Brandon Moore receives the honor of wearing #87

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Congrats to Brandon Moore (didn't play today due to being dinged up) on receiving the honor of representing the newest Michigan Football Legend, Ron Kramer. He will be the first Michigan player in 56 years to suit up with the #87 on his jersey.

Due to my strict self-anti technology policy during Michigan games, I had no way of knowing who was going to wear #87 for today. Nobody on BTN mentioned it like the fools that they are despite showing clips of the pregame ceremony. At halftime when the game was out of hand, I went on MGoBlue and it finally made sense. My pick for it was Devin Funchess. I think he'll get it next year.

Official MGoBlue release-

The University of Michigan Department of Athletics officially recognized Ron Kramer (1954-56) as a Michigan Football Legend today (Saturday, Sept. 15) during a pregame ceremony at the Michigan-Massachusetts football game.

Fifth-year senior tight end Brandon Moore (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) will wear the No. 87 jersey for the remainder of the season, switching from No. 89. A patch over the left upper chest will be affixed to the No. 87 jersey worn by Moore and all other future players donning Kramer's jersey number.

"I didn't know why Coach Hoke wanted to see me in his office, but when he asked me if I would like to wear Ron Kramer's No. 87 jersey I couldn't believe it," said Moore. "When you think of the history and tradition of this program and some of the great players like Ron Kramer, to carry on that legacy, that responsibility, is humbling. It's an honor to wear No. 87."

Kramer was a two-time consensus All-American (1955-56) and a three-time All-Big Ten first team selection (1954-56). He was a standout two-way player at offensive and defensive end, and also saw time at running back, quarterback, kicker and receiver. The former Green Bay Packers All-Pro tight end was a nine-time letterman in three sports at Michigan: football, basketball and track. Kramer led the Wolverines in scoring for two seasons on the gridiron while doing the same in basketball.

I think it's more likely Butt gets it than Funchess.  I think Hoke said he wants to start giving them out to freshman as normal numbers and then the players have to play up to the expectation to keep it

So?  The guys we're honoring are the best of the best.  Given this, the odds are that almost all of the players who wear their numbers won't be able to match their performance.  As long as a kid gives it his best on the field and in the classroom, he's doing enough to honor the jersey IMO.

I figured Hoke would give it to the senior. No problem with that. It'll sure be interesting to see who gets it next year, but I have Funchess as a shoe-in.

If the player transfers, then there is no issue, because he won't be on the team.

If the player gets in trouble, then it's up to the coach.  He could decide to strip him of the Legends jersey if he sees fit, I suppose, but I don't know if that would happen.

I don't see what is so complicated about this.  The Legends patch honors the former player who wore that number.  It does not imply that the current player wearing that jersey is a legend in his own right.  No one is actually suggesting that Junior Hemingway or Roy Roundtree is as good as Desmond Howard.

Am I alone in thinking that this shouldn't be a matter of "Oh, looks like number XX graduated... who do we have coming in as a freshman?"
