Guess this means Harbaugh is coming back.
Just don't hire Bo Pelini.
December 22nd, 2020 at 6:30 PM ^
Yes 2 year extension.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
Necessary but still a Dude IMO.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:11 PM ^
When he had the horses, he could stop ANYONE.
When he didn't, he wouldn't adjust, and would get smoked.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
ANYONE....except OSU.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
Well, he was able to stop them in 2016, but they got a defensive TD, and 2 OTs, and JT was short and so on and so on....
No doubt he needed to go now, but he was the architect of three of the best defenses I have ever seen UM field, put more than a dozen dudes into the NFL and had us among the nation's elite early in his tenure including a year AT #1. I will remember him mostly fondly.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:24 PM ^
Yes, yes, yes everything can be explained and rationalized. I bet you are not interested in typing the novel required to justify/explain:
2017: OSU scored 31
2018: OSU scored 62
2019: OSU scored 56
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:29 PM ^
Ryan Day got hired and had his playbook. And he might just be too old and too stuck in his own ways to adapt and change. Day might have ended his career.
December 22nd, 2020 at 6:03 PM ^
Don Brown has a hell of a track record. If you take out the OSU disasters it's a resume most DC's would take. I doubt he has a tough time finding another job.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
Florida just scored 46 points on Bama. Giving up 31 points is not bad. 62 and 56 OTOH...
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:11 PM ^
Florida had an offense scoring points and keeping the ball away from Alabama, something Brown's defense never had. There is no chance in hell that Michigan gives up 62 and 56 if the offense is keeping the ball and scoring as much as OSU was.
Those defenses still weren't good enough, but don't be stupid about it.
December 22nd, 2020 at 10:23 PM ^
In 2019, OSU ran 77 plays. That’s a normal amount. In 2018, OSU had the ball for 24:36. The Michigan offense kept the ball for 35:24. Oh those stubborn facts.
December 23rd, 2020 at 12:21 AM ^
The 2017 game wasn’t bad. 124 passing yards surrendered, and about 4.7 YPC, very respectable vs OSU. Oh if only Metellus had held on to the sure pick 6, we’d have been up 21-0
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
Are you under the impression that holding one of the best teams/offenses in the nation to 31 points is bad in college football?
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:03 PM ^
And with about 3 minutes left in the game they had 24. Our D gave O’Korn & Co. a chance to drive down and win it for us, but he promptly airmailed an interception.
December 22nd, 2020 at 8:24 PM ^
Right, what do people expect?? Michigan doesn’t let them cross midfield?? 31 points isn’t bad all against a team loaded with NFL talent. How about looking at Michigan’s offense in that game. Harbaugh has to land a QB recruit that doesn’t transfer. Harbaugh has to be able to develop a QB to win. Every team in the college playoffs has an NFL QB with Book being the only suspect guy. QB’s win in college football. Usually when their defense gives up 31the good ones find a way to get 32.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:34 PM ^
Correct, the defense didn't perform but on the other hand, I recall a large number of penalties and dropped passes and few first downs from the offense. It was a team and head coach issue as much or more than the defense. It seems that OSU started in great field position a lot.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:45 PM ^
And just to be clear, we're going to go ahead and blame him for OSU's defensive touchdowns and such, right? It was bad, it wasn't quite as bad as those final numbers.
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:15 PM ^
You sir, are the soul of magnanimity.
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:21 PM ^
No need to beat a dead horse smh
December 22nd, 2020 at 7:13 PM ^
In 2019 and 2020 OSU averaged 28 points, well below the 2017/2018 average.
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:05 PM ^
Must have been born in 1998 or later
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:36 PM ^
MUCH earlier than that, I can unfortunately confirm. But I don't think it's even too hot of a take to say that our 2016 defense was the best at Michigan post-1997.
