BBall Recruiting - New 2019 Target/Nahshon Hyland (Top 50 Talent)

Submitted by Matt EM on April 15th, 2019 at 10:48 PM

Had a chance to watch this kid play last weekend at Under Armour Session I, and I was absolutely blown away that he wasn't on any of the mainstream top 100 lists. He's a top 50 talent without doubt (I'd probably have him 40ish for my 2019 rankings), this would be about as good as it gets for a late add. Kid is a no-brainer, high-major talent, that may very well have some NBA potential down the road. In addition to that, its a feel good story........can't help but to pull for a kid like this wherever he ends up.

Beilein has preferred to recruit a PG every two classes. He's also shown a willingness to adapt.

He added Spike late when it looked like Burke was going to leave a year early. So he did take a PG 3 years in a row before.

He missed on his PG targets in the 2015 class which led to problems early in the 2017-18 season. I doubt he wants to be in that position again. He seemed to back on that track with Simpson, DDJ in 2018 and Jackson in 2020.

Eli Brooks is a combo guard who's better suited to play the 2. That was the view during his recruitment too.  I guess Hyland could be recruited as a combo guard who's more suited to play the 1. I think that could also apply to DDJ and Jackson.

It would be an interesting development. Shows that there aren't many good options for a SG who can step right into a big role. Personally, I think PG and C are two positions we should over recruit.

I don't think there's any doubt that Hyland can play combo/shooting guard based on what I viewed live in Chicago. Having seen Zeb live during the HS season and again in Chicago, I think shooting may be the weakest part of his game as I've already outlined in detail with video on the board a few months back. Don't think he's a terrible shooter by any means, but certainly not a traditional SG.

That is quite a story about Hyland.  He seems like a great kid, very mature outlook after what he's been through.  And Lord knows we could use his talents, the question being if he'd be patient enough to gradually work his way into getting minutes.  Coach Beilein rarely puts a true freshman into the starting lineup right off the bat (Iggy being an exception), but if he's a top 50 player and can quickly acclimate to Coach B's system----and is willing to play defense----he'll get minutes.

Now just got to get him on campus for a visit.  Soon.

I don't think Beilein cares about what class a kid is in, so long as he can hold up his part on the court without being a liability.  We don't see a lot of freshmen playing (especially early in the season) simply because they aren't ready to, for whatever reason - don't know the O & D systems well enough, aren't physically strong enough, lack confidence, etc...  They have to earn their way onto the court; the players that do, get to play.

Beilein rarely puts a true freshman into the starting lineup right off the bat (Iggy being an exception)

Also an exception:

  • Manny Harris started immediately
  • Stu Douglas started immediately
  • Zack Novak's first start was the 12th game of the year
  • Darrius Morris started immediately
  • Evan Smotrycz started immediately
  • Tim Hardaway, Jr. started immediately
  • Trey Burke's first start was the 3rd game of the year
  • GRIII started immediately
  • Nik Stauskas's first start was the 7th game of the year
  • Derrick Walton started immediately
  • Kam Chatman started immediately
  • Ricky Doyle's first start was the 11th game of the year
  • Eli Brook's first start was the 5th game of the year

Bones can ball. He also looks like he is in the middle of puberty. His quickness, handles, smooth stroke with quick release, and frame are reminiscent of Caris Levert - but a few crucial inches shorter. These late bloomers have always been appealing to Coach Beilein. ? ?

I support this young man if for no other reason that I believe we as a society need more nicknames.

Plays a lot like Manny Harris to me.

What is interesting about that list is he is the only one who moved up on the entire top 247.  Updated just for him, no one else.

One last note - if Michigan did land him, they would have the 3rd highest rated class with 3 or less recruits behind only Duke and Texas.

Can't really provide an objective evaluation on Franz since I haven't viewed him live. From the brief film I've seen, he appears to be a limited athlete with some awkward movements. The scouting reports all praise his shooting. A very uneducated guess is that he's a long term project that would compliment the current roster, but isn't ready to play for a year or two. A lot like his brother

When you say target do you mean that Michigan is considering him or only that you think that they should? If they are, let us know what you know, if anything, about where things stand.

I like his game a lot.  Reminds me a lot of Jamal Crawford.  Would be fun to watch with him and Zeb in the backcourt.  Scoring won't be a problem.

At this point, assume the 3 other players are gone since there is no indication otherwise. We exhausted and get another year in the program would enable their NBA longevity.

Having the next wave to replace, makes sense. This next group could be even more talented. In Beilein we trust. He wins and got in NC game twice.

Thanks as always for posting this stuff, Matt!

Based on your review, these highlights, and my many years as the offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers, I'd take this guy in a heartbeat.

Oh man this would be a great addition. Looks like a player who could come in and contribute right away with his offense.

If I could say one thing to young Nashon it would clearly be..

Seems like we are in the 2-3  top schools recruiting him right now. Any idea if he plans to visit? Or if any other schools like Kansas, who seems like they are having some issues recruiting due to the FBI investigation, could put up a fight?

Nahshon told me that all the schools currently showing interest/offered are in contact with him on an equal basis as of right now. I suspect that things will really heat up for him after the first live evaluation period...........likely to go full blow up mode with offers.

Now this is a kid with PG skills. Period. Call him a combo if you wish but if he plays the 2 he is a PG playing the 2. Nice skill set.

Per usual, the tapes feature the offensive skill-set. Matt, how is he defensively? My guess is that he is/will be more than "adequate".
