Athletic article ($$) on JJ from a Chicago Bears scouting perspective

First of all, eff the Athletic.

I canceled my subscription following their breathless and completely one-sided reporting on the "GREATEST SCANDAL IN CFB HISTORY" but the check has cleared and I have access until they deactivate my login.

The gist of the article is a scouting look at JJ from the Bears' perspective - how does he compare to Williams/Maye and would he be a package deal with Harbaugh if coach leaves UM?  As a Bears fan, I can tell you that Harbaugh remains a (pipe?) dream candidate for a lot of folks in Chicago, so consume this article with that caveat.

I hope Ari Wasserman, Stewie Mandel and Bruce Feldman aren't upset with me for posting a few blocks of content from behind the paywall.  To show my contrition, here's the link to the full article which you could read, I guess:

An excerpt:

I saw McCarthy play in high school. Notre Dame, my alma mater, hosted Nazareth and McCarthy in Week 8 of the 2019 season. They were two of the best teams in Illinois at the time. Nazareth was No. 3 and Notre Dame No. 8 in the Chicago Sun-Times’ top 25.

It was McCarthy’s junior season. Before it began, he had committed to Harbaugh and Michigan. He and the Roadrunners, one of the best teams annually in Illinois, won the 7A state championship a season earlier with McCarthy starting as a sophomore.

It was a close game against Notre Dame, a defensive battle. Nazareth led by a touchdown at halftime and its one score was pick-six by its defense in the first quarter.

I watched the game from the end zone. I remember thinking something along the lines of, “OK, this is the kid going to Michigan? What’s so special about him?”

And then you saw it.

In the second half, McCarthy ripped a laser down the right sideline for a long gain. It went for 40 or 50 yards. It changed the game. The velocity and arc of McCarthy’s throw stood out initially, but he also hit his receiver in stride. It was different. It was D-I.

At least, that’s how I remember the throw and that moment.

Nazareth defeated Notre Dame 21-0 that night. Nazareth scored a late touchdown for the final margin. Nazareth made another run at a state title with McCarthy, eventually losing to Mount Carmel — another state power from Chicago’s South Side — in the 7A championship game. It was Nazareth’s only loss that season.

The 2020 high school season in Illinois was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. McCarthy wanted to play and left for national powerhouse IMG Academy in Florida. The wins kept coming for him. The losses never did. IMG went 8-0 and finished No. 1 in USA Today’s national rankings. McCarthy was named the 2020 MaxPreps Florida Player of the Year.

Nazareth, though, never left McCarthy’s Michigan bio. The story about his relationship with UNLV defensive lineman Ryan Keeler, a teammate and close friend at Nazareth who died in February from a heart arrhythmia, has endured throughout this season.

And another:

When you ask evaluators about the top quarterbacks for the upcoming draft, they rave about Williams and Maye’s physical gifts.

It’s their arms, legs, creativity and more.

With McCarthy, the praise is different. It always starts with his intangibles. It’s everything that Harbaugh said after Michigan beat Iowa. There is something to him. He’s widely considered a great teammate. They love him.

“He’s a winner,” a scout said.

Others said the same thing about him.

The Wolverines are 25-1 with McCarthy as their starter. He just wins. McCarthy was like that in high school, too. He went 36-2. His college record will improve his stock with many teams. He’s the first Michigan quarterback to beat Ohio State in back-to-back seasons since 1990-91.

His team-first demeanor, energy, moxie and presence deserve to be highlighted. McCarthy was the first one to congratulate Michigan’s field goal unit when it came off the field every time against Iowa. He seemingly hugged everyone at the end of the game.

And one more:

“Good but not elite traits across the board,” a scout said. “He’s athletic and can make all the throws. He has made some bad decisions this year, which we didn’t see much last year. But he plays in a pro-style offense, which NFL offensive coordinators and QB coaches will love. He can call a huddle and spit out plays.

“He might not have the upside of Williams or Maye, but he probably has a higher floor. It wouldn’t be a complete shock if he ends up being the best of the bunch.”

Again, with all quarterbacks, some projection is needed. With McCarthy, you can argue that more is needed than Williams, Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. McCarthy has played in enough games. But has he thrown enough passes to evaluate him?

Williams has 1,099 attempts in his three-year career at Oklahoma and USC. Daniels totaled 1,432 playing at Arizona State and LSU. Maye has 952 at North Carolina. McCarthy has only 668 pass attempts over his three seasons at Michigan. He threw eight passes in Michigan’s victory against Penn State on Nov. 11.

Harbaugh has described him as the best quarterback in Michigan history and he has compared him to Andrew Luck, whom Harbaugh coached at Stanford. But Luck threw 1,064 passes over three seasons in college.

This feels like nitpicking, though. Williams is likely first in the draft class; Maye is second. But McCarthy remains in the first-round mix if he declares for the draft. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler had him as a first-rounder and the fourth quarterback selected in his first mock draft.

Also as a Bears fan, I was petrified earlier in the year when JJ started showing up in the back of the top 10 in mock drafts and Love was teetering towards failure.  I saw him mocked to the Packers a couple of times.  I honestly am not sure I could handle the Packers drafting JJ and him being the face of their franchise for the next 15 years.

Unfortunately the reality might even be worse as Love has turned it around and looks legit.  Hoping its not 15 more years of domination by the Packers.

Fields can't carry Hurts' jock. Seriously you must be smoking something.

