Catching Up With Hoke's Assistants

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

According to the current rankings, here's how some of Hoke's assistants are doing at their current jobs. Nuss has the best team, but it looks like it might not be because of his offense.

Doug Nussmeier (Florida OC) - No. 58 offense, No. 35 passing, No. 90 rushing; team is 5-0

Al Borges (San Jose State OC) - No. 32 offense, No. 43 passing, No. 28 rushing; team is 2-3

Dan Ferrigno (San Jose State special teams) - No. 112 FGs, No. 70 punting, No. 100 kickoff returns; team is 2-3

Darrell Funk (Akron OL) - No. 87 offense, No. 76 rushing; team is 2-3

Jeff Hecklinski (Colorado State passing game coordinator) - No. 30 passing; team is 2-3

Curt Mallory (Wyoming secondary) - No. 55 pass defense; team is 0-5

Roy Manning (Washington State outside LBs) - No. 41 defense, No. 53 pass defense, No. 41 rush defense; team is 2-2

Mark Smith (Florida Tech DL) - Team is in Division II, currently has a 2-3 record

You obviously don't know too much about offensive coordinating. Drevno exclusively drinks double-IPAs and rare sour beers, led USD to one of their best offensive seasons ever, and is rapidly turning around the Michigan O despite obvious personal deficiencies.

Thanks to the Spanish-language cognate, I know immediately what you mean with this word. The only place I could find its existence verified (I wanted to investigate the etymology, among other things) was here, under a subsection ("page," if you will) named "sesquipedalia." (No etymology provided.) My searches at Webster, Cambridge, McMillan and others failed, but offered up the following words as spelling corrections: cervical, Frisian, perversion and others. Vocabulary.com went right ahead and gave me the definition of "surficial" without asking if there was any mistake. One way or the other, I think you are out in front of the crowd with this one.

Borges put Denard under center every game until we were down by 10, if he and Dave Brandon were both drowning I would have a hard decision if I only had one life preserver to throw (and I REALY hate Dave Brandon).

This is about the third fat joke i've read in the last hour, none of which were remotely funny.  Not sure when these boards transitioned from Michigan sports to this, but it's disgusting that I find myself fraternizing with such insecure and childish people.

I'm not disputing the fact that our country is terribly unhealthy. I just don't understand the need to disparage others to make themselves feel better. I come here to discuss Michigan sports, not boost my ego at the expense of others. Lastly, poking fun at someone that is obviously making a commitment to bettering themselves and their physical well being is even more reprehensible.

They all seemed like good guys and I understand why guys like Hoke (and Rich Rod) "keep the band together". However, I find Harbaugh's process of finding quality and "hungry" coaches from all over refreshing after Rich Rod's "bros before actually defensive coaches" and Hoke's "weeeeeeellllll we had a great year at Ball State that one year and he and his wife have been part of my potluck for 20 years so I am comfortable with him like the NFL punt" strategies of staffing.

I dont care how well these guys are doing, the fact that they couldnt develop 4&5* stars here or put together a game plan that actually worked, it shows to me that they are as good as the players make them look. Real coaches take whats given to them and squeeze as much talent as possible from them and use bases on the teams needs..hence 2015 team. Will see how good these guys are by the end of the season.

Look at how well the defensive line and especially, the secondary is playing this year.  The new coaching staff has taught the defensive backs tight coverage and finally, after many years, how to play the ball.  Hoke and Co. did a decent job with the defense, but the difference this year is obvious.

Maybe they did a good job developing the defense, but when you defensive backs coach never played the position or coached the position, my eyes roll. At a program known for its football and with deep pockets, you go out and hire someone with expertise and experience.

Posts like this remind me of the guy who always talks about his ex...a girl we all knew he settled for and could have done way better...and you just want to slap him and tell him to "shut the hell up and drink your beer". The guy got the girl of his dreams now and needs to let that shit go.

Get this guy a beer and shut him up.

It's still rather interesting that a few folks who at least passed this way - through Ann Arbor - now have found themselves at San Jose State, even if totally unintentionally. In addition to Borges and Ferrigno, Greg Robinson and Adam Stenavich are out there now, if memory serves (Borges and Robinson are Califiornia natives, I believe, so maybe it is a bit of a homecoming).

The OP has Hecklinski's info wrong.

Hecklinski is the passing game coordinator at Colorado State-Pueblo, not THE Colorado State (FBS). Colorado State-Pueblo is Division II (not FCS). Not sure why he went that route. Nothing wrong with it, but it seems like an odd career move for a coach in his prime years coming off a job at Michigan.
