Breaking: Vance Bedford does not like mushrooms. Content after the jump
Some fun stuff from Vance and Sam:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfofTZKYRuU
5:00 Re: Mason Graham. “He’s gonna leave early….special, special player.” YouMayRememberMe…: Rob Renes.
7:00 Charles Woodson acquitted himself well back in the day. Shocking but true.
8:30 Will Johnson: “So far, he’s done a good job…I like what I see.”
11:00 Can’t play man-to-man against Ohio State, so… Creative scheme a must.
13:30 “If I’m an opponent, I’m going up-tempo against Michigan right now.”
17:30 “Get JJ on the perimeter…just don’t call a deep route to any guy” Praises Chris Carter…ugh…
24:00 Concern re: Ohio State: “If they score on us quick…” Can we play from behind? “Get to C.J. Stroud early and often!”
28:00 Gemon as a dime
29:00 Re: Problems with Turner. “He is doing some good things…he has all the tools in the world….”
31:50 “I’m not worried about the deep routes….Heavy, heavy play-action pass”
32:30 Back to OSU. “Gotta hit that quarterback…{and} we’ll win that ballgame”
35:00 Urban learned from Woody. Things are different at OSU now. Now it’s throw first, run second.
They go on for another half hour, but the above should be enough to decide whether to invest some time.

And serve the mushrooms on the side when you bring Vance his steak. That's at the start of the program.

Not entirely sure you learned your lesson from yesterday but at least now I know what to expect.

"Not entirely sure you learned your lesson from yesterday but at least now I know what to expect."
Yes, lesson learned. Trying to have a little fun, toned-down, on a Wednesday when we are all a bit tense about what the next ten days will bring. I appreciated the feedback yesterday. Thank you.
Vance is a good guy, and I think many who visit here will enjoy listening to him when they get some down time.

i hate mushrooms
except the magic ones. they're awesome. but they taste bad.

eat them with peanut butter...that's what a friend told me once.

A "friend"...right.

Maybe it was Vince Bedford, whoever the heck he is.

a hand full of potato chips also works
or grind them up and put them into those gelatin capsules you get from GNC or wherever (optimal)

Or with chocolate. Or both

Vance is the best-and I mean that.

We've only held OSU to under 30 points twice since Carr retired. I think to win the Game we need to score in the mid 30's, which means no missed opportunities in the Red Zone. Can't settle for Field Goals.

Notre Dame and Northwestern held them to 21 this year. Just saying ...
November 16th, 2022 at 3:09 PM ^
The Ohio team hasn't faced anything like us. And their delusions that they are tougher this year will only make it sting more when they encounter the reality that they're not.

The Michigan team hasn't faced anything like OSU. And our delusions that they are weaker this year will only make it sting more when we encounter the reality that they're not.
November 16th, 2022 at 7:51 PM ^
Maybe. OSU's FEI d-line is rated in the high teen's this year while about 50 last year. However, they are rated about the same as PSU this year.
November 16th, 2022 at 3:41 PM ^
Notre Dame (In the first game of the season) and Northwestern + The Weather held them to 21 this year.
FTFY
Late season OSU is always more dangerous than early season OSU. Also it's The Game. If we hold them to 21 I'll be goddamn ecstatic. Since 2010, they've scored 30 or more in all but two of the games, 40 or more in 5 of the games. That said, your point is well taken. They may not be a fully weaponized OSU team of the past. Anything under 35 is good vs these guys, and if we're keeping them in the 20s, I think we win it.
November 16th, 2022 at 3:46 PM ^
21-10 in 2009, 26-21 in 2012, and of course 42-27 is three
Plus I give the defense a lot of credit for 2016 (17 pts allowed in regulation, 14 of those were the offense's fault) and 2017 (forced a lot of punts but no help from the offense, wore down late)
But I agree with your point generally.
November 16th, 2022 at 4:51 PM ^
yeah 2016 Ohio St probably would've scored like 6 points all things being equal which of course we know they were not

Comparing Graham to Renes (a fine player, but not *great*) might be a little bit of an insult very soon.
If OSU scores "quick," we still get the ball back, right? Time of scoring drive is a separate issue from being behind. That will happen only if Michigan doesn't score.
November 16th, 2022 at 1:46 PM ^
rob renes was a team captain, all-american, and academic all-american.
he was, in fact, a great player.
November 16th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
Lots of guys, especially in the past, made All American teams without being near the best at their position nationally. If you go back to the '90s, linebacker Erick Anderson is a good example. He got there mostly because he made a ton of tackles when fed ball carriers by Michigan's scheme. (Good for him. Not everyone would've made the tackles.)
Being a captain and academic All-American are significant achievements but beside the point here.
Renes was a 7th-round draft pick in 2000. It's early, but Graham is tracking to be much better than that. My point (which I could've maybe made more elegantly) is that Graham is shaping up to be better than Renes was.
November 16th, 2022 at 2:47 PM ^
"lots of guys, especially in the past" (but also now) get drafted in the first round "without being anywhere near the best at their position," too. being highly drafted and being an actually great player are related, but not exclusively so. you can be one but not the other.

A fine non sequitur.
I think Blue Heron clarified his point. Draft busts are irrelevant to the conversation. And people who turn out to be great in the NFL despite a low draft position, well, that was not Rob Renes, now was it.
November 16th, 2022 at 6:27 PM ^
Renes had to be much smaller than Graham is. My recollection of Renes was smaller but more agile. Relied on his wrestling skills to get by opponents. Graham is like Glasgow but probably much better technique relative to Fr Glasgow.

So, with Indiana offense caveats... going fast lends itself to two things against us. possibly quick scoring drives as we struggle to keep pace - a fair criticism.. but also, quick drives, that then let us methodically drive down and wear out the opponents defense...
Indiana does not equal osu, but the caveat applies if we can get their offense off the field a few times quickly.
I dont know if we'll get to the QB early. We usually pour it on later in the game. Might have to adjust philosophy early to shake stroud, put some doubt in his head, and avoid giving him time to pick us apart.
November 16th, 2022 at 3:33 PM ^
One of the things Michigan has going for it, however, is the ability to grind out long, boring drives and dominate the clock. I would think that, regardless of how fast OSU scores, we need to at least attempt to do exactly what has been working to limit their opportunities for such quick strikes.
November 17th, 2022 at 6:59 AM ^
Pressure 1st down and limit their success. This will keep OSU from up tempo. [Vance Bedford]
November 16th, 2022 at 1:49 PM ^
If they score on us quick can we play from behind
I keep seeing this but people have to understand its alternating possessions. Its not winners out.
If OSU scores play your game. If they score again play your game. If they score again… welp its your first 3 drives that were the problem not your next drive.
Play your game.
November 16th, 2022 at 2:41 PM ^
Thank you.
Teams get dragged into "track meets" or "rock fights" only if they get away from their own style.
November 16th, 2022 at 4:54 PM ^
I do think there is something to making Ohio St put together a drive. Last year when they had to repeatedly put together plays they were certainly capable but not quite as machine-like as some other aspects of the offense when they got to the 8th play of the drive
November 16th, 2022 at 8:05 PM ^
Exactly.
November 16th, 2022 at 11:17 PM ^
Well, that might apply to the first few drives, but if once you get past that and you’re down big, it doesn’t make much sense to play the same clock-killing ball-control offense, since it would be ideal to maximize the amount of possessions. We would have to balance what we’re good at with what is most likely to get us down the field ASAP.
