Bill Martin Reminisces & Provides a Nice Bo Vignette

Submitted by MGoShoe on

At MGoBlue.com, Bill Martin reminisces about his time as athletics director highlighting some of his key moments including the field hockey and softball national championships, having the Michigan football caravan pulled over by the police after the UCLA game so that a couple of folks who missed the bus could get on [read it for who], and significantly, this vignette of his last conversation with Bo:

The last time I was with Bo was on a Wednesday evening practice right before the big Michigan/Ohio State game, two days before he passed away. It was cold and dark and we were sitting in the end zone while the team was practicing. We talked about where we would be for Thanksgiving and what we'd have for dinner. It led to a discussion on what were better -- fresh or canned cranberries...

Bo's opinion on cranberries ruled the day, but it's how he felt about the Michigan Stadium expansion project that puts a fresh perspective on Saturday's stadium rededication - especially as it relates to the man most responsible for its conception, approval and completion: Bill Martin.

I fondly remember Coach Bo as he was a great mentor to me, and while he preferred the canned variety, I must say that I find fresh cranberries to be tremendous.

To me, canned and fresh cranberry sauce serve different purposes. Canned cranberry sauce has that thicker texture that can be spread, while fresh cranberry sauce is lumpy and mixes better with dark meat's looser texture. Now, for sandwiches, the canned stuff is great because you can cut a slice off and slap it on just like cheese.

Oh, yeah, Bo. Sure wish he were still around, he'd be proud of these players.

He was sitting on a stool and I was standing and it was cold and the lights were on the field. I told Bo I had to go and he stood up, grabbed my arm and said, "Martin, you get that stadium project done and if you need any help, call me. Have a happy Thanksgiving."

And to think that that dipshit, Fielding Yost III, thought he knew better.  I'm sad that Bo isn't here to enjoy it, but I'm glad it got done.

...over the last few years, Bill did think of Bo many times when he needed some help on issues associated with the stadium renovation project.  How fortunate Michigan has been to have had the visionary leadership of ADs like Yost, Crisler, Canham, Bo, Martin and now Brandon.  And we continue to reap the benefits of their vision, leadership and hard work.

It is truly, great to be a Michigan Wolverine.
