster fire. Outside of the Harbaugh's and Miles who all have close personal connections to the University, no coach in their right mind would accept this position.

We all know that both Harbaugh's aren't coming here and Miles is at best an extremely remote possability. So other than those guys who is going to come here? Gundy? Sumlin? Peterson? Jones? All of those guys coach at position's that are at the very least on the same level of Michigan if not better. Michigan isn't a top 20 program anymore. We've fallen hard and fall. It's going to take a Tressel like hire to right this sinking ship

With Brandon still here, I agree with you.

WIth Brandon out, Michigan is a very attractive job: plenty of talent on the roster, good facilities, A2 is a great place to live, tradition and all that, ability to pay big $.

The top candidates may be less obvious this year, but I have to believe there are good coaches out there who would take the job, provided they wouldn't be working for a back-biting micromanager.

This is a ridiculous statement. We may not be in great shape right now, but let's keep things in perspective. We're not nearly in the hole that Penn State was after Sandusky and they were able to get not one, but two great coaches in O'Brian and Franklin.

Even if you don't take the history into account, Michigan is a top job just based on our facilities, salaries that we'll pay for a head coach and assistants, talent on board (at least based on stars), etc. The attractiveness of the job will also increase if Brandon leaves.

We may not be able to lure a coach from an elite program that can offer a lot of the same advantages, but that's a huge difference from a coach needing to be out of their mind to accept this position or that we'll need to take a complete flyer on a guy the way that OSU did with Tressel.

as a possible future Offensive Coordinator.

NO as a possible future Head Coach.  That writeup you linked gives me no indication he's ever been a HC and, from the description of his personality, little doubt he would be out of his comfort zone as HC.

Can Jon Gruden just decide to quit working for ESPN and come coach our team? Someone who undertands football, can develop young quarterbacks, and fire up a team. No? Dammit.. :(

If we're going to hire someone without head coaching experience (which... ok, I can probably live with that given the current dearth of available/realistic head coach options), why not look just down the road at Narduzzi??

are particularly bad with Narduzzi. He might jump back to MSU as soon as Dantonio steps down, perhaps right in the middle of another transition. Dantonio might retire early just out of spite or to become their AD. Only slightly joking about the spite. We could well be leaving our coaching situation in MSU's hands. If he happens to fail, the fact that we reached for an MSU guy will only add to the pain.

Rather than a coordinator, I'd rather see a Beilein type hire. An innovative coach with a lot of HC experience who has proven he knows how to run a program. I'd value that over experience at a power conference.

a future shitstorm we'll see on this Board will be the offensive philosphy of the new coach.  Any spread coach will immediately conjur memories of RichRod and any manball coach will......well, you get the idea.  And I don't mean this lightly.  While most of us claim to simply want a system that works, when the time comes many will retreat to the established corners.

I wasn't a fan of the Rich Rod hire when it happend but i think it was abandoned early. Im not defending his lack of recruiting defensive talent but i would have liked to have seen one more year. I still think dynamic offense's are the future, Auburn doesn't have a great defense but they have a dynamic offense. Ditto for Baylor, Oregon, Ok St.

Montgomery, Chad Morris, and Tom Herman all look like legit possibilities and good options...what's the board consensus on who would be the best option?  Herman has recruited here and has Texas ties (and also it would piss off OSU to no end)...I'm leaning that way if we go after an OC.

Don't want Narduzzi.  Not because he's MSU, because he has said things like "Our defense is 60 minutes of unnecessary roughness" and he's a huge douchebag.  I do want a great coach and he is that, but I also want somebody with class.  The two are not mutually exclusive.  Give me a Beilein over an Izzo any day of the week.

Encouraging dirty play (like what we saw from Will Gholston and others) is quite another.  THere are plenty of mentally tough coaches there who arent' boorish assholes like Nardouchey

but most people are not tied to specific defensive schemes.  We all want someone who values defense.  But there is defense and then again there is defense.  If you play a high octane offense with more possessions, the other team is simply going to score more points--but the defense might still be good given the offensive advantages.  The reality is that spread offenses (virtually) always result in higher scoring games across the board.

The Michigan basketball team is a decent example.  Some bemoan our lack of offensive rebounding (almost a certainty with small 4s) and aggressive defense, but Beilein runs a defense that fits his offense.  Beilein would rather stop the opponents fast breaks, stay out of foul trouble, create dribble-drive space and hit lots and lots of 3s.  It seems to work "okay" (I guess) and it has been spectacularly entertaining.

And that gets back to my original prediction--"there will be blood" (proverbially) spilt over the offensive scheme on this Board before it is over.

is Ohio State OC Tom Herman.

-The guy is a genius (he is a member of Mensa);

-He comes from the Urban Meyer coaching tree which includes Mullen and Strong;

-His scheming and play calling are excellent;

-He is a very good recruiter (2013 Rivals.com Big Ten Recruiter of the Year and national Top 25 recruiter);

- He would be a young HC. f he works out, Michigan could be set for 20+ years;

-Getting him takes away from Ohio State...

I like the idea of Tom Herman...but one candidate I never hear of is Hue Jackson, current OC with the Bengals.  The guy was successful at Oakland...and that folks is not easy!!  He has spent many years as a college coach at some very fine programs out west: USC, Arizona State, Cal, Pacific, CSF as well as stints with multiple NFL teams.  His offensives have been outstanding at most of his stops...while HC at Oakland his team finished 6th in the NFL in scoring...that is a feat people!  The guy seems to have a very solid background, has been a successful HC, has had multiple stops in the NFL and in college football at storied programs and would make a solid HC candidate for a college program.

To be honest, I don't want to think aboutf another head coaching candidate until Jim Harbaugh officially says no.  Then I'll worry about it.  Right now, if this is really going to happen, Harbaugh HAS to be the #1 choice and they should be throwing money at him to get him to come here.