December 22nd, 2020 at 6:16 PM ^
Post Bo
1997 #1
2016 #2
2006 #3
2017 #4

Are you being serious? The architect of 3 of the best defenses you've ever seen? Were you born in 2000? Don Brown's defenses had impressive stats beating up on bad Big10 offenses. 2016 OSU offensively is nowhere near what they've been the past couple years. They couldn't pass the ball very well back then. I'm not sure what you base a great defense on, but i'm not going to base it on the FACT that they dominated inferior teams, and gave up lots of points and yardage to any offense with real skill. Look at 2016, end of the OSU game and defense can't stop them. Say what you want about the spot, the game was lost when overrated(Yes I said it) Peppers couldn't tackle the RB in the backfield on the play before. Then the bowl game against FSU, defense gets a stop and Michigan wins the game....Couldn't do it. Not only that but they gave up 30+ points to the only good offenses they saw that year. You can have stats, i'll take a Michigan defense that actually stopped teams when it mattered and for a championship. How many times under Don Clown did we have to see our slow footed safety in the slot in man coverage against guys like KJ Hamler? Sorry, Don doesn't get credit for inheriting Hoke's defensive players. In fact, considering how well they were playing and shutting down OSU for 3 quarters in 2016, i'd say it was a complete and utter collapse in the 4th quarter and OTs. Can someone tell me exactly what made Don Brown's defense "great" for 3 of the years he was here? Was it their ability to keep offensive standouts like Rutgers, Northwestern, Illinois etc to single digits? 2016's defense could not FINISH, so they aren't great. Sure, they had quite a few draft picks from that defense but most were in the later rounds.
December 23rd, 2020 at 10:48 AM ^
Well, he was able to stop them in 2016, but they got a defensive TD, and 2 OTs, and JT was short and so on and so on....
2016 - 4th Quarter - Michigan leading 17 - 14. Ohio State starts on their own 18 yard line with 5:31 to play.
Ohio State was able to drive to the Michigan 5 yard line and kicked the game tying field goal with one second to go. Had Brown's defense gotten a stop on that drive, Michigan wins and they aren't worried about the spot.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
And Rocky Lombardi
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
Still took too many unnecessary risks when he had the horses. Top tier coaches could exploit it.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:45 PM ^
Watching Don Brown leave a CB on an island to get burned on 3rd and 30 was awe inspiring.
He did have his high points though for sure. Wishing the Dude well.
December 22nd, 2020 at 9:32 PM ^
Leaving Hill 1 on 1 on something like 3rd and 24 with no safety help in the 3rd quarter of the 2019 Iowa game was, well, fun.
I was holding my 2 day old son and jumped out of the chair in the hospital room in disbelief.
Mother-in-law insisted on relieving me of baby holding duties until the end of the game.
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:19 PM ^
Well said - Don Brown's tenure in a nutshell.
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:21 PM ^
Need to make adjustments, if yo can’t get to the QB, the press defense doesn’t work
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
So this can only mean they’re retaining Harbaugh right? Why let him fire an assistant if they’re going to fire Jim anyway?
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:13 PM ^
Anyone acting like Jim was leaving after signing day is delusional
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:24 PM ^
Or a victim of emotional abuse by this program repeatedly making self destructive decisions.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:29 PM ^
I'm so sorry this happened to you.
December 22nd, 2020 at 6:22 PM ^
Thoughts and prayers?
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:11 PM ^
While I understand the sentiment, it is even more malfeasance (on the part of both Jim and Warde) to not sign and announce the damn contract. While our recruiting class was fine given the uncertainty, there was certainly an opportunity to make it better. Similarly, looking for a new defensive coordinator before your head coach signs a contract is not particularly helpful.
While both sides may want to come to a deal and both sides may be comfortable taking actions consistent with believing that they will come to a deal, not having a deal suggests there is actually some sticking point. Little sticking points that linger for a long time in any deal can start to become bigger and bigger.
If there is no sticking point, why haven’t they just announced the deal?
December 22nd, 2020 at 7:34 PM ^
It is because the NFL season isn't over. He will see what is offered and decide then. My guess is the Lions or Chargers. Vacation in California...yeah ok.
December 23rd, 2020 at 8:49 AM ^
If you can fire existing DC with current situation, you can certainly agree to terms (perhaps without being official or publicly announcing) under to same conditions.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:14 PM ^
I thought it was common knowledge that Jim was staying. Didn’t you believe all the talk?
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:17 PM ^
Maybe he's just giving Don Brown a head start.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
Jim Harbaugh is so pissed that he, himself, is getting fired and blames Don Brown so he fired Don Brown while he was on vacation in California just so he can say he fired Don Brown!!! That will teach him a lesson!
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:14 PM ^
Harbaugh mailed Don Brown a Christmas card with “you’re fired” in it.
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:26 PM ^
Yes it means JH is staying
December 22nd, 2020 at 4:37 PM ^
It only took six smart ass comments for Sarto to get an answer. At least we're making a progress now LOL!
