BBrown: Tom Brady Question for the board...

Submitted by Brandon Brown on
After watching the clip of Brady's speech to the team I started to try and think of another NFL player that brings as much to the table as he does. When it comes to his backstory, NFL accolades, endorsements, current relevance to college-aged kids, level of intelligence, delivery, supermodel wife, etc...is there any other NFL player that can match his overall resumé if brought in to speak to his alma mater???

I don't mean to be annoyingly contrarian, but I am also quite serious. Brady leaving Moynahan just as she became pregnant and beginning to date Bundchen the same month is a significant minus as far as his accolades are concerned. Sure, currently a variety of "family models" are tolerated, but leaving his baby like that is a detraction to his credibility of being an all-around potential Leader Of Men.

How do you know he isn't still helping to raise the kid? How do you know what their relationship was like and is like now? How do you know that he knew she was pregnant when he left her? How do you go on like you know anything about a celebrity relationship gleamed from the gossip rags and TV shows like "The Insider" and TMZ? You don't.

Totally agree.

Also, do you know that Tom is very active in his kid's life, and that the kid spends a ton of time with Tom and Gisele.

Another also - how do you know that the break-up was Tom's doing, or even if it was, that it was not the result of something that his then girlfriend did?  Perhaps she cheated?  Perhaps she is not a very nice person?  Perhaps she roots for Ohio?  Who knows, but there are tons of reasons that Tom and his then girlfried could have broken up.  Also, assuming that he knew she was pregnant and that he did the breaking up, would it be better for him to stay with someone he does not have feelings for out of obligation?  That's not doing him, the girlfriend or the kid any favors.

A picture of Tom with both of his sons.  It's well known that he's been a part of his first son's life since the beginning, and both sons are raised as true brothers, the first being an integral part of his family with Giselle.

from an article about Brady & fatherhood in BostonHerald.com:

Jack is Brady’s son with actress Bridget Moynahan, while Bundchen and Brady produced Benjamin. The three-time Super Bowl winner paused when asked if either kid was like the old man. “Hmm, they’re very different boys,” Brady said, “but they’re both very loving, and fun to be around. And stubborn. That’s probably what they get from me.”

And to give Bridget equal time (from People, of course):

... she adds that the blended family is going well. "My son has two loving parents and an extended family, whether it's cousins or stepmothers or boyfriends. My son is surrounded by love."

She also says that she didn't find out she was pregnant until after she and Brady broke up.  So it seems they're both being mature adults and thinking first of the welfare of their unexpected son.

Good points by all regarding the complexity of this sort of stuff being so huge that one truly can't condemn Brady just based on the bits of his personal life that seep into the news. However, my original comment did not claim he could never coach or be a role model, nor that he is a worthless scumbag. I loved his speech, loved the Brady 6 documentary, loved the Moving the Chains book on his success. To interrupt a bit of hagiography with a criticism certainly should not rustle feathers so greatly. Without touching politics/religion/other items that are rightly separated from this discussion board, I stand by my assertion that family and romantic situations do not simply happen to one, and are part of one's overall merits and demerits. Brady has obviously made the best of the whole thing anyway. Just some food for thought!

Was great and all but he retired 15 years ago. Players won't connect as much with someone who hasn't played since they were 4-5 years old. They see Brady every week on TV. Chances are they've seen compete in Super Bowls, seen his hot wife and know about his uggs.

Besides Madden, has Sanders don't anything relevant in the past 10 years?

Leon Hall, Marlin Jackson and a long list of great DB's came to Michigan because of Charles.  And he's done far more for the program in his time and effort.  Brady has more star power but Woodson is the ultimate Michigan Man!

A lot of great names have been mentioned but Brady's in a class by himself as an ambassador for the program.  Desmond and Charles are close when it comes to Michigan icons but neither has the global notoriety or non-football cachet that Brady has.

When considering non-Michigan athletes, I was surprised how little competition there actually was...  I think you have to combine hall of fame talent, good off-field reputation, non-football fan name recognition and having played at one of the iconic college programs to qualify and there's not many who check all the boxes.  Joe Montana (and possibly Peyton, depending on how you view the Tennessess program) are the only ones I can think of.
