CBS Bias?

Submitted by nuck on

Just wondering if anyone feels like CBS is a little pro-SEC in its coverage. Specifically I bring up today's highlight package for the UM/BG game. The highlights they showed were Denard's 2 yd TD run as well as his injury without showing his amazing 47 yd TD run. Then on the stats page they made no mention of his stats or the great job he did in such limited playing time choosing instead to show Tate's #s.

For the nation's heisman trophy leader (depending on who you ask) this seems very peculiar unless they are trying to minimize his exposure in hopes of swaying voters to not vote for him (out of sight, out of mind).

Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but in '06 they did a pretty good job of campaigning for Florida over Michigan for the #2 ranking during the SEC championship game so it's hard for me to pass it off as just coincidence.

I agree.  People should not look past the fact that CBS shows, almost exclusively, SEC games.  It would be in their best interests to promote the product that they put on display every weekend.  Is it annoying for Big Ten fans?  Sure.  However, I completely understand and don't fault them for doing that.  Such is life in business.

I have to say that I am shocked that a national media outlet would show an affinity for the Southeastern Conference.

That being said, I also found it extremely annoying.

CBS was showing an SEC game.  Sure it had national appeal, but most viewers were probably SEC fans tuning in to watch two SEC teams slug it out.  They probably don't care about Denard or his ESS EEE SEE speed, and were not likely to pull for him to win the heisman anyway.  Not the most rational fanbases down south.

which highlights CBS decides to show?  All the Heisman voters will see the important replays several times on ESPN, etc., and they will have ALL the stats for the year when it comes time to vote.  CBS can show Pryor yanking off for all I care...if Denard continues to excel in the Big Ten, the truth will set him free.

Nobody puts DILITHIUM in a corner.

i was going to say... isn't it the SEC on CBS? like, isn't that their entire CFB programming?

who cares... even if Denard stays in the game, what he does against BGSU means nothing in the heisman race. let's talk after he piles 314 on OSU, knocking them out of the Nat'l Champ Game.

In all fairness, I was watching ESPS (ABC) and they gave Denard's stats and did say that these were all in only 9 minutes of play. The coverage on ESPN was fair. If Denard had played more minutes and had some way out stats, he would have gotten more coverage.

I love that it is clear that Denard (and RR) seem to be more focused on the accomplished of the team than any individual statistics or awards.

After all, Griese made the Michigan game all about Michigan on ESPN2 today.  It probably wasn't all that fair to BGSU, but I loved it.  It sorta makes up for having to watch MIchigan against ND on NBC every other year.  Besides, Michigan is a lot more of a story than BGSU, so it was well-deserved.

I feel like the Big Ten Network is very objective and critical of Big Ten teams when they are not playing well. They do tend to play up the talent of the lower end of the Big Ten but I love that network.

They pay big bucks to carry SEC games, of course they're biased for the SEC.

On a similar note, I watched local Detroit TV news last night at 11 pm, they showed garden variety Michigan highlights, same thing everyone else ran.  But then they ran MSU highlights, big story about Dantonio's absence, KIRK COUSINS HAD 280 YARDS PASSING AND MSU HAD MORE THAN 500 YARDS IN TOTAL OFFENSE!!!!! (against Baby Seal U).  No mention of course that Michigan had 721 yards of total offense (school record against a D-1A team), but whatever.

I'm always sensitive to how media outlets cover Michigan post-game vs. other teams. Face it, there's a lot of maize and blue envy built up over the past 50 years nationwide.  So if that's what we have to deal with because we're winning, I'm ok with that.

CBS has a contract with the SEC, it's pretty obvious they are biased towards the conference.

It's also generally the same way with ABC telecasts and their bias towards Big Ten/Boise/non-SEC teams.
