Are you missing sports right now?

Submitted by ralphgoblue on March 28th, 2020 at 1:31 PM

Its kinda hard to say if im missing sports right now,its the slow season and ive never been a fan of the NBA and the NHL is all about the playoffs .Usually this time of year im all about the NFL draft and the waiting for MLB season to start ,

Being stuck at home i wouldve thought i would be going nutz if i didnt have sports, but it hasnt been that bad at all

Maybe it will hit me and ill miss my sports if they do cancel MLB,and college/NFL football.Which both seem very likely as of now

You see no irony in logging into a sports blog to comment that you don’t miss sports?    Please take that in the spirit it was meant.    The fact that we are here, actively participating in a conversation about sports, on a sports blog, suggests we all miss it a liitle.

Ironic for sure. But I’m a bit of unique situation though I’m sure there are many on here that are like me.   I only follow Michigan and I don’t really follow pro sports. This and xkcd are literally the only sites I visit daily so I get almost all of my news from here. Most of my time is spent on individual activities like reading, cycling, baking and golf. Only one of which I can’t do now. In the past I’d have sports on in the background while doing these things. Now I listen to music.

I'm a golf course Superintendent in Oakland County and I wish the public (even  though mine is a private club) would stay the hell off of golf courses! I'm not too thrilled about my staff having to come in and take care of the property, just because people are getting restless.

No offense.

Surprisingly, not really. Turns out that a primary driver in enjoying sports comes from the social angle. Now that I can’t go to a bar and watch football or baseball, it doesn’t really matter to me. My views on the world have really changed through this, curious to see if I bounce right back once this is over.

I miss March Madness.  Losing baseball wouldn't impact me much, but that's just me.  But if college football gets canceled, that would really friggin' blow.  And then if college basketball gets canceled as well then that would blow as well because I was really looking forward to seeing next season's Michigan squad play.

Need a vaccine, stat.

Imagine MSU trying to build a program right now with an unproven coach.

He and his staff have almost zero existing relationships with recruits and coaches in relation to the MSU program.  They are not allowed to visit the kids, meet their parents or host them.

You have a program in disarray surrounded by negativity.  They don’t get the opportunity to evaluate their players and implement their system in Spring ball and try and build some momentum.

Talk about an uphill battle.

Well I got a fun one for you.

TVIX

I am not advocating buying or shorting just watch for this next week. It recently went from $40 to $1000 then back to the mid $300s. From 2016 To this February I watched it drop (split adjusted) from several hundred thousands to $40. When the market isn’t stressed this is a SHORTERS dream.

Now and then I remember March Madness and miss it ... but most of the time I'm not really thinking about sports that much.  Maybe that will change as the weeks go on, I don't know.

Yes, I'm missing basketball, both college and NBA right now, but mostly March Madness. Dont care about baseball or hockey. Will be super bummed if this cancels college and NFL football next fall.

I'm really only a cfb fan, unless we're having a good year in bb, so there hasn't been much to miss yet.

But I have no idea wtf I'm going to do on Saturday's this fall, since I'm fairly certain there isn't going to be a football season.

I just don’t see how you can get on with a season when there is zero hope for a vaccine before 12-18 months from now. Who is going to want to cram into a stadium with 80,000-100,000 strangers who could infect you and everyone around you?

Even if you ban fans from the stands, you’re still bringing hundreds of players and staff into contact with each other when their immune system has no protection from this shit. All it takes is one guy who carries this virus to infect everyone else, and then when they leave the stadium, they infect everyone they come into contact with.

I’d also be seriously concerned about next year’s college basketball season. Especially if the virus comes back even harder in the Fall/Winter like some think it might.

Who would have suggested all sports would ever be cancelled even just three months ago right?  It’s probably a stretch.

A key might be a nationwide testing effort to determine those that have been not tested but have had Covid and recovered.  If you can hit a certain percentage of immunity in the population you get a controlled curve with those being high risk staying as isolated as possible.

Let’s hope we see new cases per day significantly decrease in the coming weeks.  It’s certainly not an easy answer. We do need to go back to work at some stage.

12-18 months for a vaccine is a made up number .they could find a cure today, most cures are found by accident. They might even have a cure right now .They are guessing at a date,(with zero proof they will have an answer) which is incredibly stupid, what happens in 18 months if the didnt find a cure? people will lose their minds, more then they already are.

people that are listening to this 12-18 month time table, are the people our govt prey upon everyday...plz tell me you arent this gullible.

I was wondering if Michigan would have made the sweet 16. I think when their game is on they could compete with any team in the country. But most of the time they miss easy shots and play sloppy D. So they may have won the first tournament game but probably would have lost the 2nd game. It would have been fun to watch the tournament games.

I miss having casual, unimportant stuff to talk about. The political talk in here is garbage. One of the really nice things about sports is that it gives us a casual way to connect across otherwise difficult boundaries.

I’ve been so busy that it hasn’t really hit yet, but it will. If some of the stuff I’ve been looking forward to doing with my kids this year gets cancelled, that will be a real disappointment.

Not really.  Enjoying the simple life.

When there is a season again, not sure the current season ticket pricing can be sustained. Items in the current budget  will need some heavy srutiny and some items need to go and costs reduced.

Hell, I can't get people to attend games now.  Fans from other schools are more willing to visit and pay a decent price. Kinda why we see so much opposition colors at the big games. Our fans won't pay the real price to support the school and everything else that we pay for with our season tickets.

Not having March Madness, I’ll be honest, is downright awful. I look forward to it all year, and then having it taken away right before it starts was soul crushing.

Will also miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs. While I favor March Madness, no postseason is more thrilling and as much of an adrenaline rush as the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Don’t care much for NBA, MLB, Tennis or Golf so those going away don’t bother me. If we lose college football and the NFL, then I may actually start getting depressed.

What I think we all have to remember in all of this isn’t just that sports are going away. All new editions of our shows are completely suspended, because no one can get together for filming and production. So releases for new TV seasons are all going to be delayed severely as well. Depending on how long this lasts, some shows may be altogether cancelled.

YES.

March Madness is by far my favorite annual sports event.  This year would’ve been wide open.  So many solid seniors...Zavier, Cash, Pritchard, Myles Powell to name a few.  I miss it immensely.

I also miss pga tour final rounds Sundays.

I miss seeing how far Michigan b-ball would make it in the tournament. If hockey could have beaten OSU and get into the tournament, that would have been an amaizing turnaround, considering how bad they were playing the first half of the season.

Red Wings & Pistons haven't been good recently, so nothing to miss there.

I think I might miss playing sports more than watching them. Both of my spring basketball leagues were cancelled and I was really looking forward to working on my golf game and softball season starting up in the next couple of months. I also recently took up running and had a couple of races that I was signed up for get cancelled which takes most of the fun of training away when you're trying for a specific time or place in the race. I'm not much of a video game person and I only have so many puzzles at my disposal. Maybe I'll fully immerse myself into College Football Risk.
