B1G isn't as incompetent as we thought?

Submitted by mgowild on

It sounds like the B1G let Michigan choose when they wanted to play, and Michigan chose noon (12:20). Also, it looks like MSU and PSU would've swapped game times if Michigan wanted to.

Sorry to rain on the "Bash Delany and the B1G" parade, but it seems like they were pretty accomodating.

The Big Ten said they left the game time decision today up to Michigan. They were willing to move it, but the Wolverines wanted to play as soon as they got to DC. They asked for just an extra 20 minutes to 12:20 p.m. ET. Big Ten officials told ESPN that Illinois, Michigan State and Penn State (which play in the 2 p.m game) were all very agreeable and would have done anything to help out. Michigan officials said all of the equipment is in the cargo of the plane and cannot be retrieved until the safety investigation is complete (re: wearing practice uniforms

but i'll post it here, FYI.

should we have a 'hug a delaney today posbang' thread or something....?

Anyone screaming about Warde, Delaney and the Big Ten earlier want to come clean and admit they were totally freaking out about something they knew nothing about? Mgrowold? WD?

Doesnt change how I feel about Manual.  It only changes how I feel about Delaney and that he isnt completely incompetent.  Was watching game - not board.

I still think our AD is a gutless coward.   Do you guys honestly think today is the only reason I thought that?

Cause as I posted in a different thread my issues with Manual didnt start today.  Tell me which one of the things below arent factually accurate:

1. We had no home football night game in 2016 because of Manual

2. We have an aging hockey coach who would've like to retire last year because of Manual

3. Manul did not support Harbaugh when he went off on the OSU officials and in fact, supported the B1G's official position that the matter was closed.

4. Manual made no public effort to sway sentiment in our favor for a Rose Bowl berth over the team we beat 49-10.

Those are the things I didnt like about the guy before today.  Not that I think you care that much but if you were to look you'd see I posted my complaints about him on each of those issues at the time.  And none of us know if he had anything to do with the B1G's decision to give us control over gametime although it's clear in this thread he's going to get credit for it.

First, it's Manuel. If you're gonna shit talk the guy, at least get his name right.

Second, the noon game is entirely a personal choice, and while there's many people here who would have wanted a night game, there's many people who don't want night games. Either way, it's hardly a "gutless cowardly decision"

Third, like others have repeatedly said, it's not crazy that a brand new AD, three months on the job asked a Hall of Fame coach coming off a 1st place conference finish, and Elite Eight finish to come back for another year of hockey. Also, that's hardly "gutless or cowardly"

Fourth, how do you know what was said between Manuel and the B1G regarding OSU? How do you know he didn't have his back? Because he didn't say anything publicly? How many athletic directors ever come out swinging against referees the conference chooses? I'll answer for you, not that fucking many

Fifth, you're right. Warde made no attempt to sway Rose Bowl officials to pick a team that finished 7-2 in conference and third in the division over an 8-1 conference team that was the Big Ten Champion. Man, what a giant "gutless cowardly" asshole....

Sixth, if you're going to assign him blame for everything single "slight" against Michigan, then you could at least be consistent and praise him for the "benefits" too (like our possible game time renegotiation)

1. We have exactly as many home night games as Jim Harbaugh wants.

2. I really don't understand the people griping about Red staying on another year from people who aren't die-hard Michigan hockey fans. Guys like Alton, who has been attending Michigan Hockey since the dark days of the mid-80s, hasn't griped about Warde's handling of the hockey team. Longtime fan Brian hasn't. And while I declared the second home MSU loss the low point of the Berenson era, I haven't either. I don't think Warde deserves "blame" for this. The decision for Red to stay on happened before Compher and Motte decided to leave, following a very good season, and while it would have been better for Red to retire then, one extra year isn't the end of the world.

Most of the people who object appear to be less passionate fans of the hockey program who are using this as an excuse to bash Manuel, in my opinion.

