Bowl Substitution: CMU now playing Wazzu in Sun Bowl

Submitted by Hotel Putingrad on December 27th, 2021 at 9:18 PM

Boise State's Covid issues have kept them from traveling to Arizona for the Barstool Sports Bowl.

CMU was already down there, so they'll now just bus over to El Paso to take Miami's spot in the Sun Bowl.

Other game details remain the same.

here is the espn link on the substitution:

summary here: Both teams lost opponents to COVID-19 issues. Miami withdrew from the Sun Bowl on Sunday, sending the bowl scrambling for an opponent for the Cougars. That spot was filled by the Chippewas after their scheduled opponent, Boise Statewithdrew from the Barstool Arizona Bowl on Monday.

According to SI, 13x difference in the payouts.  $4.55 million for Sun Bowl vs $350K for Arizona Bowl.  That's 6x ($750K) - 9x ($500K) what CMU would get for playing a Power 5 team during the regular season plus they get national exposure on a game televised on CBS.

CMU has a lot of leverage.  If they didn't agree to play in the Sun Bowl, CBS will lose a lot of advertising dollars plus it will have a hole in their TV schedule.  CBS needs CMU more than CMU needs the Sun Bowl.  Hope the CMU negotiators realized this before agreeing to play in the Sun Bowl.

I wasn't going to watch this but now I am.  I know this is serious stuff but it is also a ton of fun for fans to see their team play all of the sudden.  I would love to see some teams go at it if I had my pick.  They should have a fan bowl that is decided on a Monday for the following Friday every year.  I would like to see some of the military schools take on a Power 5 school with no real notice.

So question - does CMU stand a chance in this game, or will it be similar to a payday game early in the season (not one against MSU)?  I haven't paid much attention to either CMU or WSU this year, so I don't know anything about this matchup...

On a pure talent on the field standpoint, CMU is a decided underdog but WSU had to fire many of their coaches (including head coach) because of COVID-protocol non-compliance earlier this season and smaller bowl games often come down to just who cares more so it’s not out of the realm of possibility CMU wins.

But the most likely outcome is Wazzu just pastes them, yeah.

Damn, whoever the guy is who was involved in the role of Director of Player Personnel has this team full of talent and in a great position going forward. Wish we could hire a guy like that after losing Courtney Morgan!