Right now Fields is emotionally damaged. His final drive heroics got a big W against divisional opponent Minny last week and in post-game it looked like he needed to call a suicide hotline.

Yes that was a tasteless line but he really looked in a bad way.

About right.

I could see the Lions taking him. With financial decisions coming up on  St. Brown, Sewell, Jackson, and Goff I can see them taking JJ letting him sit a year and then compete with Hooker.

Goff’s limitations and the need to re-sign bedrock players like St. Brown and Sewell plus a QB on a rookie first round deal make this appealing.

JJ needs to let the staff know ASAP. What they have now behind him is less than ideal.

I had a weird feeling watching Stroud play for the Texans vs the Broncos. With Payton in Denver & their tough defense, I could see JJ getting drafted by them. And it would be a great landing spot as the second coming of Elway.

As a Chiefs fan, it pains me to write that - but it's got to be one of the best landing spots for him next year.

"He has made some bad decisions this year, which we didn’t see much last year." I know I don't get paid to evaluate people, but has he really put more balls in trouble this year than last? Feels unlikely to me.

I think he has, actually, He's started trying to force balls into vanishingly small windows. When that works, like the TD to Roman Wilson against OSU, we all talk about how amazing he is, but it often doesn't work, like against Maryland. (Can we doubt that if, somehow, that pass against Maryland had gotten through to the receiver in the endzone, we would have heard about how McCarthy knew the defender would turn his back?).

His talent is undoubtedly exceptional. It's so good, in fact, that he's often convinced he can make passes — that throw across his body to Cornelius Johnson in the OSU game is another example — that could easily get him in trouble. (See also his failure to throw the ball away against Iowa, leading to several sacks that could have been avoided).

I love the guy, and it's so fun to have someone who can literally make any pass necessary. But ... yeah, a little coaching might still be helpful. :-)

Agreed.  Harbaugh values so much - and the team’s culture reflects it.

Harbaugh would work for a fraction of his salary if a revenue sharing agreement with student athletes was viable.

And, his extension with Michigan will be worth more per season than the Bears would ever offer.

I think it has to do with how much less you're responsible for in the NFL versus college.

In the NFL, the head coach only has to create a gameplan and coach it to his team.  In college, you have do that, but also recruit (which is basically a full time job) and be a figurehead for the school and be a CEO who manages the team's academics, off field schedules, disciplinary issues, hiring/firing of staff, lobby for team resources/facilities, voting in polls, etc. etc.

I cancelled my subscription, as well.  All U-M fans should boycott this gossip site.

This piece, from the "Bears perspective" is crap.  the Athletic makes up its unnamed sources, and is the journalistic equivalent of a tourist trap.

Feldman and Auerbach are right down there with Thamel as panderers.   Ashamed Auerbach is one of our own.  shows even a good education cant prevent the lure of media whore-som.

JJ - when he was in high school, in Illinois, also played against my children’s high school - and he / Nazareth - destroyed them.

I wish JJ nothing but success.  However, I really hope his future isn’t destined to be part of the Bears organization.  He deserves much more / better than that.

I think his future is performance based by whatever happens next against Alabama.

After watching Bryce Young struggle every Sunday with the Panthers as the No. 1 pick, I wouldn't want JJ to face the pressure of producing immediately as a franchise quarterback. Certainly if he enters the draft in May he likely would go late first round or later likely not having to immediately prove himself other than as a suitable backup working his way into a starting role.

As a Michigan fan, I hope he might want to come back for another year. But if he leads his team to victory in the next two games, then there is no reason to stick around.

I get a little tired of the lack of attempts discussion with McCarthy compared to Williams and Maye.  Do coaches honestly think some QB learns how to throw a better ball or read defenses better facing an extra couple hundred more pass rushes over 3 seasons?  If so then Bo Nix and Sam Hartman should be the greatest QBs of all time.

Nope. They are wrong. JJ isn’t ready. He needs another year. He really needs to work on his… uh… mediation depth, and his… crown pantomiming.

Hear that JJ?!  You need to come back for another year!

Point of order: Though he did not start the 1996 game, Brian Griese should rightfully be considered the winning quarterback in the 1995, 1996, and 1997 games, since Michigan scored all 13 of its points on the second half of the 1996 game after he came off the bench.

I want JJ to say for two reasons, as an also Bears fan:

1) Justin Fields has shown enough to give him a chance with a continually improving roster—especially a new center in 2024, god hopes.

2) JJ stays, leads UM to at least one NC, and leaves as the unquestionable #1 QB. If the Bears suck, they’ll have him there.

Just as JJ continues to grow at the college level, Justin has grown a lot with an awful OC and interior line. JJ won’t be ready in year 1 to do what Stroud has done in Houston—that’s an anomaly bolstered by Houston’s investment in the o-line prior to drafting CJ.

Yet, I’d rather have JJ than Maye or Williams. I’d take MHJ #1 and trade down the second first rounder to add picks, take JJ—but make sure there’s a new OC.

Harbaugh ain't going to Chicago. But if he did, JJ would be his pick at #4 I'm certain of it. I don't think that Coach has ever loved a player more than JJ. Seriously. Harbaugh has changed over the last few years (Beating OSU will do that). JJ's love and spirituality and positivity I think has made Harbaugh an old, warm man. Now he's quirky but full of love.

Of course, if Harbugh doesn't go to the Bears (he won't), for this same reason there is a legit chance JJ comes back. They both know they're made for each other