3. It's not clear what was said about officiating behind closed doors. It's possible that Manuel hamstrung Harbaugh; it's also possible that they hammered the B1G in private and were polite in public, a very common political posture that allows others to save face and preserves a working relationship.

4. The B1G champion belongs in the Rose Bowl and campaigning to alter that arrangement would have been pitiful. Lobbying like that in general isn't really an AD's job, and in that particular case I don't think Manuel had any real business sticking his foot in it.

I will grant that someone can disagree with me about these issues (#3 in particular is something which I have a belief but that I have little information to base disagreement upon) but people are drawing pretty intense conclusions ("gutless coward" is pretty cruel and unecessary language) based on pieces of evidence that are only small parts of the job of an Athletic Director.

1. Is this a joke? He is a coward and gutless for not scheduling a night game?

2. Right thing to do.  He had just arrived on campus and no time to make a rash decision.  He will hire a coach that will win and that he can work with going forward.

3. Wrong.  I know for a fact that behind the scene he was very supportive of Jim.  He confronted BIG officials about the game.

4. PSU won the BIG. Is he supposed to make a fool of himself and ask to have the rules changed? Any chance that would have changed the outcome?

I'm comfortable agreeing to disagree with you. But here's why I think differently.

iirc, Brandon burned bridges and created enemies by coming in and trying to force his way. For Manual to take a year to settle in, to figure out the lay of the land, to work with coaches at Michigan and throughout the Big 10, just seems wise. Establish strong working relationships first.

Now, as time goes on, I expect Manual to be more proactive, both with Delaney, other schools, and at Michigan. However, I don't think the first year was the best time and place to make that splash. You disagree. Well, ok.

As regards the Big 10 Tourney, it obviously seems that Manual wasn't the reason Michigan played when they did. Now they have at least 2 - 3 hours more to rest, to practice, to recuperate, to let life get back to normal. Think their playing time was a wise decision. imhe.

Well said. The Manuel-bashing drives me insane. Do people not work in highly-politicized environments where you need to pick and choose your battles? If Manuel publicly complains about every issue he'll quickly lose credibility and influence.

No way I want Manuel burning political capital on crappy refs in his first year as AD.  That was a losing fight regarding the outcome of the game, and sometimes you need to address issues without publicly flaunting gains. Yes, it sucked, but what outcome was he going to get out of lighting the Big Ten on fire?

It seems that people want him to die on every hill they come to. I'd rather have him gain respect and influence and pick his battles for when we need them. A time will come where we will.

gutless and coward?  Please share with us your specific information. I had chance to work with him when he was at UConn. He is calm and reasonable, and a good listeners, but stands his ground to support coaches and players.  You are nothing but a gutless troll.

where in any of that does it say they would have flopped the games?

I'm not seeing that in anything here. Were they just willing to postpone our game by a bit, but not willing to flop games? Just saying, none of the quotes so far say that.

I'll accept the L if all options were on the table, but the lawyer in me can't help but notice I haven't read *what* precisely they were willing to do or not.

When you tell your girl "I'll do anything for you," does it really encompass anything, lol?

anyway, Delany's story now is that he wasn't willing to move the game last night, but today, after we'd already gotten up at 4 in the morning, already were on the plane - then he started talking accomodations.

People can take it how they want to, but he didn't offer us the flexibility when we needed it.

We damn well should have opposed any further delay once we were up and into our preparations.

But I'll bet we would have liked the flexibility the night before. Wasn't offered.

This came out during the game so I was focused on the game, but yeah I apologize about Warde.

Jumped the gun. I'm extreme. Was too hands-off with DB and too microscopic with Warde. Gotta find the balance.

I just want what's best for Michigan Athletics. I'll own it.

Delany still sucks regardless, though.

That's weird because a bunch of people on the board seemed to think that Warde was nothing but a fat lazy ass who didn't want to vouch for his team, but rather just sit around eating Cheetos.
